I am a very private person. So, you can probably image that it is a big deal for me to post a picture of my son here. I wanted to post it to answer the question, "How have Willow and Tara positively affected your life?" Well, my son is the answer.

In September 2004, I was single. I started writing Neverland in a bid to try to experience—even vicariously—the kind of love that Willow and Tara feel for each other on Pens. Over the course of several months I became friends with one of the people reading the story, an author in her own right who I admired very much. We fell in love, and in 2008 we were married. Not long after that, we had the most beautiful baby in all of the known universe. (Not biased.) My wife and I are sure we would have met if it were not for the Kitten board... but, we did meet on the Kitten board. And our son is a direct result of both of us wanting to experience a love like Willow and Tara's. I am a lucky, lucky Kitten.

Postby vampyregurl73 » Thu Dec 16, 2010 8:02 pm

Hmmm, write an essay... haven't done that in eons... I sit here thinking an tapping my nails against my keyboard as I try to organize my thoughts.

My options: a. How have Willow and Tara positively affected your life? or
b. What does being a kitten mean to you?

Again, more thinking and tapping.

Until March of this year I had no idea what "fan fiction" even was. I had no idea that there were entire communities and websites devoted strictly to these two characters, much less the fervor and intensity of debate about what had been done with them.

I mean, c'mon it's just a t.v. show, right?

Hardly.

Yes, I knew and had watched some of Buffy The Vampire Slayer when it was airing, but it had not been anything I did regularly. I had no idea that one of the characters had gone on to come out and have the longest running positively portrayed homosexual relationship on television either.

One of my cable stations had started running marathons of the show but none of the episodes were in sequence, much to my chagrin. I work from home and keep odd hours, so often it was the only thing on from 1am -5am. I got sucked into the show, and due to its erratic sequencing broke down and bought the box set. Too much was out of context for me, one minutes there's a vampire that's good then he's killing people, then there's witch trying to destroy the word, then she's a gay vampire, then the main character is dead and there's a librarian that keep getting hit in the head... you get the picture.

What I found was a very well written, pop culture reference laden, funny show, but within that show inspite of all the other turmoil, there is this incredibly sweet romance between two young women.

So of course it has to be shot all to hell.

I was as enraged as the next fan (because by this time I had become one), and went poking around on the internet. I am still in awe of the sheer amount of stories, sites, art and whatnot dedicated just to Willow and Tara. You expect a certain amount for a show that has cult status, but for two characters that aren't even the main characters? Wow.

So by now you may be wondering what my point is in all this rambling. Well, it's two fold. Willow and Tara not only feed the romantic in me, which is good in my book, but to look at the time frame of the show and realize there was absolutely nothing like it aimed at that particular demographic and the kind of message it sent. That gives me hope. It gives my 16 year old son hope, that even if it's slowly, shows like this were and are being watched by people who will stand up to change how homosexuality is viewed and accepted, just like him - and that last bit are his words.

Yes, it fell into the cliché, but the relationship itself was positive. The love was real, and felt by so many people. So much so, that there is a whole new generation of young people watching, that get the message that it is ok to be who you are, to love who you love - because love is love.

This is how Willow and Tara have positively influence my life, they've helped to take out some of the cynicism and thickskinnedness I have developed. This is a good thing.

Here is fold two. In the course of all of this I found the kittenboard. I lurked here for a while, and began reading the stories. Not just here, but in multiple places. Some are really quite good, some made me groan, some even made me blush, but I kept coming back here. I registered and began floating around in the chat a bit, something I'm not horribly big on, but decided what they hell, right? I'm curious and they only to find out more is to start talking to people.

I also started leaving feedback - this was awesome! Some of the authors actually like thoughtful and detailed feedback, which in my case with a few of them led to really great discussions about everything from their process, to the themes and subtext of the stories.

I found a really wonderful group of intelligent, creative, thoughtful, yes, even insightful people here. Men, women, straight, gay - didn't matter - all across the globe. During this, I got the bright idea that "hey, I could do this, I could write a story, and it might even be good". I found friendly people, that offer great amounts of encouragement, especially when you haven't got a clue where to start, but the inspiration is there, and your muse is dancing away right in front of you.

That was seven months ago, and six since I started posting my first attempt at a story. I have done something unexpected. I have made friends, I have started writing again - with lots of encouragement (so very important). The interplay between everyone is so positive on this site. I don't think I have yet to read feedback that is nasty, and that's something that can't be said elsewhere.

