Love Rocks - HRC Fundraising CD for Gay Rights

Postby xita » Sun Jan 23, 2005 11:36 am

From Rolling Stone

Ono, Pink Spread the Love

Aguilera, Etheridge also contribute to gay rights compilation

Yoko Ono, Christina Aguilera, the Dixie Chicks, Mandy Moore, Pink, Emmylou Harris, Cyndi Lauper and Melissa Etheridge are among the thirty-two artists featured on the double-disc compilation, Love Rocks, due February 25th. Proceeds from the set go to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization dedicated to fighting for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.

One issue that galvanized the musicians involved is the ongoing constitutional battle to legally sanction same-sex marriage.

"I just think it's a human rights issue," Ono, who contributes "Every Man Has a Man" -- a Middle Eastern-seasoned remix of her 1980 song "Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him" -- tells Rolling Stone. "The constitution of this country is based on human rights and justice and freedom . . . For [politicians] to say, 'OK, we're going to change the constitution so the gays can't get married,' I think it is outrageous . . . I just immediately started to feel that it was important to send that message out that anybody can fall in love regardless of the difference of religion, or race, or sex, or age. Love is love. It's beautiful.

"My generation knows that if two people are fortunate enough to fall in love, they should be protected equally under the law," says Moore, who does a poppy reading of Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move."

Adds Pink, "I think it is so important for us, through music, art and even politics, to stand up and use our voices; to support and promote any and all acts of love and commitment between any and all types of people."

"All of us have the responsibility to visualize a better world for ourselves and our children so we'll get there," Ono continues. "In reality, the truth is what we create. It's in our hands."

Thirty-two big-name artists are featured on "Love Rocks," a collection of songs to benefit the Human Rights Campaign.

Yoko Ono, Christina Aguilera, the Dixie Chicks, Mandy Moore, Pink, Emmylou Harris, Cyndi Lauper and Melissa Etheridge are among the entertainers featured on the double-disc compilation due for release Feb. 25, Rolling Stone reports.

The organization is dedicated to fighting for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. An issue that motivated the musicians is the constitutional battle to legally sanction same-sex marriage.

One thing to note is you can only buy this if you live in the US.

Which is a pity as I was going to buy this for a friend.

Yikes, I wish I'd heard of more of the artists! (GG, Feeling Old :happy )

Still, it's a very good thing (will make a note of the artists, to support 'em down the line: yay, Dixie Chicks! :applause )

GG justin, is the deal that another version will be released abroad? Otherwise, I'm sure some American Kitten can arrange to get it for you! :kiss Out

I've got an advance copy of this for review. It's a pretty eclectic mix of artists and styles. I suspect most people will make good use of their CD-remotes "program" feature to hear their faves and skip the ones that aren't their thing.

For me, the Dixie Chicks song is a highlight, and Mandy Moore's cover of Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move" is surprisingly fun, adding turntables and other dance music f/x to the song.

And of course for an '80s guy like me, you can't go wrong with "Time After Time" or the B-52's "Summer Of Love" (even if I prefer the original to the remix here).

PS: Justin, I've actually got a spare, so if you want to get in touch with me maybe we can work something out.

Gatito Grande: What happened was when I tried to order the cds I found that you need to provide a state for the billing information and unlike most ecommerce sites there isn't an option for people living outside the US.

I don't know if there's going to be another version, or if it'll be sold by anyone else.

Ben Varkentine: Well I had been going to get it as a christmas present, so it's a bit late for that. Thanks for the offer though :)

From the Pam's House Blend blog...

Quote:
Focus on the Family goes after music artists contributing to HRC "Love Rocks" CD

Here's an opportunity to publicize the thing you're trying to kill...Focus on the Family wants to go after Mandy Moore, Yoko Ono and Dolly Parton. Does this organization have anything better to do? It looks like FoF's "Gender Issues Analyst" Melissa Fryrear's worried about homo Trojan horses (I'm not sh*tting you).

Full entry contains lengthy excerpt from a Baptist Press news item that I decided not to quote here.

Let's just say it proves yet again the truth of the phrase "These people just don't get it." Probably in more than one meaning of the words, if you catch my drift.
