I have to admit that what kept going through my mind was what EasierSaid posted. Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me no more. And now it's Love, it is a flower...

But in a somewhat more serious vein, I'm also intrigued by the biochemical discussion. It was my understanding that in the first rush of crush/love that there are many chemicals that rush all around in the brain but they subside eventually and then you are left with...what? Either an abiding love (which brain-wise might translate to positive-association pathways having been forged while all the oxytocin was flitting around), or you realize you were never in love, just crush.

(I used to be a scientist back in the '90's, but a microbiologist - and I don't think bacteria fall in love, so I never had much cause to know about things like that.)

What is love, anyway? I guess I think it's a lot of things - it's how you feel about someone and what you want for them and in regard to them - you want good things for them, even if it's at your own expense, you want to be with them a lot, etc. - but I think it's also about how you behave toward the person you're in love with, or whom you love. If you want good things for them even at your own expense or inconvenience, then you actually do the thing, you don't just think about it. So it's both an emotion and an action.

I would even go further to say that one without the other doesn't cut it.

Well, lemme start w/ a classic:

1: If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

2: And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3: If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4: Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful;

5: it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;

6: it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right.

7: Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8: Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

9: For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect;

10: but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away.

11: When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

12: For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood.

13: So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

That's I Corinthians 13 from the Bible.

But here's another bit of verse that I, well, love:

Hard Love

(Bob Franke)

I remember growing up like it was only yesterday
Mom & Daddy tried their best to guide me on my way
But the hard times & the liquor drove the easy love away
And the only love I knew about was hard love

It was hard love, every hour of the day
When Christmas to my birthday was a million years away
And the fear that came between them drove the tears into my play
There was love in daddy's house, but it was hard love

-----

And I recall the gentle courtesy you showed me as I tried
To dissemble in politeness all the love I felt inside
And for every song of laughter was another song that cried
This ain't no easy weekend, this is hard love

It was hard love, every step of the way
Hard to be so close to you, so hard to turn away
And when all the stars and sentimental songs dissolved to day
There was nothing left to sing about but hard love

-----

So I love you for your courage, and your gentle sense of shame
And I love you for your laughter and your language and your name
And I knew it was impossible, but I loved you just the same
Though' the only love I gave to you was hard love

It was hard love, it was hard on you, I know
When the only love I gave to you was love I couldn't show
You forgave the heart that loved you as your lover turned to go
Leaving nothing but the memory of hard love

-----

So I'm standing in this phone booth with a dollar and a dime
Wondering what to say to you to ease your troubled mind
For the Lord's cross might redeem us, but our own just wastes our time
And to tell the two apart is always hard, love

So I'll tell you that I love you even though I'm far away
And I'll tell you how you change me as I live from day to day
How you help me to accept myself and I won't forget to say
Love is never wasted, even when it's hard love

Yes, it's hard love, but it's love all the same
Not the stuff of fantasy, but more than just a game
And the only kind of miracle that's worthy of the name
For the love that heals our lives is mostly hard love

I think the board could use a little light heartedness after the horror of the last few days. :)

Working with children I often find they come up with the funniest things, their opinions of the world are so unique that are bound to bring a smile to your face. I found these and thought I would share. Take care.

Children's opinions on love:

"No one is sure why it happens, but I heard it has something to do with how you smell. That's why perfume and deodorant are so popular." -- Mae, age 9

"On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date." -- Mike, 10

"I'm in favor of love as long as it doesn't happen when Dinosaurs is on television." -- Jill, age 6

"One of you should know how to write a check. Because, even if you have tons of love, there is still going to be a lot of bills." -- Ava, age 8

"I'm not rushing into being in love. I'm finding fourth grade hard enough." -- Regina, age 10

"Love will find you, even if you are trying to hide from it. I been trying to hide from it since I was five, but the girls keep finding me." -- Dave, age 8

Good Advice About Love:

"Spend most of your time loving instead of going to work." -- Dick, age 7

"Be a good kisser. It might make your wife forget that you never take out the trash." -- Erin, age 8

Titles of Love Ballads You Can Sing To Your Loved One:

"'How Do I Love Thee When You're Always Picking Your Nose?'" -- Arnold, age 10

"'I Am In Love With You Most of the Time, But Don't Bother Me When I'm With My Friends.'" -- Bob, age 9
“....and that is why you don't run.”

"Who gets the toaster for that one?"

Well i might as well put somthing on here cause i kinda started it. I dont think that i can give you any thing you havent heard before. but my thoughts are that love is rare at best if you find it hang on to it because chances are you will never find it again. maby its just somthing people hold on to the idea of love so that they can bleave that there is some good in the world. or maby it is much much more than we can perceave. all i know is i do really hope its out there other wise i have got nothing to look foward to. this post will probely make some of you sad or make you think but hey dont worry this is just how my thoughs go it kinda sucks. :happy

Love is, at least for me, a tid bit insane.

you know that song from Dover? "love is a bitch"! I don't know, they are kinda right, love hurts very very very MUCH! but what else could cause your heart to race and your soul to pour into another person? love means altruism, trusting, magic and chemestry mixed and hidden in a warm caress. did you know that kissage comes from the instinct to feed someone you care for? I read it in a sociology book. really interesting.

I like what everyone has written. I agree with Kivrin that love can hurt. It can also make yopu feel complete. I am fortunate to have found someone I love for the second time in life. I thought I would never find it again but now I have it. If you really love someone you cant imagine sex with them. Because there is a difference between sex and making love. sex is pleasure but when you make love to someone you care for its not just because it feels good its out of a need to be closer to them. When all you want is to hold them close and your need to "Sleep" with them is a desire to be closer to them.

Love is waking up and logging in today on what was to be one of the most dreadful days for me and seeing that I have touched so many people enough to change thier signatures just for me for just one day to make me smile.

Like a few others, on reading the title of this thread, I was immediately reminded of a song - being a child of the 80s, this was the first thing I thought of:

What Is Love? - Howard Jones

I love you whether or not you love me
I love you even if you think that I don't
Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you, but I don't mind
Why should I mind, why should I mind?

What is love anyway?
Does anybody love anybody anyway?

Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear?
Never worry? Never be sad?
The answer is they cannot love this much - nobody can
This is why I don't mind you doubting

And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be
The door always must be left unlocked
To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you
And not to spend the time just doubting

For me, love (in it's many splendiferous forms) comes down to a few basic principles: respect, trust, affection, consideration, and balance.

:peace
