I have said it before and I shall say it again, Wayne Rooney is nothing more than a pie eater who can very rarely last half a match let alone a full one.

Mind you I know of at least one fellow footy loving kitten who likes him, she'll no doubt defend him later on.

The main reason players from the forest youth team aren't included in the England squad is because they play for the not so mighty reds. I have this arguement with my brother every week. Anyho, there is only one team worth talking about from Nottingham and thats the wonderful Magpies.

One more thing, bye bye Beckham, I'm sure you'll love it on the bench at Real.

Rooney's not a bad player- but he's not that good either. And he had a pitiful game Wednesday. I think he just looks good at Everton.

But the guy turned down Liverpool, so in my book, he's useless anyway. If he can't see that the boys in Red are the Pride Of Merseyside, then what chance does he have of much else?

Well Beckham has finally gone then, it doesn't suprise me that he opted not to go to Barca, but I really don't think Real was the best choice for him, I think he going to be spending a lot of time of the bench. Also can you imagine the arguements which are going to go on between him and Carlos as to who gets to take the freekicks?

Also, Kewell, come to highbury, you know you want to, it is better than joining Man Utd or staying at Leeds, mind you playing for Stoke would be better than staying at Leeds. ;)

Caz, I agree with you, Sir Alex has made a mistake, he should never have sold Beckham but then again Alex has a history of selling players who he thinks have become to big for their boots (and in making that comment I am not implying that Beckham had become a showoff) but he offloaded Ince when everyone thought it was a bad idea and Jaap Stam was also shown the door.

At the end of the day, it is money that talks in football and in the current climate with so many clubs going into administration no one can really turn down a deal which is intially for 25 million but has the potential to rise to 50 million depending on the fortunes of the club involved. All I hope now is that Beckham is given the chance to play to his full potential, as he truely does love the game. Oh and I also hope that Real keep their greedy little hands off Wenger, the manager ain't going anywhere.

I've just heard that ex-West Ham player Marc Vivien Foe has collapsed and died during the semi final of the Confederations Cup at the age of 28. This has really shocked me, he was an excellent footballer and, by all accounts, a nice bloke. My condolences to his family and friends.

C'mon Man U fan's. Let's be havin' you. The battle of Britain is on!!! And we're sooo, gonna kick your ass!

At drinking the most pints before the game, 'cause let's face it Rangers are going to be slaughtered on the park. :p

I'm actually quietly optimistic about this draw. The last two times Rangers and Celtic have been told they'd be humiliated by English opponents we've both gone on to win. Then been put out of the competition by far easier opponents. We're contrary like that.

Of all the groups I'm most looking forward to Chelsea's group. There shouldn't be one easy game in that group.

Celtic, jammy buggers, seem to be in the easiest group. They're almost certain for second place but I think they could sneak first if their midfield can keep the pace up for 90 minutes.

Anyway, good luck to all of the British teams in the competition. Except Man U, obviously, because they're in our group.

Oh, go on Man U as well. But only as long as we get one of the qualifying spots along with them.

Well, it looks like the WUSA is out of business. They don't have enough money to begin it's 4th season, despite the players taking a pay cut.

This doesn't surprise me that much; since looking through this thread nearly all of them deal w/ male English soccer, and only 2 at the most dealt w/ the WUSA (not even a mention of the freakin' Founders Cup :confused ). If the league can't even get the Kittens attention, then you knew there was going to be a problem.

It's a shame. I saw a lot the 1999 Women's World Cup matches on TV; the finale's end was thrilling. I even saw WUSA games on PAX, antenna permitting. Hopefully, after this year's World Cup some sponsors can come in and save the league. Hope the US takes it all again; good luck to Mia and the gang. :dance

Re: The all purpose Football or Soccer Thread

Obviously it's sad that the league's had to fold. They invested $100 million over 3 seasons according to that article. That seems like a hell of a lot of money for an 8 team league, where's all the money gone? I think the trouble may have been setting up a professional league from the off. In England it started out as an amateur league and has gradually built up. All of the women's teams are run in parallel with the men's team as part of the same club; for instance you have Fulham FC and Fulham Ladies, they wear the same kit etc and so have a ready made fan base. Sure, the attendances are nowhere near those for the male game but you at least have that core interest. Also the league/cup structure is mirrored; the women's FA Cup, the FA Women's Premier League etc, so you have teams and competitions that are recognisable to existing football fans.

