Well I read all the way through this thread and there is NO way I'm resigning my self to the old lesbian thread.!!

And I'm NOT going to be the only one in the middle aged dyke thread.

Soooo... unless you throw me out and send me to the old dykes home, I guess I'm going to be popping in from time to time and adding my few pence worth.

I hope that's ok with all you... Non middle aged Lesbians:crazy

Count Duckula! I loved that show. Even though I think there were only ever about 8 episodes made. ;)

Thunder Cats?

Actually, I was pretty much obsessed with any character that had a horse. Probably should have been a sign. My Little Pony, She-Ra (wanted to be her), and Rainbow Bright were my personal favorites.

Welcome, EffieBlue. We are an accepting "other" ages group. Middle age or not you’re always welcome. Hell you could post in the old lesbian thread then come in here to pick on us and we (or maybe just me) would be ok with it. ;) just as long as you take Holley's 80's quiz, you can't possibly do any worse than I did!

And happy birthday to veiled isis moon. Hope it’s a good one.

At the mention of those little candy necklaces here is a little story about them. When I was living in the city we would have house parties and give out candy, one of the candy items was the necklace, what a little party favor that was. The party goers had and understanding that if you were wearing the necklace then anybody could come up to you and bite a candy off of it.

*sigh* memories, I was such a little hussy!

Oh man ,this tread is just too much fun.

OK,OK,I probably don't belong here, cause ,well ,I think I'm a little (cough) older than most posting here. But in my defense I will always be 25ish,only with older responsibilities.

The 80's were so many years, beers, shots, bars and cars ago.

I was into the rock and punk clubs. Long Island NY.most definitely kicked butt back then,Soft white underbelly(AKA:Blue Oyster cult)Twisted Sister,Zebra,Southern Cross,Rat Race Choir,Joan Jett,just to name a few(that I can remember).I have a hangover just thinking about it.I was(and still am)a hard core rocker,Led Zep,Pink Floyd,Bob Seger,Fleetwoodmac,Melissa Etheridg,U2,ect...along with Erasure,Roxette,ect..

Lets not get into the clothes(spandax pants,t-shirts,high heeled boots and bandannas) OK. Does(or can,) anybody remember that? I don't remember much tv from then, well except MTV of course.

Well just thought I'd jog a few memories out there.

I'll keep reading so I can see what I missed during my 80's hangover.

Just came across this on an unrelated search. What fun this thread was! It is amazing to see how many kittens have come and gone on the board, most of us have moved on with our busy lives, yet still pop in every once in a while.

LIcky, I hope you are still not down on your knees cleaning my floor of Connie's footprints!

Okay, I was just a wee sprout when this thread was started. I am 35 now. I don't know how to feel about that.

For shits and giggles, I went back and took the 80s lyrics quiz again. Got 126.5. The 80s are my LIFE! Rad!

Just today, I saw this - Most Memorable TV Ads of the ’70s. Brought back a lot of memories. I remember that I had something like a Mr. Microphone, but mine had Donny and Marie stuff all over it. (If you don't know who Donny and Marie are, you are in the wrong thread.) I also remember that when my lips touched the metal part you talk/sing into, it shocked me ever so slightly. An odd tingling sensation that wasn't really pleasant, but I felt compelled to keep doing it. I was like 5 years old, cut me some slack, Jack.

I only got 58 on the 80s lyrics quiz...damn that was a long quiz!...guess I burned through a few more brain cells in my party days than I thought...actually most of the stuff I missed was from hair bands which is something I never ever listened to...spent a lot of the early 80s in gay bars...I was all about the New Wave and Punk and then Alternative...got that Depeche Mode lyric right away...and what do they mean no one ever gets "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar"? I thought that was one of the quintessential songs of the 80s! (I graduated from HS in 82)

As for lesbian crushes back then...well, I wasn't out to myself then, but I remember thinking "I don't really like Joan Jett's music much but there's just something about her that I like"...hmmmmm...also remember crushing on "Leather Tuscadero" (Suzi Quattro) on Happy Days as a kid...telling much? Oooooo and Annie Lennox with her suit and man hair in the Sweet Dreams video...yummy! Speaking of very butch chicks, anyone else remember Wendy O Williams and the Plasmatics? Odd when I look at this...cuz I am so not into butch chicks now...tomboys yes...femmy athletic nerdy ones

Anyway, yea! on this thread...I was wondering where the Gen-Xers were...haven't you always hated that name?

And lets not forget the horridly bad gay movies of the 80s "Making Love" and the cliche fest that is "Personal Best" OY!

So what's your favorite '80s song? I still have a soft spot for Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins and of course Rock Lobster in fact I quot my first job cuz I had front row seats for the B-52s and they wouldn't give me the night off :kgeek

Oh, I remember that well. She was nuts! I was in college at Ohio State when she got arrested for doing obscene things with a microphone stand. Did I mention that she was nuts?

I suppose that I really shouldn't participate here because I was born in '61 and that officially makes me a late boomer rather than a Gen-Xer, so if anyone wants me to shut up now, I will.
and what do they mean no one ever gets "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar"?

Yes, that was indeed quintessential 80s (I graduated from HS in '78). I spent the mid-eighties working as a bartender in a gay bar, so yes, punk, new wave, and alternative were the sounds of the day. We were very into Erasure, the B-52s (of course), and the Eurythmics. It was a fun time.