Being a kitten (I have to grin as I write that), is an anomaly, but in such a good way. A large group of people brought together by their love of two characters, and in some cases their hate of the writers that bumped one of them off, to make something wonderful. It doesn't matter who your are, what you do, if you write or not. You're accepted and welcomed no questions asked. You're one of the gang because you made it here. That's why the board is still around and going strong, in my humble opinion. Our common interest, being a kitten is having fun, lending an ear or whatever. But it's always fun, always being accepted and accepting in return. I understand why there are so many young members. We don't ask questions, we don't impose rigid expectations. Just come in and be who you are, and we'll be who we are.

So I'm not even sure if I've gotten this in before the deadline, I'm not even sure it actually fits the guidelines. I just thought I would put it out there none the less.

Re: 10th ANNIVERSARY KITTEN GIVEAWAY CONTEST #2

Postby CrazyTaraWitch » Thu Dec 16, 2010 9:44 pm

Here's another rambling essay from my crazy mind, this time about the ways Willow and Tara have changed my life for the better.

I don't remember a specific moment when I realized I was gay. What I do remember is the picture I hid in a drawer in my room of Tara laying on she and Willow's bed in Once More With Feeling, wearing that gorgeous dress with tops of her even more gorgeous breasts showing. I remember pulling out that picture everyday for weeks and just staring and staring at it, amazed at how beautiful a woman could be, and amazed at the way it could make my 13-year-old insides twist in pleasure and longing to look upon that beauty. When I think of discovering my sexuality, that is the first and best memory that springs to mind.
I have never come out to my grandmother, I have always been scared of her reaction because she has been the only person in my life that I don't believe would choose to accept it and accept me. Despite that fact, when my grandmother came to visit and stay with us 5 years ago and sleep in my room, with me only 15 at the time, I refused to take down the pictures of Willow and Tara that covered the vast majority of my walls. I was scared of my Gram learning I was gay, but I refused to take down the pictures that made my room feel like home, the pictures that made me believe in love and hope.
I remember the day I started loving Amber as more than just Tara Maclay. I was reading one of my all-time favourite books, Sunshine by Robin McKinley, and for whatever reason turned it over and started reading the reviews on the back cover. I found myself laughing from one particularly review which has forever stayed in my mind: "I never knew blood and chocolate could go together so well." My delight was magnified a thousand times over when I saw the name following this review: Amber Benson. Until that moment she had only ever been Tara in my head, but as soon as I read her name on the back of that book I ran to my computer and spent hours researching her. There will never be anything I love her for more than for playing Tara, but she is incredibly amazing even aside from that, and over the last 5 years since that day they have in many ways become like one person in my mind, despite the many many differences between them. Two months ago, thanks to Amber Benson I had the best day I'd had in a long time. After 6 hellish months, I met my hero, at BuffyFest no less, and for a few hours I was actually happy. That weekend I got two hugs, a nickname (even if one I had to share with my roommates), and four free signatures from Amber Benson and got to actually talk to her a little, and stare at her a lot. Amber Benson, who will always be Tara Maclay in my heart, gave me some genuine happiness. What better way is there to positively change someone's life?
Willow and Tara have meant all of this to me, but it's more than that too. They've given me hope. Nearly every relationship I have ever seen has failed, either through divorce or enduring misery. My mom's parents split up before I was born, my dad's parents hated eachother from the time they got married until my grandfather died, my parents split up when I was 12 and had been unhappy before that for as long as I could remember, one of my uncles left his wife when I was 15, my aunt left her husband when I was 17, my other uncle's wife left him when I was 18, by the time I finished high school nearly all of my friends' parents had divorced, my uncle's wife left him when I was 19, my grandfather left my stepgrandmother when I was 20, and I've had my own heart shattered twice, once by a woman who promised me forever. All I've seen of love and marriage all my life is failure, yet I believe in love more than anything, because of Willow and Tara. They had their troubles but they always found their way back to each other, they loved each other from so deep inside themselves it was impossible to watch them together without believing they were meant to be, and for me it was hard at times to remember they weren't real, because their love seemed to leap off the screen every time they were together.
Every time I get sad, I turn to my favorite Willow and Tara fanfics. Reading about their love and seeing them find their happily-ever-afters gives me comfort and joy. The many different ways the brilliant kittens find to put them together help me to feel like destiny always puts things right, brings together those that are meant to belong to each other; no matter what lives Willow and Tara lead, here they always find eachother, so some day, somehow, I'll find my other half too, no matter where life takes me.
Willow and Tara teach me to believe.
"To days to come."
"All my love to long ago.

I hope, we'll have more happy ever after
I hope, we can all live more fearlessly...

Absolutely broken.... but in a very wonderful way! Everyone in both challenges should be very proud of themselves. Such creativity and honesty. "Thank you" doesn't remotely begin to cover it, but it's the best I've got, so sincerely Thank You to everyone. Happy Holidays everyone!
