amazon.com and amazon.co.uk have removed part of the rating system for all "gay" books so it won't show up amongst bessellers etc. they've done that with several kidas of adult books too

Amazon.de only "cencored" the gaybooks that fit in the "other kinda adult catogory" too, so that's fair imo,

.com and co.uk are stil baaaad for doing this

(I imideately checked the facts muyself after I read it tis afternoon... read it just after ordering 2 new books trough the .de site)

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/in-protest-at-amazons-new-adult-policy
http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/amazonrank

if you have a website/blog/etc, you can post this link;

Amazon Rank

to googlebomb the last loink so it shows up high on search results for amazon

Looks like if I want to find rational, forward thinking people of the 21st century then I will need to IOWA and not California.

Words cannot adequately express how angry i am at this decision. You would think that in 2009, hateful, ignorant bigotry would no longer be an issue. it saddens me that I cna marry pretty much anywhere I want to in this world but my friend, who is gay, cannot in what is supposedly "the great country of freedom". Kinda hard to sell that image when such blatent bigotry is on display.

I do hope that someone mounts a legal challenge and gets it kicked cos it is bad law and a dangerous precedent for other states and countries.

Even Amber remarked on the ruling on Twitter, it was short and to the point but she was obviously unhappy with the ruling.

The States with its ideals for equality of rights that it posits (or dictates?) to the world is not being encircled though in responsibility. I'm pinpointing western culture specifically in this post as being majorly the one responsible for the current problem of legalisation of gay marriage because with the advent of globalisation, media mainstreaming suggests strongly (though subconsciously) that a life experience from a western point of view is highly privileged. And as the legalisation of gay marriage moves into the realm of the protection of cultural rights at an international level ... the source of the conflict is vibrantly clear.

The real challenge lies, still in my point of view, in not fighting for equality of love within all relationships but for encouraging social inclusion of minorities at a global level.

Yesterday, John Lynch the governor of my home state of New Hampshire signed the Gay Marriage bill into law...NH has had Civil Union since January of 2008 (Dia and I have one) but as of January 1st 2009 Marriage will be legal and equal for gay and hetero alike...and in accordance with the law, all pre-existing civil unions will be considered legal marriages...so as of January my wife and I will be legally married! :pinky :pinky :pinky :pride :pride :pride :pride :pride
We are sooooooooooooooooo happy :party :party :party

Now if the other 44 states would just catch up :smash

GLAAD's Third Annual survey of gay people on TV has been released.

http://glaadblog.org/2009/07/27/glaad-r ... ity-index/

Basically, it says if you want to see any, you better pay for cable, and if you want something more than just gay men...you'd better be good at finding needles in haystacks.

HBO received a Good rating and scored the highest rating of the 15 networks evaluated with LGBT characters on shows including True Blood, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and Entourage that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity of the LGBT community. Of HBO’s 14 original series, 10 included LGBT content and 42 percent of the network’s total programming hours included LGBT representation. However, representation of the lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities was minimal.

Times like this I can understand why The L Word, which I think was creatively a failure (to say the very, very least), lasted.

Doesn't make me any happier about it...but I can understand.

I went to a Same-sex marriage protest the other day with my girlfriend... there was some talk about getting it into parliament and stuff but I wasn't too sure what will actually HAPPEN about it. I didn't hear anything on the news about a miracle where it got passed and it's all legal now so I'm guessing nothing :(

I wonder if Australia will come to its senses in my lifetime so I can get married. Oh, I signed a petition too :)

Houston has its first Gay Mayor and I am so proud. Sandi keeps saying this is going to be the best pride ever!!!!!!

Annise Parker elected Houston's next mayor
Nation watches as city becomes the largest in U.S. to choose an openly gay leader
By BRADLEY OLSON
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Dec. 13, 2009, 1:30AM

Annise Parker, current city controller, defeated former City Attorney Gene Locke in Saturday's tight runoff election.

Annise Danette Parker was elected mayor of Houston on Saturday, winning her seventh consecutive city election and becoming both the first contender in a generation to defeat the hand-picked candidate of Houston's business establishment and the first openly gay person to lead a major U.S. city.

Parker, Houston's current city controller who first emerged in the public arena as a gay rights activist in the 1980s, defeated former City Attorney Gene Locke on an austere platform, convincing voters that her financial bona fides and restrained promises would be best suited in trying financial times. Parker, 53, will replace the term-limited Mayor Bill White on Jan. 1.

Her victory capped an unorthodox election season that lacked a strong conservative mayoral contender and saw her coalition of inside-the-Loop Democrats and moderate conservatives, backed by an army of ardent volunteers, win the day over Locke, a former civil rights activist who attempted to unite African-American voters and Republicans.