Also, I think most of the people posting on this thread are in England, so aren't going to talk about the WUSA, or probably even be interested in it - if they're going to support a ladies team, it would likely be the ladies team of the club they support. The West Ham Ladies team is currently scaling the dizzy heights of the South East Counties Combination League, these matches aren't televised, much like lower league men's matches aren't televised. Hence my lack of talking about it because no one else will know anything about it. The male equivalent of this would probably be if someone started talking about Appleby Frodingham in the Samsan Sports Central Midlands Football League.

I don't know how/if WUSA and MLS were linked but maybe it would be a good way to go. I know that football isn't so big in the US as it is here yet, but one of the best women's teams are Doncaster Belles and their male counterparts (Doncaster Rovers) are in Nationwide Division 3 and don't have vast amounts of money to splash around, but still have built up a very strong ladies team. I think this shows that it's the support at the basic club level that's important and not just the financial side.

You bring up a good point here. The WUSA and MLS were not linked; initially MLS was going to start up a women's league first since male & female soccer at the amatuer levels is headed by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and that org was/is a prime player in the MLS. But the women balked at that idea; they wanted to be independent from the men and have a say in the league's operation, plus they'd get bigger salaries as a result. It seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess.

Well, since the plurality of Kittens on this board are American females, I'd have thought that the WUSA would be a hot topic; and since the US has the Women's Cup again maybe even hotter that normal. Granted their are/were only 8 cities represented, but w/ national network TV coverage (even if it's only PAX) that allows people in non-WUSA cities to still have rooting interests; maybe they'd follow a particular player they like. Since I played soccer as a youth, I was probably more interested in the league than the average casual sports fan, and w/ MLS primarly on cable (which I still don't have...yet) I appreciated this exposure.

All in all, it's disappointing.

Re: The all purpose Football or Soccer Thread

Well, this thread was originally started by an English kitten who wanted to discuss their league in a particular thread instead of having it all over the board like it used to be. I personally liked watching the WUSA. Mostly because Atlanta rocked. :)

But I liked watching it because I felt it was about time that women got to play soccer professionally. Also, because I too played soccer when I was a kid. Okay, so I sucked at it and quit when I was 11 but still... I liked it. And, I'm not surprised that this thread is filled with talk of English football. Where were you when I was trying to bring some WUSA action in here? I tried, but I didn't feel it really belonged in this thread since as you said the majority was talk of the English league.

I feel sad about the league folding. I think they needed to do a better job of getting the word out on their league though. When it first started there was all the talk about it.. then it just kinda stopped. Hopefully, the league will start back up after the Women's World Cup. Though I suppose that all depends on how well we do in it. I'm crossing my fingers... and I'll be watching.

Doing a 6-week temp assignment that required an 1-1/2 hour commute each way, probably. That sort of thing take a lot out of you, and I hardly wanted to touch my PC at home after spending 8+ hours on one at work. But it's all over now and I'm back to being unemployed and having no life, which leads me back to spending more time on the Kitten Boards again. Since there was no momentum for the league on this thread I thought I'd wait for it to build before I posted, but it never did and then the league was suspended. Grrr. Arrrgh.

I agree w/ u that our ladies have to win this sucker if the WUSA has any chance of resurfacing. They got all sorts of media play after 1999 and they will probably get it again if they repeat as champs. And I apologize to all the Swedish kittens here, but your girls are going DOWN IN FLAMES. :punish :boot

Anyway, the german team looks strong, and of course the american team. I wonder if we should have a world cup thread, if anyone feels like making it please do so!

I'm watching the match between Nigeria and PR Korea.

Do you usually have the grass that long for football matches there? We tend to have it much shorter here so the ball moves faster.

For those of you unable to watch the games and you are in the US and have cable in some kind of big city, spanish cable channel Galavision has many games. They have the Nigeria/ Korea game now and will have the Germany/Canada game on later. It's in spanish but hey you can turn the sound down if you can't understand. We know american networks are notorious about showing only US games.

Just watched teh Australia - Russia match. I can't believe Russia missed that penalty shot, wow. But they came back to win it. I didn't get to see Brazil this weekend, that's a shame, wanted to see them play.
