Ha, oh, I still haven't decided. I have issues.

It's like just under 2,000 words a day, right?

Heh, and Holley, if you do write that story, I totally want to read it, too.

I always want to start out writing, "It was a dark and stormy night."

Post it on TIE?!? Image

OMG! I hadn't even thought of that. But...how can I write total shit if I think other people are going to read it? I hear Carrie's mom saying to me "They're all gonna laugh at you!!!" Image

lol, I don't know. I'll think about it. Maybe I could at least post the bits I think I can stand to share, the least shitty bits. And trust me, it is pretty shitty so far. I sooooo don't know what I'm doing. Fun!

Kathy, yeah, 50,000 words in 30 days breaks down to 1667 words a day. If you are a decent typist and don't stop to think too much as you are writing, you can write that much in about 2 hours fairly easily. If you really get on a roll, you could do it in an hour. So it's really not that much of a time commitment. The hard part (at least for most people I think) is not stopping to edit yourself or be critical of what you're writing. If you force yourself to keep your fingers moving no matter WHAT, some really interesting things will magically appear on the page. And of course, all NaNo cares about is quantity so quality is entirely irrelevant. Unless people want you to post it on TIE. ;)

I'm a big believer in the name having to be just right for the character. Even in my own mind I think I make certain assumptions based on names. Someone else's assumptions may be different to mine but I think we all do it to some extent.

But I am struggling to decide what my assumption about

Drizzly K. Repletion

would be...

Elderly, probably from the US and beyond that... I can't decide ;)

I am going to get banned for triple posting. For fuck sake, TRIPLE posting?!?

No, no, evil mods, I am "bringing legitimate new info" to this thread. Tom Robbins' pep talk made me cry.

For those of you who might not be signed up and receiving the pep talk emails, here is a paste of his letter. It's good advice for any and all writing, art, and probably life in general.

Tom Robbins wrote:Dear NaNoWriMo participant,

When you sit down to begin that novel of yours, the first thing you might want to do is toss a handful of powdered napalm over both shoulders---so as to dispense with any and all of your old writing teachers, the ones whose ghosts surely will be hovering there, saying such things as, "Adverbs should never be...", or "A novel is supposed to convey...", et cetera. Enough! Ye literary bureaucrats, vamoose!

Rules such as "Write what you know," and "Show, don't tell," while doubtlessly grounded in good sense, can be ignored with impunity by any novelist nimble enough to get away with it. There is, in fact, only one rule in writing fiction: Whatever works, works.

Ah, but how can you know if it's working? The truth is, you can't always know (I nearly burned my first novel a dozen times, and it's still in print after 35 years), you just have to sense it, feel it, trust it. It's intu itive, and that peculiar brand of intuition is a gift from the gods. Obviously, most people have received a different package altogether, but until you undo the ribbons you can never be sure.

As the great Nelson Algren once said, “Any writer who knows what he's doing isn't doing very much.” Most really good fiction is compelled into being. It comes from a kind of uncalculated innocence. You need not have your ending in mind before you commence. Indeed, you need not be certain of exactly what's going to transpire on page 2. If you know the whole story in advance, your novel is probably dead before you begin it. Give it some room to breathe, to change direction, to surprise you. Writing a novel is not so much a project as a journey, a voyage, an adventure.

A topic is necessary, of course; a theme, a general sense of the nexus of effects you'd like your narrative to ultimately produce. Beyond that, you simply pack your imagination, your sense of humor, a character or two, and your personal world view into a little canoe, push it out onto the vast dark river, and see where the currents take you. And should you ever think you hear the sound of dangerous rapids around the next bend, hey, hang on, tighten your focus, and keep paddling---because now you're really writing, baby! This is the best part.

It's a bit like being out of control and totally in charge, simultaneously. If that seems tricky, well, it's a tricky business. Try it. It'll drive you crazy. And you'll love it.

Tom Robbins

Katharyn saved you from the dreaded triple post. No banning for you, yet.

Yeah, I definitely need help with names. I always want to pick the perfect name, but then that takes forever and I lose motivation. So, picking something completely random is probably the way to go. Or just something I won't get sick of seeing right away. Heh.

Heh. Zombie platypus glowstick collectors need names? How about "Zombie Platypus Glowstick Collector" -- with the added advantage that you've got four, count 'em, four words every time you mention its name.