In complete but unofficial returns, Parker coasted to a comfortable victory with 52.8 percent of the vote to 47.2 percent for Locke. Turnout was 16.5 percent.
‘Join as one community'

When Parker finally appeared at 10:30 p.m., resplendent in a gold pantsuit and pearl necklace, the room at the George R. Brown Convention Center jammed elbow-to-elbow with supporters erupted with a deafening cheer. Some were newcomers to political waters. Some had been with her a dozen years ago when she claimed her first City Council seat.

“Tonight the voters of Houston have opened the doors to history,” she said. “I acknowledge that. I embrace that. I know what this win means to many of us who thought we could never achieve high office. I know what it means. I understand, because I feel it, too. But now, from this moment, let us join as one community. We are united in one goal in making this city the city that it can be, should be, might be, will be.”

Parker harkened back to her earliest days of involvement in civic issues, when she served as president of Neartown Association, saying that work gave her the insight she needed as she headed into public office, and especially an understanding of the human repercussion of politics.

“Hear me: The city is on your side,” she said. “I learned about the problems and the needs and hopes of our city at the neighborhood level. I understand what needs to be done to move us forward.”

After introducing her family, including her partner, Kathy Hubbard, their three children and her mother, Kay Parker, she made a post-campaign promise to those who live in Houston.

“I promise to give to citizens an administration of honesty, integrity and transparency,” she said. “The only special interest will be the public. We are in this together. We rise or fall together.”
Locke's concession

Locke conceded at the Hyatt Regency shortly after 10 p.m., celebrating the diverse coalition of ethnic groups, unions, business leaders and political heavyweights represented in his campaign.

In a short and gracious speech, he congratulated Parker and called on supporters to get behind the mayor-elect.

“Don't let past disappointments, past anger, past frustrations guide us into the future,” he said. “Let's unite and work together.”

In many ways, the race was framed by the financial anxieties voters have experienced over the past 18 months. At the polls, voter after voter cited Parker's experience watching over the city's $4 billion budget as a primary consideration in their choice.

Instead of being turned off by a politician reluctant to promise the world, voters responded to Parker's straight talk about all that might not be possible in the coming years.

Dozens of Houstonians interviewed by the Houston Chronicle said they appreciated her often blunt answers that made Locke's proposals seem vague.

She attacked his past as a general counsel to unpopular local governmental agencies and their debt problems, painting him as a “lawyer-lobbyist” in broad strokes that sought to cast doubt in the very arenas in which voters perceived Parker to have strengths.
Efforts against her

Although the general election heated up toward the end, Parker's sexuality never emerged until the field had been narrowed to two candidates. The race was also unusual for the relatively even split among four contenders in the first round of voting Nov. 3. To win, Parker and Locke had to earn the support of 70,000 voters — slightly more than 40 percent of those who cast their ballots in the general election.

Less than two weeks into the five-week runoff, social conservatives mounted a campaign to turn voters against Parker because of her sexual orientation, sending out mailers and e-mail blasts that cast the election as a referendum on gay rights.

While some voters acknowledged it was a matter of concern, many saw no problem voting for a gay candidate, especially given Parker's assurances that she did not intend to expand gay rights through her position as mayor.

Ray Hill, the dean of Houston's gay activists, saw victory in more ways than one.

“For me, it means 43 years of hard work has finally paid off,” Hill said. “For Houston, it means we have finally reached the point where being gay cannot be used as a wedge issue to divide the community and prevent us from reaching our aspirations. Annise Parker is not our mayor — she is the city's mayor.”

Ran into this on one of my random Yahoo news views, after going through about 3 pages of "how to make your man/woman love you", "look at this celebrity's fashion disaster!" and "Tiger Woods is a prick" stories (seriously, wtf is up with that?).

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/1001 ... ge_federal

Sounds like it'll be a very controversial case on both sides. Can the supreme court really overturn Prop 8? I was under the impression that as soon as the vote went through, that was the end. And if this is overturned, is that it? Can the Prop 8 loonies go back to the drawing board and pull something back out of their asses?

Let me brush the dust off of myself for a moment. Ah, better.

In the US, we have essentially 2 levels of court systems (yes, I am skipping the circuit courts). The states get to make their own laws and have their own court system that can try state law if there is question of it being valid as far as the state constitution/law goes. The federal government has the same. Federal (national) law trumps state law. So, when something like Prop 8 comes into effect due to popular vote it can be challenged and make it's way up to the state Supreme Court. This has already happened. California's state Supreme Court upheld Prop 8. Whatever the state Supreme Court rules stands in that state. In this case, it looks like they want to go all the way up to the federal Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the land. Whatever the federal Supreme Court decides on will become THE precedent for the country. It will trump California's ruling, whether it be for or against the right of marriage for all.

I kind of hope that they bring up the idea of marriage as a contract. I don't understand the idea of marriage purely as an institution to raise children. It's so disconnected from reality that it doesn't stand, IMO.
