thrilledbymaclay, agreed about Dawn. Just wanted you to know you are not alone, but now very quickly back on topic.
A very interesting topic, I wish kitties would post some pics to go along with the descriptions I have been reading, especially Warduke.

I will do it as soon as I have reinstalled my scanner, hee but I don't want to be the only one. Anyway, I am still not too clear on how the foreign, especially the US school systems work, not even after having watched all those high school series. I will give a very brief rundown on the Dutch one (as it was in my time) before I share my woes of old.
2 years of kindergarten age 4-6
6 years of junior school age 6-12
4 to 6 years of high school depending on the level age 12-19
Followed by either work, university or other forms of professional training etc.
I went to a very good and pleasant high school from 1983-1991. The kind I went to is considered the highest level, which sounds snotty but that is just the way it is, it is meant as a preparation for university. I had a good time and that is part of the reason why it took me 8 years instead of 6, hee, well and puberty was another reason. I hated that for reasons I won't get into now.
Appearance wise I have changed a LOT since then and not just by growing older. When I think back on how I looked in my first 3 years I can only say: DORK. I wore uncool matching completely boring clothes. I had long straight hair and eventhough I felt fat I was thin and utterly unathletic. The one hobby that I had was chess and we did not have a chess club in my school though I helped trying to start one which died a quick death. I was uncomfortable going out eventhough I already knew and loved beer and I pretty much avoided social situations as much as possible. Despite all that I had nice friends and was not the class nerd. I must say that I must have had a nice class the first 3 years as I cannot remember anyone being picked upon.
Then I flunked 3rd grade and for 2 whole days I was stuck in a horrible class filled with preppy stuck up self proclaimed popular trendy snotnoses and a few girls who actually were my friends and one that I actually fell in love with later. I quickly changed class and got stuck in one with a high level of nerds and basically everyone was nice again. Hee. That is when my looks changed and I don't think for the better. I cut my hair short and wore it in some punkish style, but without colors or piercings and I started wearing some strange clothes that I cannot accurately describe, a bit hippy-ish perhaps, but without the colors again. I became as politically aware as I have ever been, and am not anymore, very left oriented, complete with posters, books and buttons, and my one and only ever walk in a demonstration against the placement of nuclear weapons in our country.
A grade later my looks began to 'normalize' and in 4th grade I became part of a group of friends who were cool but unassuming, not stuck up like the 'popular' group. I went out more, I drank more (I never smoked anything though, well 2 leetle drafts from a regular cigarette when I was drunk once, but never again since then), I skipped classes a whole of a lot more and I flunked 5th grade because of that. I barely managed to graduate in 6th grade with the very minimum of grades required, 2 subjects I actually flunked but my 9 for English (we got grades from 1 - 10, 10 being the best) gave me the extra credit I needed to get my diploma.
My taste in music was influenced by my friends, one of the groups I was part of in my sort of punky/lefty/hippy-ish days were into the Culture Club and U2 and such, so I liked them as well, or so I said. I still prefer ABBA over them any day. The tapes I still have from the 80's contain everything. I basically love almost all 80's music. Oh and lastly, I have been in love with my one and only soulmate 3 times during highschool. Three different girls, but each time I was sure that that was my true love. Heh heh. I also had many crushes on the side.
Well that turned out a lot longer than it sounded in my head, but then again, 8 years is a long time.
