It seems that Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois are blue states not just because of politics, but because that’s the color you become when you walk outside in the winter. It took me three hours to clear the 12” of snow off the paved surfaces around my house on Thursday and then last night we got another 3” to clean up. At least last night’s snow was the light, fluffy kind that doesn’t break your back when you try to shovel it, unlike Thursday’s snowfall. I did hear that it’s supposed to reach 40 degrees by Thursday though. Woo Hoo!

Nope, I didn't see that. But I do remember several years ago, some reporter saying that it was so cold in Alaska (that day) that if you spit, it would actually freeze before hitting the ground...damn!

I was looking at temps, and I came across this.

Q: What is the coldest temperature ever recorded on earth?

A: The lowest official temperature is the -129 degrees Fahrenheit that workers at the Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica measured on July 21, 1983. That's during the middle of the Southern Hemisphere's winter.

It could be worse skittles, you could be living in Embarrass, Minnesota. Where this morning, it was -54 degrees!

Brian, did you see the news about them? They had examples of how cold it was. The reporter took a banana that was left out all night and hammered a nail into a board with it. Never thought that was possible now that’s cold

Oh ya, sure! You betcha! Embarrass or International Falls are always vying for lowest temp here.

It's -4F in the Twin Cities right now, and has been below zero for the high temperature all weekend. We expect this in January and February. Live through those months and it's downhill to spring. Our spring lasts about 17 seconds at last count, quickly followed by 95F temps and clouds of mosquitos. From there, we descend gently into fall, our loveliest season. And then we reach winter once again, which lasts some 7 months (seems like it anyway).

Okay, I can't beat -129 (OMG :o -) Currently it's -20 C (-7.5 F) here in Southern Ontario, with wind chill warnings to between -33 and possibly -40 overnight. I think fahrenheit and celsus actually converge at this temp (-40). They call this front an "Alberta Clipper." Um, it's only -2 in Edmonton Alberta, they can certainly have this cold back. It's a balmy -11C in Ancorage...we are a long, long, long, looooooonnnnnng way south of Ancorage!

However, it is a beautiful night. Totally open sky. It's just a tad on the frosty side.

Stay warm northerly Kitten. Brrrrrr

Pupsicle!

Postby Willowlicious » Tue Jan 18, 2005 9:14 am

Well, it's a balmy 8 degrees F this morning in Detroit. Having lived in Michigan all my life, I'm used to this sort of thing. However, we got a new puppy 2 weeks ago and housetraining in this weather is agony (for us and the poor pup)! Nothing like walking through a snow drift with a puppy at 3 a.m. in temperatures so cold it hurts to breathe. Perhaps we should have gotten a puppy in the spring like normal people. Sigh.

Anyhow, here's a couple of pictures of our puppy. He's a chocolate brown cocker spaniel. His name is Nickleby and he'll turn 9 weeks old on Thursday. He's cute --that's what gets me through these agonizing days of January!

Willowlicious, you were lucky this morning at 8 F.... when I woke up at 6.30, it was 8 degrees BELOW zero!!! (-22C)

I don't even want to know what the windchill was.

Elsewhere in the area, it was -13F & -10F....

I'm just glad my car started.... even if I couldn't.

but that is a very cute puppy-cycle.... :grin

Oh man: I am finally trying to get back in the habit of working out (weight-lifting), and I just went out to my car to snag my leather gloves (for that purpose), prior to uncovering the weight set and beginning . . .

:yikes

. . . and ran back inside, to put on another layer! :brr

GG Even w/ another layer (and a scarf over my face), I doubt I'll last very long. Mother Nature is conspiring to keep ancient, now-43-year-old me flabby and shabby! :mad Out

Awwww: very cute, Willowlicious. (Doesn't Oprah have a brown cocker too?)

Awww Willowlicious…Nickleby is SO cute! He looks almost grown though; are you sure he’s still a puppy? I don’t envy him or you for having to go through the whole potty training routine at this time of the year. I just came back from my walk in the delightful -12 degree below zero temps and I feel like my nose must have frozen solid and fell off somewhere. And we get to look forward to another 3-6” of snow tonight too. Ain‘t winter grand?

Minneapolis and Saint Paul finally got hit with a blizzard - first of this winter season and the first 1"-or-more accumulation from a single storm this season. The blizzard late last year passed us by entirely. We got 8" inches, then blowing and drifting winds to make visibility impossible on the freeways. Ahhhhh, back to normal.

hehe I love snow. unfortunitly I go to school by the shore so we hardly get any snow. My mom got a couple of feet by my house but here we got about 6 inches. I miss snow days. But it did drop down to a nice 6 degrees here. It's been awhile since I've seen single digits.

But my roommates figured out how to get the heater to stay on in our on campus apartment (they don't let us control the temperature), all we have to do is put a bag of ice cubes on top of the thermostat and poof, insto-heat! :party

I want to throw something at the TV every time I hear one of our weather persons refer to the weather here as cold. I will admit that right now there is a pathetically thin layer of snow clinging to life as we speak, but cold? Compared to what? The Sahara at noon? I know I keep whining about the lack of snow and cold when at the same time some parts of the world, especially the US, get way too much. I hope everyone is safe and careful when going outside. I wish I could balance things out a bit.

I just checked the weather channel and right now its 5 F degrees with windchills down to -15 F. Our high temp today is supposed to be a very sweltering 8 F. Thats it, I'm wearing a bikini to work. It gives new meaning to me being Cold and Bitter.

When I checked my thermometer outside my window, I swear it said "what are you nuts, stay under the covers"

I'd rather have snow. At least then, its a little warmer. Not much but to the point where you can tell the difference.

I guess I'd better go warm up my car. Grrrrr with a side of Brrrr!!!

Have a great day everyone and be careful!!!

This is too freaky for words. Last week it was like 20 degrees Celsius in Majorca/Mallorca and now it is covered by snow! Palmtrees and snow.:wtf Here, a thousand miles to the north the pathetic layer of snow we had, has melted into nothing and it is drizzling and grey instead of sunny and white.

I feel for you skittles! Right now it's only 8:30pm and it's already down to -9. It's absolutely freezing. Looks like it should get warmer by this weekend though. We should be hitting thirty. Stay warm everyone!

The snow is teasing!!! Here in London it snows then settles, melts then snows again not letting it settle! Gah! Why! Its so cold then it snows then it won't snow again but stays cold. *pouts* my nose can't take much more of the freezingness. Must wrap up warmer....:brr

schools across my region are closed today. not because there is so much snow, but that beneath the snow is ICE!!! not very fun for school bus drivers... unless they are also world class ice skaters!!! (I'm not fully awake so the jokes are pretty lame)

Well who says bitching and whining does not help? We have had the warmest winter in like forever, I am have been lamenting the lack of snow consistently, but as of yesterday it has snowed more than in the last 50 years. Not all the snow in the last 50 years combined of course. There is about 30 to 40 centimeters of snow in my town now (I know it is peanuts compared to what some other Kittens are used to), but it is more than I had dared hope for. The view from my bedroomwindow is amazing.

I walked for hours and took pretty pictures. Of course I killed my camera at literally the last minute. I was already home when I had to take a few more pics of my backyard. The battery was low and it died so I figured no big deal, but it seems to stay dead with new batteries as well. So I need to find a card reader to get to the pics, but what the hell. I was looking for a good excuse to buy a new camera anyway. This one is a bit big, heavy and outdated with it´s 2.0 megapixels.
