Well, I read the article, which was okay but I also read another one about Tara on this site and I wasn't very pleased at the way the writer looked at Tara and the W/T relationship.

The writer seemed to be sitting on hot bricks for getting a new (better and more interesting) gf for Willow.

Sydney dyke scene

Postby semiramis » Sun Aug 04, 2002 6:07 pm

Hi Indygo

I'm so glad you concur with my feelings regarding the scene here. I thought I was some complete oddbod because I didn't feel at home with my "own kind". I couldn't wear the uniform if I tried, and I'm fed up with feeling like a failure because I don't. It's so rigid here, I can't believe it.

And I really should join a lesbian cultural group if that is such a good way to meet women!

being butch

Postby semiramis » Sun Aug 04, 2002 6:12 pm

Dear friskylez

In Sydney we use the term butch, merely to refer to a certain style of dress, because here it's all about your outfit. as you so correctly state, people are dressing the part so other people know that they are gay. And there isn't anything wrong with that.....

Please don't take offense, I certainly understand your definition of butch. Butch and femme is almost non-existent in Sydney, and the only time a butch/femme couple were printed on the cover of our lesbian monthly, there was an outcry about "outdated patriarchal images".

Probably from the same very masculine women who feel free to pour drinks down the back of femmes that they mistakenly perceive as straight.....

Robin I agree, I didn't like that article on Tara, either, but there's another article on the same site that takes the opposite view (i.e. a positive one) of the Willow/Tara relationship ( at http://www.afterellen.com/tv/buffy.html ) - I think it was originally set up as a point-counterpoint kind of thing.

I just read the article, but I'm still a bit cranky because of that ignorant point of view in the other article.

Semiramis, I understand that is not your perception of butch and femme, it just pisses me off that those Aussie butches give us a bad name grrrrrrr...Pouring drinks down the backs of femmes, geez luiz, id kick their ass if i saw em doing that to someone, i dont care who it was, but especially a femme...

Anyway i wasnt ranting at you or the person who wrote the post, just tired of the misconceptions..The people on this board are the coolest and most accepting even if they cant relate or dont understand some things :grin

New Brian DePalma film

Postby tyche » Sat Aug 10, 2002 11:07 am

I read today that 'Femme Fatale', the new DePalma film, apparently has a lead character who's a lesbian. Having looked it up on the IMDb, it looks exploitative, and DePalm tends to be misogynistic. But anyway, here's the IMDb page if you're interested:

uk.imdb.com/Title?0280665

And you never know, it could turn out to be okay... [cue pigs flying]

Ok so Amy tips me to watch The Wire, because... the lesbian got shot.

And so I tuned in and the sad thought was, I was glad that at least they had the decency not to show the actual shooting. Of course she seemed happy with her lover earlier at a bar. Hmm don't know if she's dead. It's a bit of a cliffhanger. Bullets, blood and lesbians. At least they never promised us otherwise.

Wow,

somebody beat me to posting about this. I unfortunately didn't get tipped about what was coming. I'm shocked, numbed, saddened and in disbelief.

Another dead lesbian on TV (The Wire doesn't really do the cliffhanger thing). And people say the cliche doesn't exist, doesn't happen.

What is it about the image of a dead lesbian that makes it so appealing to otherwise creative, thoughtful men such as Joss Wheden and David Simmon? I have so much respect for the work David Simmon has done - Homicide was a great book and one of the best TV shows ever.

I guess what I really want to know is why did he make Kima a lesbian and opt to kill her? Is it cool to kill lesbians, is it more tragic, was it the only way he could make a lesbian character sympathetic? I mean why not make her straight and kill her?

I don't get it. Man this is depressing.

I just wanted to say that although it is true that lost and delirious is one of the saddest movies i ever seen, it's also one of the most beautiful. And in my opinion, it's the best lesbian movie ever. Piper perabo and Jessica paré are both outstanding in it.

Oh, and i wanted to ask: has anyone seen the canadian movie "revoir julie"? I heard it was great and before i decide to buy it on amazon, i'd like a confirmation that it's worth it.

