No, not a guess. Wish I could be that lucky with guesses though, otherwise I'd have more luck with the lottery.
Can't be sure where I got that from, maybe one of Ted Moseby's fun-facts or from when the Doctor and Martha's visit...

Thanks for the kind words Jen, and a big round of applause to you too, afterall this tie-breaker was because you only got one question wrong as well. It was neck and neck all the way there!

Three cheers for masterjendu and Paint the Sky and everyone else who took part!

Hi quizzers, well, I waited for hondos to submit her answers, but as she seems to be a no show, here is the correct order of minerals in R5:

Talc
Gypsum
Calcite
Fluorite
Apatite
Orthoclase/Feldspar
Quartz
Topaz
Corundum
Diamond

Congratulations to HC, and well done to the rest of you, there were some pretty impressive scores all round :clap

And, a big mention for Boschi, who for the first time, managed to compete in every round ;-) :applause

Maybe she should get a special Foovatar just for that - lol.

I'd just like to say how much I covet that Winner's Foovatar, I'd even trade the penguin for it.

I've been thinking of doing a music round - naming the song and the artist after listening to the intro or a snippet of the lyrics sort of thing. I know how to rip and save the files, but I've nowhere to upload them to. If anyone can help with that one, give me advice where I can upload etc, I think it would be a fun round.

Thanks again to all of you who took part :applause :applause :applause :clap :clap :clap

and still finished so close to the bottom of the rankings that only an inexplicable choke by gorn in the final round saved me from last place. (Duuuuude, what happened?)

But I shall return! I have clever tricks and secret plans for next time, MKF.
The Foovatar wil be mine, mine I tell you. Just you wait my pretties, just you wait ... (insert maniacal laughter here).

Congrats to HC and thanks to PtS and to everyone who participated - fun stuff.

Alas, you have now discovered my weakness - my vast knowledge does not extend to the Animal or Mineral. Come to think of it, I don't know all that much about Vegetables, either ... Seriously, I thought I was doing pretty well until those last two rounds. I had no clue what you call those groups of animals, and the mineral one I believe I submitted in reverse order by mistake (hardest to softest). Not that it would have made much difference - I knew Diamonds & Talc were at the extremes, but didn't have a clue about anything in between.

Even the round before those two, that question about Douglas Adams? Honestly, what is the difference between a Porpoise and a Dolphin???

Anyway, I enjoyed the experience and I'll do it again. I may have to cheat liberally if the Rounds wander off into unfamiliar territory, but so be it!

Congratulations to HC for a most impressive win!

I've had a word with resident quizmaster extraordinaire, Paint the Sky and we've worked it out so I'll be guest host the next quiz, giving PtS the chance to take part with everyone else this time. :)

I've played the format slightly regarding the five categories but nothing too extreme.

It'll be starting on Sunday 28th of September and these will be the five categories for you to have a think about in the meantime.

Pass the science ingredient.
Riddle me this.
Shake those spears!
Apocalypse Wednesday.
Putting the art into smart.

There will be one picture round and two of the others will be multiple choice, but I'm not letting on which ones yet....

Only five entries for round 1, so in the sake of competition I'm going to hold back the answers for now, and give anyone else wanting to take part a bit longer to formulate* their answers.
*(Ha, see what I did there?)

Here's the scores for our five on-time entries:

masterjendu - 18
Paint the Sky - 10
Foomatic - 12
hondos - 16
Knock yourself out - 16

Now onwards with round 2, no multiple choice on this one I'm afraid, so you're on your own to figure out the solutions this time around to these ten riddles.
2 points for each correct answer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Round 2 - Riddle me this
#1
What gets larger when it's turned upside down?
#2
I am the beginning of sorrow, and the end of sickness.
You cannot express happiness without me, yet I am in the midst of crosses.
I am always in risk, yet never in danger.
You may find me in the sun, but I am never out of darkness.
What am I?
#3
What do you break by naming it?
#4
You can take away the whole and still have some left.
You can take away some and still have the whole left.
What is it?
#5
What five-letter word has six left when you take two letters away?
#6
What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?
#7
The more you take, the more you leave behind. What are they?
#8
2 9 3 1 8 4 3 6 5 7
What number comes next in this sequence?
#9
What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?
#10
Which female animal can you name by putting five in front of nine and adding two thirds of ten?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Best of luck everyone!

HC, I checked my answers on google, and by my reckoning the questions I answered correctly are 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, and 10.

Dammit, I'm fighting for every point cos I think I sucked in Round 2 as well. I only hope round 3 is about the bard of avon, cos if it's about Zulu's I'm well and truly f**ked :rofl

ETA: It's true, I am as thick as pig-shit, I got number 2 wrong. Should've checked the wording of that question better :smash
