Sing Your Heart Out
Chapter 1: Sing a Song of Sadness
“I-I don’t think I can do this Faith, I don’t think I should even be out in public. I mean a girl needs time to recover from such a hit to the emotions. And besides, it’s been like one or two days, I hardly call that time to mourn over ones loss,” Willow rambled, here eyes never once leaving the building that lay in front of the two girls. It wasn’t so much the building that had the red head nervous, no, Willow got over her fear of extremely out of place buildings a while ago, it was the banner that hung neatly above the double doors that marked the entrance. Looking at it again, Willow couldn’t help but shudder.
“Will, it’s been nine days, nine whole days of your pent up in your room! Your never going to get over him if you don’t get out a little. There’s nothing to even worry about, it’s just a club,” Faith tried to calm the redhead as she shoved her a few steps forward.
“It’s not just a club, Faith! It’s a school sponsored club! Meaning I’ll know some of those people from my classes. I’ll probably see all of them around campus as well. I can just imagine bumping into one of them, “Hey you’re that geeky red head from the club,” And I’ll be like “Yup, that’s me, geeky red head from the club,” And th-”
“Will, breathe,” Faith interrupted the red head’s panic attack, mocking a big intake of air before letting it out. “You’ve been acting strange since you broke up with guitarist. What was his name again? Odd?”
“His name is Oz, well it’s Daniel, but that’s besides the point,” Willow couldn’t help but let out a small giggle at her best friend’s attempt at cheering her up. Oz was indeed her boyfriend for over two and a half years. They had started dating her junior year in high school and the couple really seemed to had hit it off. Willow could have sworn he was the one. That is until she walked in on him in bed with another woman, the singer of a local band, Willow believed her named to be Veruca. The whole incident left the red head crushed and she immediately called it off with Oz. Although her and Oz attended the same college they hadn’t seen or talked to each other since, not only cause Willow had mostly kept to her room besides class but they hung out with separate crowds.
Willow’s eyes widened at the realization of who might be through those double doors and she took a step backwards. “I-I can’t do it,” Willow raised her hands up in surrender. “I can’t… he might be in there,” she abruptly turned and began to walk away when Faith’s hand reached out and grabbed her wrist.
“Willow, look at me,” Faith demanded in a serious tone.
Willow sighed, she knew Faith was serious this time for Faith rarely called her by her full name. She turned to face Faith knowing full well she couldn’t win this battle.
Faith eyed the nervous red head, “Who’s your best friend?”
“You are…” Willow answered monotonously, almost as if they had been through this a million times, which of course they had.
“And how long have we known each other?”
“Since kindergarten…”
“And who, after all these years, has been right when it comes to matters of the heart?”
Willow rolled her eyes, “You…” She mumbled out. “But I cant help to think that THAT!” she pointed at the banner she had been eyeing since she stepped up to the building that night. “is the reason why you brought me here on this particular night!”
Faith now turned to face the banner the red head was pointing at “Hmmm… open mic karaoke night…” Faith read aloud. “I would never do something so sneaky and underhanded like that!” she tried to sound appalled. “Tonight is about hooking you up with someone and forgetting about Oz…” Faith checked the watch on her wrist. “Now come on! Your time slot is coming up,” Faith exclaimed as she pushed Willow towards the double doors.
“T-time slot?” Willow was almost to afraid to ask.
“Yeah, so many people wanted to sing tonight that you had to book it a week in advance! But don’t worry, I took care of everything for ya,”
Faith gave a dreamy sigh. “Ah Red, what would you ever do without me?”
“I wouldn’t be singing tonight, that’s for damn sure,” Willow said as she allowed her friend to lead her to what she knew would be her demise.

“Next up is Willow Rosenberg!” said the MC for the night. Willow knew him to be Alexander Harris, but he went by Xander. He was from her History of the Arts class, A real ladies man but all around nice guy.
Maybe he’ll be nice enough to not laugh to hard.
Willow’s eyes went wide, she quickly scanned the crowd. “Faith! I-I just realized, I don’t know what to sing!” she yelled to the brunette that was now standing towards the front of the crowd.
Faith thought about it for a second before yelling back to answer "just sing your heart out.”
Xander lead Willow over to the karaoke machine to pick out a song and quickly showing her how it worked as well.
“It’s ok Willow,” Xander said as he noticed the red head’s nervous state. “I’m sure whatever you pick and sing will be fine, your singing will be a hit, and by the time the night’s over you’ll have the phone numbers of at least five lucky guys. Your singing will make all the guys fall for ya,” he gave her a quick wink and a smile before he headed off the stage.
“Or laugh hysterically,” Willow retorted to no one at all.
Ok, focus Rosenberg, which song should you choose? She scanned the selection of music, which, to her surprise, wasn’t as limited as she thought it would be. Once she knew she picked what she thought to be a good song, she walked to the center of the stage and picked up the mic from the stand. She look out upon the audience,
Goddess, it feels like the whole school is here tonight.
Willow closed her eyes and took a deep breath as the music began to pick up to a nice beat that she knew all to well. The guitar solo was nice, but she knew it wouldn’t last and she would eventually have to start singing.
Well, here goes nothing, she took a deep breath.

