Gay Weddings

Postby Rally » Wed Sep 04, 2002 1:18 am

I have caught as much as I can, it's been pretty interesting, but not interesting enough to keep me sitting there for an hour every night. At least not this week, too many other things going on.

There are two lesbian couples, two gay couples, they are all having their ups and downs. Not sure what else to say about it.

------------

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

Salon have an interview with Neil LaBute about this film. I have no idea if he mentions the lesbian cliche or not, since I haven't had a chance to read it all the way through as yet, but my guess would be not. Time for another round of letter writing, maybe?

Thanks so much for answering my question, Rally :) I can live with comic relief, as long as it's done respectfully and it adds a valid aspect to the series. It's different when they become the laughing stock of the show. Pity if the men frown upon them. I mean they're all in this together... sorta... Humans... ;)

Re: Gay Weddings

Postby Gatito Grande » Sat Sep 07, 2002 1:21 pm

I really enjoyed Gay Weddings. I think the producers teased the audience w/ an implied "Are they all gonna make it to the 'altar'?" tone, but it did make that much more rewarding that they did. In hindsight, it showed just how normal they were: same pre-wedding jitters as hets.

The only thing that really bothered me was the emphasis on conspicuous consumption. This was particularly true in contrasting the one couple of color, Sonja and Lupe w/ the other three. S and L's wedding was shown first (the third night; the other three were on the final night)---IMO suggesting, "this is less interesting because it's in their friends' backyard, w/o a ton of $ being spent." (especially Dan and Gregg's---literally!---"Merv Griffin Productions.")

Having said all this, I loved all four weddings in their different styles (and the conspicuous consumption problem is certainly something characteristic of het weddings as well).

All four weddings were very moving. In some ways, the one that moved me most was the one that was seemingly most dubious: Harley and Scott, who bitched at each other (and the cameras!) right on up to the I-do's. The thing that moved me was Scott's parents. Roman Catholics from New England (Scott was an ex-semenarian!), they were clearly gritting their teeth the whole time, yet at the end, they really seemed to get that this was about love: love is love is love . . . :heart

GG Though the :thud -moment of the series was Dale and Eve slow-dancing in their white dresses after the guests had gone. Could provoke romantic from the most cynical . . . :love Out

This looks like being a quality drama. The corsets are just a lovely, lovely bonus.

And if anyone has not had the pleasure of seeing the lovely Keeley Hawes in action and can't wait until Tipping the Velvet she's on ITV1 tonight at 9pm in A is for Acid.

The Wire

Postby BBOvenGuy » Mon Sep 09, 2002 2:20 pm

I'm pleased to report that the HBO series The Wire came to an end last night without any lesbians dying or turning evil.

As you may recall, Detective Kima Greggs had been shot a few episodes back, and initially it looked like she was dead. But in last night's finale, she was alive and well on her way to recovery, and her girlfriend wasn't evil at all. They were having an argument because the girlfriend didn't want Kima going back to police work, but I'm sure they can sort that out. Can you imagine the conversation?

Kima: I've got to go back. I love being a cop.

Girlfriend: Honey, you know how dangerous that is. Since you're a lesbian, you've practically got a big target stuck to your back.

Kima: But I survived this time!

Girlfriend: This time, yes, but what about next time? And what happens to me after that? If you die, you know I'll just have to turn evil. Those big veins are going to look terrible on me.

Kima: Sweetie, I'll make you a deal. I'll get a restraining order the prevents Joss Whedon from coming into town. Will you let me go back to work then?

Girlfriend: Well, I'll think about it...

Oh, and the gay character Omar survived, too. They killed off his boyfriend, but he didn't turn evil as a result. Of course, he wasn't exactly good to begin with, so perhaps it's more accurate to say he didn't turn any more evil. He was simply back to his usual routine of robbing the local drug dealers.

