Paint the Sky wrote: we could have George W Bush Jnr

since this a common misnomer, by americans and international peeps alike, let me clarify:

there is no "george w. bush, jr." there is a george herbert walker bush (president #41), george walker bush (current president #43) and a george prescott bush (son of former florida governor jeb bush, grandson of 41 and nephew of 43). george w. only has daughters, so alas, no george w. bush, jr.

sorry, just peeve of mine.

i'm not a massive obama fan either. i find though that my aversion to him is the same as my aversion to religion... it's the followers more than anything that repulse me. i'm just turned off by fanaticism of all forms, and i've found obama supporters to be ridiculously fanatical. i was a massive hillary supporter and was very disappointed that obama didn't tap her for VP. however, i'm not going to cut my nose to spite my face and vote against the democratic party. obama is inspiring and has some good, albeit vague, ideas about where/how to take the country in a new direction and repair the damage that's been done over the past eight years.

discussing the above with the girl i'm seeing, an obama supporter with one of his speeches as her ringtone (gag), she joked that she couldn't blame me for not being overwhelmed because i was older than his target demographic (i'm 30, she's 23). i retorted with "yes, his message seems to work best with the young and naive." even she had to admit it was a genius comeback

mccain's selection of that right-wingnut palin is probably one of the more pathetic and desperate examples of political pandering i've ever seen. i can't even get into it right now, my blood pressure skyrockets.

I am really impressed with Obama...when asked what he thought of Palin's teenaged daughter being pregnant he said "I have said it from the beginning, I don't think personal lives should be a part of this campaign" or something along those lines...I was not a huge fan from day one...I would really prefer to have Hillary be the nominee, but credit where credit is due...way to take the high road! If positions were reversed you know those Republican mudslingers would be all over that action!

I think that the election in America, as someone who can view it from the outside, is really interesting. Firsty we had the primaries. Now I [/i]was a HUGE Hillary Clinton fan. But I felt that she, and her campaign, behaved really badly. Not to mention the fact that she voted for the war in Iraq. Now we have this lunatic Palin as the Republican nominee for vice president. I think this raises really interesting issues about women in power. I am the first to express my dismay at the lack of women in power - would that France have voted in Segoline Royale they may have been in a happier place. BUT I don't think the fact that women are women should be such an issue in and of itself. I grew up in the UK in the '80's. We had a female Prime Minister, one that dessimated trades unions thus leaving huge swathes of the North and Wales in poverty, dismantled and rebuilt our education system in such a way that children are tested on how well they can pass tests and who spawned such a rampant form of individualism that UK politics was forever changed.

The thing that concerns me much more than anything else is the turn towards neo-conservatism that seems to have swept America and the UK in recent years. Who would have thought that the world would be like this 30 years on from 1968? I cannot understand why religion has such a place in politics. It is creeping in here in the UK, recently a law was passed which criminalised homophobic hate speech. However 'certain religious groups' are allowed to express homophobic opinions 'because it is in their scriptures'. This angers me beyond belief. I hope that the world-wide recession spurs people into social action - there's nothing like being poor to make you question the real value of things. Okay - sorry, I'm ranting. One last thing - I HATE the way anti-abortion groups are called 'pro-life' - the implication being that pro-abortion groups are anti-life. Christ, I need to get out more...rant over *breathes deeply* I just hope that Hilary Clinton's supporters, many of whom were activists in 1968, don't let their disappointent stand in the way of making the right decision in November.

Just realised that '68 was 40 years ago *blushes* See? I am the numerically challenged product of Thatcher's education system...

With that and the SNP in Edinburgh, Boris the Buffoon in London and the Conservatives on their way back to power in Westminster it looks like it's a return to the bad old sad old days.

Now that I think of it, after reading on this thread...I think that probably everyone thinks their government is made up of a bunch of idiots, no matter what country they are in

nope, I don't think so...
I know it for a fact LoL

Come on, we've got people in the government that call their party "Proud of Holland" and then not only start to spread truckloads of hate and crap... but also ask people to donate things like a coffee machine, a trashcan and, I'm serious about this one: a stapler and staples!!! because they don't get any funding from the state unlike the others :s

c'mon, I'm a poor, non-working student and I can buy staples LoL I can actually buy stuff from my own money and use it for my volunteering job and refuse to take the refund they offer me... Then this big minister-woman and her bunch of frikkin idiots (oh, pardon my french) should be able to buy their own trashcan shouldn't they?
I'll donate a whole trashcontainer if they prommiss to throw their crazy plans in hahaha

So (that part of) my government probably wins the idiot-award

Bump for the current election..This is the fourth presidential election the board has seen.
Trivia note: "Family" (aka the greatest episode ever) aired on election eve in 2000.
How is everyone today?