Can you see me
Floating above your head?
As you lay in bed
Thinking about everything
That you did not do
Cause saying “I love you”
Has nothing to do with meaning it
And I don’t trust you
Cause every time your near
Your intentions are unclear
I spend every hour waiting
For a phone call
That I know will never come
I use to think you were the one
Now I’m sick of thinking anything”
Willow took a deep breath before continuing.

“And you ain’t ever coming back to me
That’s not how things were suppose to be
You took my hand just to give it back
No other lover has ever done that.”
As she sung the last lines of the song's chorus she took her first look out among the crowds faces. The sight that greeted her was not of everyone booing but the looks that they had on their faces told her that they were enjoying it. She smiled as the next verse of the song was about to begin.
“And do you remember
The way we use to melt?
Do you remember how it felt when I touched you? Oh
Cause I remember very well.
And how long has it been
Since someone you let in
Has given what I gave to you
And at night when you sleep
Do you dream that id be there?
Just for a minute, oh I do, do you?
You ain’t ever coming back to me
that’s not how things were suppose to be
You took my hand just to give it back
No other lover has ever done that
Heartache, heartache I just have so much
A simple love with a complex touch
And there is nothing you can say or do
I called to let you know I’m through with you”
Willow almost laughed at the trueness of the songs words. This song was her way of letting herself know she was through with Oz. She couldn’t help but let out a silent tear at that realization and she hoped to god no one noticed.
“And you ain’t ever coming back to me
that’s not how things were suppose to be
You took my hand just to give it back
No other lover has ever done that
Heartache, heartache I just have so much
A simple love with a complex touch
And there is nothing you can say or do
I called to let you know I’m through
I called to let you know I’m through
I called to let you know I’m through with you.
And I ain’t ever coming back to you.”
The crowd erupted into a roaring applause as the music died down. Faith bounded through the crowd and leaped onto the stage to give the speechless red head a congratulatory hug.
“Ya hear that Will? All that clapping is for you! I believe that you rocked this house,” Faith shouted over the applause.
“Doesn’t change the fact that I still feel like shit,” Willow said, the sadness evident in her voice.
“What’s that?” Faith said ignoring the redhead and holding her ear towards the crowd. “I think they want a encore!”
Willow’s eyes widened. “What? No way… I’m done,” She put the mic to her mouth. “Sorry folks, but I’m uh, all sung out.” She put the mic back on it’s stand and was surprised to hear the crowds disappointment at her decision to exit stage left.
Willow hopped down off of the stage with an equally disappointed Faith trailing behind her.
“All right Will, what’s your problem now?” Faith asked as they sat down on a couch towards the back of the club.
Willow sighed for what seemed like the millionth time that night. “It’s just that, that song reminded me once again that Oz is no longer mine… No matter how much I want him to be.”
“Aw hun, it’s fine. Let’s just listen to the other people sing and relax. Or you could scope out the hotties, there’s gotta be someone here tonight that gets you hot you know where,” Faith said with a smirk as her own eyes scanned the crowd.
Faith’s attention was brought back to the stage as Xander made his appearance and grabbed hold of the mic. “I know, we all wanted Willow to sing us another song, but I assure you this next vocalist will have you begging for more as well. You all know her as the lead singer of the new campus band, The Wiccans, I know her rather personally,” Xander chuckled to himself, a mischievous glint in his eyes. As if on cue a black sneaker flew from off the stage and smacked Xander squarely in the head. “Ow… Uhm…. Just kidding,” he massaged the back of his scalp. “Ladies and gentleman, put your hands together for ms. Tara Maclay!” Xander said, clapping his hands and backing his way off stage.
A blonde head peaked its way onto the stage eyeing the crowd. Almost suddenly a body darted out from behind the curtains to takes it’s place at the mic, or more like the body hopped out, being shoeless on her right foot.
She cleared her throat as she quickly put her shoe back on and grabbed hold of the mic. “Hey everyone,” the blonde smiled a sideways grin. “Willow Rosenberg, eh? That’s gonna be a tough act to follow,” the blonde hoped that at the mention f the red head’s name she would have looked up, but she didn’t. Tara frowned, she probably didn’t even notice. “Well in sticking with the mood of the last song, and seeing as I’m in the same boat as the lovely little red head. I’ll sing a song about dealing with an ex… Although, unlike Ms. Rosenberg, I’d deal a little more differently.”
The music began and Tara felt it flow through her as she began tapping out the beat with her foot.
“She clings to me like cellophane
Fake plastic submarine
Slowly driving me insane
But now that’s over
So what if the sex was great?
Just a temporary escape
Another thing I grew to heat
But now that’s over.”
“Hey Red, this girl really knows how to handle a break up. Maybe you should get a few pointers,” Faith said trying to get the red head to look up from her drink that she had been eyeing for the past five minutes or so. “Get a load of Blondie up there. She ain’t half bad.”
Willow’s eyes finally left her drink and fell upon the stage. Her jaw dropped as her eyes rested upon the goddess that graced the club that night. Willow could feel her heart begin to race as she watched the way the woman moved as if the words compelled her, the way he mouth formed every syllable of the lyrics, which Willow couldn’t even process at this moment in time. The way her golden hair shone by the dim light of the club. Everything about the woman was so… so sensual, so...
sexy. Willow’s eyes were glued to the woman on stage and she was quite sure she even drooled a little. This, of course, didn’t go unnoticed by the brunette sitting next to her.
“Why, why you always kick me when I’m
High, knock me down ‘till we see eye to
Eye. Figure her out
I know she may not be Ms. Right
She’ll do right now
She’ll do right now
I use to hang on every word
Each line was more absurd
Kept me so insecure
But now that’s over
She taught me how to trust
And to believe in us
And then she taught me how to cuss
That bitch its over
You know I use to be such a nice girl
Why, why you always kick me when I’m
High, knock me down ‘till we see eye to
Eye. Figure her out
I know she may not be Ms. Right
She’ll do right now”