UK TV - A and E

Postby tommo » Mon Aug 12, 2002 12:07 pm

The new character in this series on Tuesday nights, played by Jaye Griffiths, is a lesbian. I heard it when my parents were watching it last week. Now, without wanting to get my hopes up too much (I mean, Jaye Griffiths is yummy), I might have to start watching this, sigh. Don't wanna, but ya know, gotta support the lesbo street cred that UK TV has. Or, uh, not.

I'm keeping a tally of my "Crazy Lesbian of the Week" list. Zoe Tate is still number one; that's for sure. :rolleyes Don't give her a girlfriend! Let's make her insane instead!

Lost And Delirious

Postby GracefulVictory » Mon Aug 12, 2002 12:54 pm

I have to agree with you pikachu1060. Breaks my heart to watch it. Piper Pearabo is excellent and Jessica Pare amazing. Their scenes together were the most touching and intense. I could feel all the emotions throughout this movie. The passion, the delight, the confusion... Augh... So much for one movie to portray. It left me a littel lost and delirous.

Oh yeah, i can't agree more... I went to see it at a festival with my best male friend, and he was like the only guy in the theater. But anyway, he liked it a lot, and after seeing it, we went to have a drink, and we were like "oh my god, how is it possible? Those two girls just shared such a beautiful love. How could that end like this??"

And there is such a great chemistry between piper perabo and jessica paré. Really, i didn't know what to expect before i went to see it, but i wasn't at all disappointed, on the contrary, when i got back home, i ordered it right away on amazon. That's a real must seen movie!

New Showtime lesbian-centric pilot, Earthlings

Anybody know anything about when this might air? I hear Pam Grier and Jennifer Beal star in it. Heh. Cooooool.

Directed by Rose Troche, of Go Fish fame... hmmm... hope she's a better director than she is an actress. :hmm

MTV Brazil

Postby Lusciousbr » Mon Aug 12, 2002 7:45 pm

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, but since this is an 'Other Lesbians in the Media' thread and people who post and lurk in this board come from all over the world...

Here in Brazil we have a TV Show on our Brazilian MTV that promotes dates between young couples (well, all of you might have an equivalent TV show in your own country). The fact is that, last year, this show matched these two guys and they actually kissed each other at the end of the show, which was really (and I mean reaaaaally) something unexpected to see in such a conservative country as Brazil.

Well, now we are finally going to have a lesbian version of that. MTV Brazil announced today that, after several months looking for the 'right' woman to play the one who will choose one of the other four girls (yeah, she'll have to choose one out of four), they found her. And yes, there may be kisses and hugs by the end of it. And my parents are going to be watching! Double yeah! :bounce

And the show will probably air between October and November.

The picture of the chosen girl is this one: www2.uol.com.br/mixbrasil...812/01.shl

Julia I did a little checking, are you sure it was picked up? Because it looks to me that they cast the pilot in L.A. in late May but they have not shot anything after that as far as I can tell. Perhaps the pilot was a bust?

Edited to add: Looks like they shot the pilot in Vancouver in July, perhaps as a TV movie and potential series.

I read that Pam's character tattoo's her body with the names of each of the women she sleeps with!

Queer As Folk this ain't going to be. I don't think we are going to be seeing nice domestic lesbians on this one.

As for the Wire - I have to say I like the show and at least in this case she is a cop.

Also look for another Lifetime movie this fall about a married woman who falls in love with another woman in her office and then realizes she's been gay all along. I can't remember who it was that was cast as the married woman but I remember think interesting choice.

I just found this great Russian band... Well, it's not really a band, it's two girls, and they made an English song about lesbians, and i just love it. The videoclip is really, but it mean really great. You can find it on www.tatugirls.com/ and you go in the audio/video section. It's called "all the things she said"... Really, you should go and watch it, it's really worth the try;)

Well, okay, i know i have kinda weird tastes in music, but i really thing this one is great. And even if you don't like the music, the clip is really well-made;)

Edited to add: this is the direct link to the videoclip, hoping it works...
