Travel Tips thread

Postby Saena » Sun Jan 13, 2008 3:00 pm

Hey all-

I don't know if there is a thread for this already on the board, and would love to be directed to it if it exists. I searched through the first 4 pages or so and came up with nothing. If it doesn't exist, then yay! I will start it! :party

This summer, I am going to England for two and a half weeks on a study tour. More pressing, my sister leaves in one week to spend an entire semester in Italy. Neither of us has been out of the country before. We've heard some advice from some people, but I figured a few more tips couldn't hurt. I'm sure many of you Kittens have traveled out of your own country before, and I'd love to hear any advice you all have about traveling abroad. You can be specific to our situations- visiting England or Italy, or being an American traveling overseas- or just give general tips on visiting other countries in general. Or, you can say what you want foreign travelers to know about your own country! I'm very open to suggestions, and making this applicable to many people's experiences as possible.

So, what do I need to know about traveling abroad?

Hi I hope you guys enjoy your trip to England, I agree bring sweets and an umbrella and also bring a thick coat because the English weather is so unpredictable even in summer but you may also want to bring a few light shirts and stuff like that just in case. It may be a good thing to keep a web check of English weather reports for the time when you are due to be here. I dont know if you smoke but there is a smoking ban now in certain places that people go and you must check out the rules that apply to this or you could be fined. Jelly is Jam here- the stuff you spread on toast and your "Jello" is Jelly here.

Some English people are lovely and friendly but as with all over the world there are misrable people too but on the whole you should find the place nice :)

You may want to check out this site http://www.discoverengland.co.uk/ it may help you with your trip :) Enjoy your time here :)

No Problem, glad to help

I was just wondering where in Italy your sister is visiting? and has she got any travel guides on the places she will go? It may be a good idea for her to take a dictionary or an Italian Phrase book with her, and also obvious things like a map of the surrounding area that she will visit I have only been to Italy once and the poeple there are mostly nice and speak English but sometimes I think its nice if we can and speak the foreign languages of the places we visit too. Also I dont know if this is just in Bologna, Italy where I went but I found it hard to find bottled water to buy, we couldnt buy it in alot of places and when we could it was really expensive, so when she does see bottled water I reccomend for her to stock up on it

Pointless question but it got me to wondering...here in the US of A...what we call jelly is made from clear fruit juice...jam is from unstrained juice and preserves are made with chunks of fruit in it...are there different names for each in the UK or is it all just jam?

I'm going to resurrect this thread! I am going to travel overseas to several countries this summer and I was hoping some of you Kittens could give me some ideas of where to go. It'll kinda be like backpacking I guess, but technically I haven't settled on how I am packing. I am going to the places below.

Spain
Italy
France
Germany
Switzerland

Right now I have a few specific cities from each but other than that I don't really know yet. I know I am going to some rock festival in Switzerland.

I would appreciate if anyone could give me some ideas for interesting cities. I've sort of started my internet search but haven't gotten far yet. Also, any places to stay would be great.

Has anyone had any experiences with hostels?

Thanks!

Jam is pretty much the name for all of it - except there's a hierarchy in the quality. American style jelly is down the very bottom :D

Okay to HalfCamel I hope the following info is helpful. Mind you I spoke to a friend of mine who went backpacking to Europe for almost 4 months. Lucky bastard...I love you David! :D So here goes:

Spain -
Barcelona is a must! It's a beautiful city with museums, and all the tourists stuff that people go do.
Ibiza - It's expensive there, but it's a place where you can go to have fun. You may always catch a ferry from Barcelona to Ibiza that's what most people do.

Italy - It all depends on the kind of person you are. I'll explain why I said this.
Florence is party central! That should say it all!
Venice is more lay back. So like I said it depends on the kind of person you are.
Rome is a must hands down! Aside from partying, there is so much to do there. You won't want to leave. Museums, the vatican and all that good stuff is there.

France -
Paris hands down! Like Rome it's a place that has so much to see and do. You won't want to leave from there. It's really expensive there too so be prepared.

Germany -
Berlin is a nice city as well. There is a lot there for you to do too. It's almost like a picture painting. So you should like it there.

Switzerland -
Zurich is a cool city. My friend didn't say much about it cos he didn't stay there long.

