Re: 80's Music

I think it's kinda cool that there's crossing over in threads. I read somewhere that people are now hanging out cross-generationally more than they ever have. So these generations mean less and less. I think the article I read cited the internet for this phenomenon. Anyway, there is argument about who generation x is anyway, some liste conservative 1965-75, others cite 1961-81. Useless numbers for ya, but I think gen x-ers should definitely remember the eighties that's my version of things.

Well, speaking of crossing-over (or at least, overlap): the Baby Boom Generation (aka "Boomers") is usually reckoned as 1946-64. At the same time, Douglas Coupland, the guy who wrote Generation X (that is, he invented the concept) was born, IIRC, in 1960. Ergo, Yours Truly, born in 1962, is happy to claim membership in both.

GG I have the memories of a Boomer, and the poverty of an Xer . . . a Yer . . . a Zer. Oh hell, is there a Generation Broke? :rolleyes Out

I saw Prince in his Purple Rain tour (1985), so I think that cover my 80's Music bonafides! :p

ETA: I took the test, but "only" came up w/ 67.3. That sucker stunk! It frickin' marked me wrong for "Jesse's" girl (and "dance" instead of "danced"---give me a break! :mad )

Where is this music test I keep hearing so much about? The 80s was an excellent music time for me but, I gotta say, the 70s (and late 60s) cranked out some goodies like Rush, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Aerosmith, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, et. al. We SO can't forget the 70s (even though it was an era that makes the fashionistas cringe in abject horror and the architecture looked like came straight outta Logan's Run (anyone remember THAT show?!))

I'm a late 60's baby....is there a Gen name for us?

Well, I'm 31, so I suppose that makes me eligible for this thread. Though, honestly, I think there should be a thread for "people that don't act their age", and I'd be right at home there!

Mental age

Postby 3peanuts » Wed May 26, 2004 2:37 pm

I'm 26, so I kind of guess I fit in this thread.

I was looking for a thread in which the standard was "people who were born in the late 70's, and remember disco music from elder brothers/sisters, who spent their childhood during the 80's and remember Cherry Merry Muffin and still have a soft spot for Care Bears, who were teenagers during the 90's and sang sad and angsty songs and wore horrible shirts on Nirvana t-shirts. I guess this is the thread I was looking for.

It was mind blowing when, chatting with younger dykes, I got to know something very surprising: they don't know "Four Non Blondes" music, they have sex earlier, they consider Madonna a sex role model (well, in a sort of way).

So I got to a conclusion: Madonna and more sexual freedom is what we are leaving to them as a legacy of our angsty years as teens (well, angst was the main feature of little me), moreover I discovered Madonna and sex are related.

I hate to say I belong to anything, but this thread certainly applies to something. I'm a 34 year old teen with the occassional 80s flashbacks. I remember those years...a swirling maze of cotton candy pastels, new wave punk, flock of seagulls, go-gos, frankie goes crazy in hollywood, just relax, don't do it, do you wanna touch me ferris bueller, molly ringwald's perky breasts, bad sci-fi, madness, leg warmers, st elsewhere, big shoulder pads, big hair, martha quinn, V (yes, you remember V, you worship V, V was the shiznit), omigoddebbiegibson, haircut 100 (love plus one baby), val speak (like, omigod, that is like totaly, like bitchin and stuff, like gag me with a spoon, gross me out totally!), square pegs, jolt cola, steven speilberg ruled the box office, andrew lloyd webber ruled broadway, hart to hart, SNL sucked really really bad, madge was like a virgin, so was MTV, Don Imus was host on VH1, let's get Physical....etc. etc. etc.

Oh yes, I remember. :wtf

Kind of like an 80's thread, only bigger and better.

OK, I had no clue what a PeeChee was but I remember Garbage Pail kids (fighting over the cards!)

We still have a skating rink here. I thought everyone did...

I so remember Cherry Merry Muffin, Rainbow Bright, and just the other day I had to explain to some poor soul who She-Ra is. Apparently she’d never heard of She-Ra OR HeMan! The atrocity. And yes, my CareBear is in a bag in my closet in my room at my parents house. If I ever get a real house of my own, it’ll be there.

I grew up on Lik-M-Aid, I'm 31, not exactly a lesbian, but I'd sure like a girlfriend who's one. ;)

Sadly, I no longer remember my preference of Fun-Dip flavours, but I did have one. I think it came in a few different varieties. The stuff they make now is just not the same! I also lived Gold-Mine gum. And my first love was Candy Necklaces. So lame that I felt really girlie when I wore mine!

Is there a hyphen in anal-retentive?

My first celebrity crush has been Nastassja Kinskij in "Cat People", I've always been pretty perverted for a teenager. Next came Twin Peaks girls: all of them. I've never been able to pick one.

And I had a crush for Cherry Merry Muffin when I was a baby, but I guess I've already aknowledged you with this time ago.

Let's think about Storm, in her Punk Claremont period. Good 80's: those were X-Gals...and those were Marvel Comics!

I spent Literature classes imagining Storm crashing the windows of my classroom and bringing me upon a cloud with a powerful wind, where, obviously she made love to me surrounded by a warm breeze.

Geek-infested roots: how many of us remember their first sexual fantasy to be an X-Girl? Sigh...:flirt

She-Ra, Red Sonja, Firestar *sigh* yes I remember them as well. I look back on it now and say to myself "Self, how come it took so long to realize girls rock!"

And Mollyig, this can qualify as the thread where nobody acts their age. I will make it so!

Twisted Minstrel you forgot jelly bracelets, Tiffany, Keds, Guess Jeans just to bring back more memories. V ah yes, I remember that as well.
