Hey Alcy do you prefer fiction or non-fiction? I was curious about the book you are reading. I could google it up but :blush I prefer hearing your view.

Hi Betsy, you know, I go through phases of reading a whole swag of non-fiction and polar exploration happens to be one of my favourite non-fiction topics...When I get hooked on a topic like that I tend to try and find fiction books dealing with the subject as a complement to the non-fiction. When I saw that Dan Simmons had written a book looking at the Franklin expedition I was sold, Dan Simmons is a great author.
With this specific subject I felt like I needed the fiction because no one knows the full story of what happened and I always felt like the non-fiction accounts were missing the ending, so to read an ending, even if it is completely made up (and in the case of Simmons completely unrealistic) is a fitting addition to my reading.

So after all that, I would say I enjoy both non-fiction and fiction in healthy doses at the right time!

I've just finished this particular book and my opinion is that it's fantastic, Simmons writes great characters, both good and evil and his descriptive prose puts you right in there. I would definitely reccommend it, not light reading though, it can be quite tough going just because of the sheer hopelessness of their situation.

If you are asking what I'm currently reading, as in "currently" currently, it's about isocosts and isoquant graphs, the whole economics crap..(I'm 4th year high school and slaving away)

But the book I'm currently reading is 'The Once and Future King' for my English class.

Just finished reading 'Always' by Nicola Griffith, sequel to The Blue Place and Stay, not a bad light read, although I just couldn't get over the fact that the new love interest was named 'Kick'. Oh for the love of god...

There's nothing harder to get into than a book with badly named characters!

You are sooooo right about a character having a terrible name. In the movie BOUND I just could not deal with the woman being named 'Corky'. Geez.

Ha, I agree about Corky, I love Bound but it totally ruins Gina Gershon's hotness by calling her Corky

OK, I admit I picked it up because Amber recommended it in an interview, but it really is a good book

A space opera called 'The Prefect' by Alastair Reynolds, the man is a genius!

And a biogrpahy about Katherine Hepburn by William J Mann, it's definitely the best biography of her out there, a great read.

Just finished The Strange Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. by... I forget. I liked it, although I wish I had been a tad more awake during the moments I was reading it. Some of the side tangents would've been more interesting if it hadn't been a bed time book.

Just started The Salt Dancers by Ursula Hegi
So far, so good - one nice and vivid set of images, a little family intrigue, and an interesting main character.
Don't confuse me with your reasonableness.