It all comes down to what you want to do and how long you plan on staying in each country. There are a couple of things that he recommended so please note the following:

-Make sure you take a credit card, debit card, and cash with you. At least $500 on you. There are times when your debit or credit card may not work so it's good to have cash on you.
-Always carry a map and pen with you. Sometimes you may not understand what a person is saying, but they may help you out by writing something down for you and pointing it out on the map.
-Buy a Eurail Pass. Depending on the pass this can last you for a couple of weeks. You'll be able to travel by train throughout Europe and not have to pay every time. This will save you money.
-Pack the most neccessary items you need only. For sure take a sleeping bag cos if you can't get into a hostel you may have to sleep in a park or something. I know that's crazy, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Like I said limit your packing cos trust me you will be buying stuff. You want to have room to bring back stuff. If it gets to be too much you may always ship your items from where your at back home. Although this can be very expensive, but if you buy too much stuff you may have to do that.
-Hostels you may look up on hostelworld.com. It's a great site that allows you to see the rankings and get all of the info you need for hostels. It varies with each place. Some let you do whatever you want and have no curfews. Others may be more stricter and have curfews. So it all depends. There is also a site called couchsurfing.org. It is what it sounds like. For travelers who are on a budget or running low on funds this can be helpful. You basically crash in a strangers house stay there and eat. People are open to do this for others. You may set up a meeting with the person and take it from there. This can sound unsafe, but from what my friend told me that 90% of people who did this had a pleasant experience. So that may be an option too.
-Go to Barnes and Nobles or wherever to buy Europe on a Shoestring. This is a very informative and helpful book that is great to have with you when you travel.

I think that covers it for now. If there is any other infromation I can help you or anyone else with please don't hesitate to ask.

One more very important thing! Some hostels will ask you to give them your passport to keep temporarly. If you can avoid doing this try to. You may have to pay a small fee for not leaving your passport with them. It's a small price to pay cos if you lose your passport expect to pay big bucks for a new one. Some places won't budge and you will have to give it up and have it returned to you later, but you may convince them other wise. So good luck!

Jenny, Thank you so so much for the info. I appreciate it. You actually mentioned 99% of the places we plan to visit. I am going for 5 weeks (3 to Spain and 2 for the other countries). Two weeks for 4 countries sounds really rushed so we're going to play it by ear. We are planning to stay at each place about 2 days and then moving on.

The thing I am anxious about is the packing. Since we are going to be on the go I don't really want to take a suitcase but then I don't know if I can fit 5 weeks of stuff in a backpack. Any recommendations? For hostels, are there places to lock luggage? I am worried about stuff being stolen and mostly me not being comfortable when we are exploring because my luggage is not safe.

Thanks so much, again!

HC,
You are sooo welcome! Okay I have some more info that may be helpfu to you. You are concerned with your packing. It all depends on you. If you want to get the full on experience and enjoy the moment backpack it! If you want to be more elegant and have more dressy clothes luggage is your answer. It all depends on the type of person you are. If you ask me personally excuse me for being crude, but as my buddy says balls to the walls. I would backpack it and take the most neccessary clothes. Hostels are fully loaded in the sense that you may always wash your clothes. You would see me in the same outfit in all of my pics in different countries. LOL.

Some hostels may have a storage locker and some may not. It all depends. Another factor to consider if the luggage is too big it may not fit in the locker. Since my friend backpacked it he would just leave his backpack on his bed and take off for the day. Just note TAKE YOUR VALUABLES WITH YOU! This includes passport, camera, credit cards, iPod, cell phone or anything that you consider of value. Truth is if someone decides to take your clothes you at least have the most important things on you. You know what I mean?

Take plenty of adapters for any electronic devices you are taking. The following is also important. Go to a store like Best Buy or anywhere you can that sells a pack of outlet converters. You will need those to plug in any devices you have in the walls. Remember since you will be in another country their plugs are different from ours. So these outlets will come in handy. Some hostels do have computers you may use and have internet connection.

When you are out doing your tourist thing don't be afraid of asking people for help. Even if 20 people reject you you will find someone who is willing to help you. Also, look out for any other travelers that are wearing backpacks chances are they know where a hostel is and can be helpful to you with other information.

As soon as you land in the country you start out in. Since you will be in an airport ask for a map. Find out where you are at exactly and where there is a nearby hostel. As far as rushing it in other countries. Don't feel overwhelmed. You have the right idea of playing it by ear. That is how it is. Just go with the flow. I know you'll feel anxious at first, but just relax and take it all in. You'll be good! Have a great time! I wish you all the best! :D If there is anymore info I may be able to provide hit me up!

Take Care,
Jenny B

Sorry to be bumping an old thread, particularly this one since I'm not traveling anywhere ... but I found this information extremely helpful and thought other kittens who are equally clueless about such things could look smart should the topic come up in conversation.

Mrs. gorn bought a jar of Welch's "Farmer's Market" strawberry jam ... only it wasn't really jam, it was listed as "fruit spread" Pretty sure they don't sell "fruit spreads" at genuine farmer's markets, but whatever. Got me wondering again about the difference between jelly, jam, and preserves - and, I suppose, "fruit spread." I seem to recall talking to another kitten about this once some time ago, but when I did a search only this came up. I've really never understood the difference before, nor have I ever heard as definitive an answer as I found here. This makes perfect sense, though.