*looks around* I guess we may not be talking about Zombie platypus glowstick collectors specifically, eh?

p.s. don't forget Mr Ian Woon!

lol, watty, well, I'm talking about zombie platypus glowstick collectors, although there is only one of those in my story. And they aren't zombies in their own world, but only become zombies when they cross over into other worlds. Sort of. Something like...the force that holds your atoms and molecules together is specific to your world and is only sustained for so long when you venture into another world. Perhaps unless you have PUMPKIN INNARDS!!! Or glowsticks. Or both.

Wow, I bet the accumulated word count from naming her Zombie Platypus Glowstick Collector would add up to hundreds of words. I hadn't thought of that. But her name is Carmen now and I happy with that. Ha, good ol' Mr. Ian Woon. I have never used him before, but I think I might this time.

Katharyn, anyone named Drizzly has to be from your part of the world! Because, you know, it's so drizzly there, drizzling all the time and even when it's not drizzling, it looks like it's going to. Right? Right? Yes!

Kathy, stop posting here and start writing!!! *pokes

Come on, y'all, NaNo is like 4 days away. Where are all the Kitten wrimos?

I lost my mind doing last year's NaNo. I am never writing about platypuses again. This year, I am writing...I don't know what, but it's going to be about humans. Yay!

How about the rest of you? ARE there any of you? What are you writing about?

I'm going to get a late start this year because of my work schedule. Grrrr to that, but it's not really a problem. I can catch up.

Do any of y'all ever go to any of your local events, even if only to give your ML a hug? I'm the Birmingham Ala. ML and I could use a hug. Seriously. All MLs should get hugs!

watty! You've returned!

Thanks! *hugs*

I haven't done much prep for this NaNo. I seem to have a better time when I don't, so I'm definitely in the seat-of-the-pants camp. I'll just pick a place and zoom in and see who's there and what they've got going on and if it's interesting enough, I'll follow them around for a month. Fun times.

I have a long (ish) work all planned out, so I might try to do the NaNo thing. I've never done it before, but considering that I wrote my first book in less than a month, maybe I can pull it off.

Also, my gf is using NaNoWriMo as a teaching tool for her 7th grade english students. She figures that the best way to teach elements of fiction is by guiding the students through the actual story writing process. I thought it sounded like a great idea. Maybe I should listen to her.

I've heard wonderful things about the nano young writers program, best of luck to your gf's students. And to yourself too, if you decide to join us.

Everybody add me as a writing buddy! I'm soynut over there.

We had our Kick-Off tonight and I got hugs! :-D

It was our most well-attended Kick-Off ever. I was shocked at how many people showed up. I was expecting maybe 5 or 6, but I got 22. I am going to have to rethink the location of our TGIO if that many people plan to come to it, especially since TGIOs are usually wrimo+guest. In past years, attendance at the TGIO has usually been much greater than at the Kick-Off, for some reason. And I was definitely missing tonight some regular people who always come to stuff. I don't know if I can manage 30+ at a TGIO. We are a small region and I'm not used to the numbers that larger regions usually have.

Good times, good times.

I wish so hard that I didn't have to work all weekend long, because now I'm all kinds of itchy to get started and it would be delicious to know that I can begin writing in about 24 hours. Alas, I shall be AT WORK tomorrow at midnight. :happy

Anyway, about the YWP, I've heard great things about it, too. I know someone who's a teacher and has done it and it seems to really be awesome for the students (and the teacher, too). Last year, they had a public reading in December and, I'm telling you, those kids are talented.

Happy noveling, Kitten wrimos!

Yay fellow nanoites. Hi watty-boss.

I decided last week to write in another one of these. I completed one in 2005 but I had to resign up because my screename went missing. I guess it got dumped due to inactivity.

Anyway, I think I am going with a detective murder/mystery type story set in wine country. I think I can get a good start this weekend because I have a shoulder injury that is keeping me from much activity. Good luck all.

I'll be joining my local wrimo's to pen my next KB story, "Revenant". I tried last year, but didn't amount to much. This year, with the recent success of my last story under my belt, I'm quite excited to give it a try!

The countdown is on, fellow nanoites! Well, in my time zone at least. 5 hours to go!

Timezone-wise I'm ahead of you guys so I started already. I'm jetlagged and woke up at 4.30am. Wrote for a couple of hours then dragged myself back to bed. I broke up my day with 45mins of running and meeting with my gf.

And now I'm very very tired. But I managed 2,208 words today, so I'm on track.