Sex and the City

Postby Rally » Mon Sep 09, 2002 2:32 pm

Well Sex and the City ended it's season as well last night with the one gay couple remaining in tact, abliet they are not having sex. Also Nathan Lane made a guest appearance as a gay guy who decided to get married to a straight woman. So I guess he dodged a bullet there so to speak.

I was quite relieved to see Kima awake and using a walker.

I liked it when McNultey was talking to her in the hospital - trying to deal with his guilt and he told her "it's always the black cop that goes under cover ...."

I don't know how intentional it was but Simmons really nailed both society and the media with that line.

Uch, depressing news indeed... :( I noticed a lesbian in a movie a couple of days ago. It was a very tiny part: just a few scenes and lines, but you take what you can get. The film was called "She's the one" (dunno if it's a known one, but Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston were in it). Anyway, there's this sweet blonde girl, who works in a bar, named Connie, obviously in love with another brown-haired girl (damn, I forgot her name). Guy falls for girl, needless to say Connie isn't happy: did you have to marry him, bla, bla, she thinks he's probably just another jerk like the others before him. There's this moment at the bar where the guy walks in for the first time, and Connie starts talking: how he managed to break her heart already, don't break (other) girl's heart. Guy confused. To make a long story short: guy and girl have a bit of an argument (guy didn't wanna go to Paris on their honeymoon), but they get back together in the end. Connie proves to be a good friend coz she told her friend the message of the guy, namely that he misses her, etc. That's about it: not that much to tell: so the lesbian has integrity (k, at least she's not evil), but she's still alone /sigh/ Damn, there must be a more fun thread out here... ;) /think happy thoughts: Oeh, mum let me order the American Pie 2 DVD through our book club. Woo and hoo ! Go mum ! :)

Phew... (-> sigh of relief) Thanks, sweetie ;) And no, you're not slow at all: if all goes well, I'll finally get my university degree, in 6 years instead of 4.

Or even better (yet): I didn't get what you were talking about at first, till I realized you were probably mentioning the Buffy reruns on BBC2. I watch some eps occasionally, but I've seen 'm all in the past, and must have 'm on tape somewhere (with or without the right labels, titles). Just saw ep 3: Afterlife of season sux on ka2 (Belgian kanaal 2 -> channel 2) this tuesday. It's kinda cool coz I want to try and make my first W/T music video's (after my Xena ones) but I've already downloaded all the eps from the net, and I'm not really interested in seeing everything again, if you know what I mean I'm in it solely for the W/T-scenes now: get those babies on tape and make some sweet video's, block out all the rest.

I was reading this slash fic a while ago and came across a reference to Mellisa Erthridge. Since I didn't know who she was I just waved it, but since then I've seen references to her in at least a dozen different fics! Who is she? Is she gay? Is she a famous homophobe? help!!

Re: Other Lesbians in the Media

Postby The Big I T » Sun Sep 22, 2002 5:38 pm

Thought I’d transcribe another piece about Lifetime’s upcoming This Much I Know, which just wrapped, about a week or two ago, in Vancouver. This interview is with Leslie Hope who has one of the lead roles in the movie, and is from Lynne McNamara’s “The Backlot” column in this weekend’s Vancouver Sun. I think -- if I recall correctly from a post I made about this film a couple of weeks ago -- that this movie is scheduled to air in February of next year.

Article below:

----------------------

Leslie Hope has had quite a year.

Just a few months ago, the Nova Scotia-born actress with the close-cropped red curls was flying high, playing Kiefer Sutherland’s wife, Teri, on the popular and critically acclaimed Fox action thriller series, 24. Then her pregnant character was shot to death on the show/s season finale. End of job.

What to do? How about a juicy role in a TV movie?

Hope stars in Lee Rose’s Lifetime drama This Much I Know, playing a deeply dissatisfied woman approaching her 40th birthday, stuck in an empty marriage. She takes on a job and falls in love with her boss, who just happens to be a woman.

I met up with Hope at a jewellery store entranceway next to the Cheshire Cheese Inn at 41st and Arbutus, where they’re shooting a bar scene with cast members, Wendy Crewson, Brent Spiner, Margo Martindale, and Dee Jay Jackson.