And so began the guitar solo and if Willow’s mouth could have dropped any lower, it would have as the girl on stage started to dance to the beat of the music. The blonde’s eyes were closed as her hips swayed in rhythm to the drum beats.
Goddess, does she know how hot she looks? How I’d like to feel those hips as I… Whoa Rosenberg! Get a grip, you don’t even know the girl and your already dreaming of seducing her! I cant do that until we get to at least first name basis! But Willow couldn’t help but be lost as the blonde began to sing again.
“She clings to me like cellophane
Fake plastic submarine
She’s driving me insane
But now that’s over
Now that’s over
Why, why you always kick me when I’m
High, knock me down ‘till we see eye to
Eye. Figure her out
I know she may not be Ms. Right
She’ll do right now
She’ll do right now
Right now
Oh, right now”

Another roar of applause erupted from the audience as the music came to a stop.
“Thanks you, thank you. You’re to kind,” Tara waved them off as her eyes scanned the crowd for the red head, almost as if she was seeking her approval, but she was no where to be found. Tara’s head fell in disappointment.

“Yo Red, why did we have to leave so early?” Faith asked as the two of them walked back to their dorm.
“I uhm, just didn’t want to be there anymore. I was uh… bored! That’s right, I was bored,” the red head tried to explain but it came out rather lamely.
“Are you sure it wasn’t because you were smitten?” Faith asked, a knowing smile played across her features as she stopped walking and faced the girl.
Willow’s eyes widened. “Nope! Uh… no smitten here, no sirè!” she raised her hands in defense. “Besides, there weren’t any cute guys there tonight anyway, you know that…”
Well, Willow thought,
that wasn’t a total lie.
“Come on, you and I both know that it’s not just guys you’re after, Will” Faith’s smirk grew wider if that was even possible. “I know and you know that you bat for both teams.”
“Even still…” Willow tried her hardest to defend herself.
“Not even with a certain sexy blonde on stage? Don’t think I didn’t notice. Hey, I was practically swimming in your drool!” Faith said bluntly. She didn’t even wait for the red head to answer as Willow stopped dead in her tracks and Faith trotted along triumphantly ahead of her. By the dumbfounded look on her face, she knew she had gotten it right.
“Was I really that noticeable?” She asked in a whisper, to afraid of the answer.
Willow noticed that Faith had stopped a little bit further ahead to wait for the now stunned red head, she shook it off and jogged to catch up with the brunette.
Oh this was going to be interesting…
~~
The first song sung by Willow is Maroon 5's Through With You. The second song that was sung by Tara was SR-71's Right Now both are very good songs that come with my highest recommendations, you should check them out!