ETA: Oh, my favorite song from back then is "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Just how queer am I?

..and what do they mean no one ever gets "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar"? I thought that was one of the quintessential songs of the 80s!

That much is true...

(see what I did there?)

OMG, crushes. Too many to name, and I guess I leaned toward femmier women, but Joan Jett rocked the fuck out of my world. When I heard her cover of "Crimson and Clover" I was so intrigued, I thought I was going to die. Life was hard before the internet. I suppose I was out to myself since I was about 5 years old, at least in the sense that I knew I liked girls and I didn't think there was anything strange about that ("I don't really care if you think I'm strange, I ain't gonna change!"), but I didn't think of myself as gay or bi or straight until I was a teenager, I suppose.

Wendy O Williams and her chainsaw scared me as bad as Grace Jones did. I had nightmares after seeing Grace Jones videos.

haven't you always hated that name?

I haven't, not really. Why do you hate it?

Speaking of Gen X, this site - EarlyXer.com - has some pictures of stuff we probably had around the house. Weird how many things came in jars then - deodorant, shampoo, and such. I want this floor lamp so bad!

And you can spend days at Plaid Stallions.

I better stop...

So what's your favorite '80s song?

I am not even going to try to decide that. It totally depends on my mood. Usually, whatever '80s song is playing at the moment, I proclaim, "OMG, this is the best song of all TIME!" Unless it's, you know, Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling" or some shit.

We were very into Erasure...

That reminds me! I was sooo in love with Alison Moyet! (Erasure ---> Yaz/Alison Moyet)

Oh, my favorite song from back then is "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Just how queer am I?

Queer as a three dollar bill! Queer as a football bat!

Ooooh, anyone remember the Communards? I loved them so much. Jimmy Somerville from Bronski Beat...and some other guy.

Oh my God, I am totally having an eightiesgasm!

Ah, the 80's. Good times, post punk, new romantic pretty boys, Bannarama and The Eurythmics et al.

Big hair and bigger shoulders, and that was just the guys ;-)

When I think of some of the fashion disasters I wore then I cringe. I cringe even more at my attempts to dance like Molly Ringwald did in The Breakfast Club.

I scored 68 on the 80's lyric quiz, I forgot the lyrics but could hear the tune, but it's inspired me to have a listen to my best of the 80's cd's and try that bloody dance again. I just hope the old bones are up for it :party

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, Holley, and keep posting the fun links!

I got a 77.5 on the 80s music quiz, which kinda sucks considering I was a DJ from '87-'91. At least most of the ones I missed were songs that NEVER would have gotten airplay at the college new wave station I was at. Come on...Chicago? *barf*

My parents have been going through the attic in preparation for moving, and suddenly I'm getting care packages chock-full of nostalgia. She still had my G.I. Joe! And my Big Jim with kung-fu action! And my Steve Austin complete with rocket capsule! Hmm...and not a Barbie in sight. You'd think I'd have had a clue, wouldn't you?

Favorite 80s song is so hard, but I Melt With You never gets old.

VH1 Classic was recently running top 100 songs of the 80s, and Oh. My. God. it's hard to believe that we thought the fashions were such a step up from the 70s. What's with the pseudo-uniform look? (and yes, I admit to buying into that fetish). I'm ever thankful that I never had big hair, and I faithfully ripped the shoulder pads out of all my jackets (which I wore with the sleeves rolled up, natch).

Ah the 80s, I was born in 1980 so I think I only just qualify as a Generation X-er, still, I have some great memories from the 80s. I still have my GI Joes, although they are currently hidden away in a shoebox as my girlfriend thinks they are embarassing. I do remember having something of a fashion sense as even at the tender age of 5 I used to let my mother dress me in brown coduroys for school. She should have known that my complete lack of protest was concealing the fact that I smuggled 'cooler' outfits in my bag and changed at school.

My favourite songs from the 80s are 'Locomotion' by Kylie Minogue, 'I think we're alone now' by Tiffany and anything by Wham!...so that gives you a good clue that I was just a young'un in the 80s!!!! I think I shall have to find a photo of myself sporting a page boy haircut and wearing something with polka dots.

Loved the Communards and Alison Moyet...and all you say about Wendy O Williams is true...major freakazoid...but she also starred in the 80s camp classic Reform School Girls

I was born in '64 but I totally consider myself Gen-X...no boomer would have worn their hair the way I did in the 80s! I used product that made my spikes (hair) so sharp I would occasionally cut myself on them...ah those were the days...it's really a wonder I remember any of them

I took that quiz and bombed it. Badly. The worst part is when it showed the answers I would have only missed like 3 because I knew all the rest. Terrible.

By the way, I hope its okay that I'm here, cause I hang out with all the older people anyway.

I made a 74 on the 80s quiz. On the other hand, I didn't even bother with the 90s quiz - I knew virtually nothing from it.

What constitutes Generation X anyway? I have heard different dates, but I think a good description I heard was, "If you were in school and old enough to remember when the Challenger accident happened, you are in GenX."

Well....not a lesbian (i do like girls though-I know. Doesnt count) but I am Gen Xer and I have over 400 CDs of 80's music and an undisclosed amount of MP3s.

I socred 137 on the quiz!

I am disapointed though that there was no Iron Maiden on the quiz. That a huge part of the 80's for me.