Hope says the movie’s subject matter – a woman falling for a woman – didn’t shock her and that she was surprised to find that others may be offended by the material.

“Lee had to convince me that it was as shocking as she thinks perhaps the public is going to perceive it,” says the actress. “In my own world I didn’t find it to be so shocking…I live in Los Angeles and I didn’t grow up with those kind of prejudices, and I certainly hope I don’t carry them now. So for me, that was the hardest work, really grabbing on to the fact that this would be a huge step for a person to take – a major rift in her community, that her friends would actually leave her, that her mother would threaten to disown her.”

Aware that the movie may cause a backlash from the religious right, Hope says her love scenes with Crewson are “All in a day’s work, I think. You could do worse than to be lying naked with Wendy Crewson,” she jokes. “There’s probably more than a few Canadian actors who are grinding their molars into dust thinking I got her, they didn’t.”

“I think the story’s being told so truthfully, without shock for its own sake. It’s simply the story of a woman who falls in love and meets the perfect person who just happens to be a woman.”

The decision to take on the role was simple for Hope.

Just a month earlier, in London doing press for 24 (which has now begun airing in the U.K.), she was in a cab on her way to BBC Choice’s Liquid News with fellow cast member Dennis Haysbert when she was handed a package with a script and a note from Rose.

Hope had heard about the prolific Hollywood writer/director, who often tackles homosexual issues from Sutherland, who became one of her “nearest and dearest” friends during the course of shooting the series.

“The note said, “I went out last weekend with Kiefer Sutherland and got a tattoo. Life is too short not to have fun. Do you want to do my movie?’ I read the note out loud and said, ‘Well, I’m just doin’ this movie, aren’t I?’ And I told her I didn’t have to read the script, I was in.”

“I’ve had the most extraordinary year of my life, professionally,” she says. “I had such a good time on that [24] show. I became good friends with Kiefer. Plus, as an actor, I was challenged in ways that I haven‘t been ever, really. I’ve had opportunities, but they were more sort of more compact, not something I could track through an entire season.”

Did she know from the beginning of the show that she’d be toast?

“Nope…I was actually quite confident near the end of the show, ‘cause I thought, ‘Well they can’t kill the pregnant lady and they certainly can’t shoot her in the guts.’ Wrong.”

“Having said that, I think they made the right decision. I think the ending was fantastic, I think Kiefer carried it beautifully, and, not to make too much of it, but I think it gives the show a tragic feeling and to do otherwise, I think, would have dumbed it down a little bit.”

--------------------

There’re another couple of paragraphs, but they’re mostly about how crazy Hope is about Kiefer Sutherland, 24’s numerous Emmy nominations, and how she plans on attending tonight’s awards ceremonies.

Also, I think I saw something else in a recent McNamara column that said something about another project for Lifetime that Rose will soon be returning to Vancouver to begin shooting in a couple of weeks. If I can find it, I'll post it as well.

Tipping the Velvet website

Postby tyche » Wed Sep 25, 2002 1:47 pm

In a fit of good timing ('Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters having just been nominated for the Booker prize), the BBC have put up their website for 'Tipping the Velvet'. (According to their drama newsletter, this was due to overwhelming demand, which just goes to show that there's a big market for lesbians in corsets.) ;)

The site has an article about the history of gay and lesbian characters on TV (which I've already posted about in the lesbian cliche thread), video clips, screensavers, photos and interviews with the actors. Check it out at the URL below:

www.bbc.co.uk/drama/tipping/

Happy viewing! :)

And someone MUST tape Tipping the Velvet for me. April gave me that book to read on my way home after the first Kitten gathering and I've been obsessed with Sarah Waters books since!

PLLLLLEASEEEEEEEE. I wonder if they'll show it on BBCAmerica?!?!

Forgot to add, I've tried for years to find a copy in the US of A Village Affair to no luck. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I can get a copy? View it? Something!
