Lesson of the day: find out what you're afraid of and go live there.

Today I made myself go to a house party where the only person I knew there was the host. Scared the crap out of me, but....totally paid off. Made some new friends and even met a very cute girl.

2nd lesson of the day: do not assume that the cute femme girl is straight. You will almost certainly miss an opportunity.

Kelly Clarkson just announced the dates for her Stronger Tour 2012 and I'm super excited because one of the dates is in the city I live in. I usually have to travel the 45minutes it takes to get to Chicago, IL for her concerts. Now I will only have to travel the 7minutes it takes to get to The Venue now.

Woo and hoo! My team won bar trivia tonight! :eatme This doesn't happen very often (there's one time that wins almost every single time....), so it felt good to get up and cheer and shout and whoop and holler (and, ahem, rub it in that one team's face). :blush

I went to a meetup of my Doctor Who fan group last night and had a lot of fun. It's hard to make myself socialize, but sometimes it pays off. I didn't form any strong friendships or anything, but I met some nice people (and saw I couple I already knew), had some great conversation about the show, had a good conversation with one guy about Buffy and Firefly, and got a lead on a local Joss Whedon fan club I may be able to join. It was a nice way to spend an evening, and though it may be silly I'm proud of myself for going and actually interacting, even if only on an impersonal level.

A happy feeling for me? Its Thanksgiving. I've got memories floating around in my head. Mom bustling around the kitchen, a smile on her face. Teaching me how to cook when I was younger. Mom holding me up so I can see the stove, handing me the spoon for the first time....

Ummm, happy thoughts here too! We always went to my grandparents house for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner...and I loved it! My grandmother would pull out the "good linen" and the "fine china." They practically wrapped us in bubble wrap so that we didn't break something, lol. Plus, we got to drink our iced tea out of wine glasses- booya! :grin After eating, we would usually watch football for a bit and then go out and play football. Later on, as a teenager, I would hook up with my friends and go see a movie.

I've tried to continue a lot of those traditions, except my kid is so not into sports, so we just hang out and play board games after dinner. Still lot's of fun:) This year its just the three of us; our first Thanksgiving w/o other family around in 12 years and I'm so ok with it! Low key and quiet:)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

Today I finished my final written exams for my apprenticeship. Not sure I did too good, but we'll see in January. :)

Also, last week I had a blast on my birthday. Got to see Evanescence (stood in the first row) and The Pretty Reckless. It was amazing. Hadn't seen Evanescence since October 2003 and Amy only got better. Blew my mind!!!!

I get to see my Dad tomorrow and we are going to a comedy show on Sunday. Next Thursday we will also go to a football match and I can't wait. It's been too long! :)

I Black Friday shopped this morning AFTER the chaos; I didn't go out until about 9am, so it wasn't too bad. Plus, I STILL got everything I wanted for the same sale prices that started at 3am:) I got a $230 comforter set for $42, pillows normally $27.99 for $3.88, a $249 1TB portable hard drive at the Apple store for $138, PLUS a whole bunch of stuff for my studio C.H.E.A.P. :grin Happy, happy days....

My crush seems to think of me as a friend, and has said she wishes we could meet. *squee* She lives in California so it's not like I can just pop over for a visit, but the fact that she even *wants* to meet me, whether it ever happens or not, makes me very happy. It's so nice to feel like I have real feelings for someone again, even if it is just online. She's awesome, and she seems to genuinely like me; the romantic part isn't that important. I'm just happy she wants to know me.

I might be getting a promotion. Not much, since I work in a coffee shop, but I'm happy about it. My manager thinks I'm doing well and I like my coworkers. Plus, I have some fantastic people in my life. They support me and are always there to cheer me up and just be there.

I don't think my evening could get much better...College football wise that is:) Baylor is winning, YAY! Florida is playing FSU and losing, BOO, but my happy feeling is that I get to watch my beloved Gators. Gotta look at the positive. Oh and UCLA is playing USC...GO BRUINS!

I just discovered that a friend of mine from Jr. High and High School recently met her boyfriend in person for the first time, after about 6 years that they've been together. I'm so happy for them!

Our show opened and wahoo, it is hilarious! An old fashioned melodrama turned on its ear. Everything from the heroine trapped by the villain in a pit full of (sock puppet) rattlesnakes to the hero swinging in on a rope and me hauling a giant pistol out of my corset. Bizarre, but the audience is yelling and laughing and having fun so it works!

Not only did I embrace my romantic and dorky self today. ( I was smiling in the post office lol :D I know it was cheesey but I just didnt care :D) I had the pleasure of watching the cold wintery sun set and being out in the open while the moon was peeking through too, plus in my local charity shop I found this big plush carebear- my niece likes the carebears alot and the soft toys and pretty much anything carebear related is hard to come by, so I take it to the till and the woman tells me when I ask her how much it is, she says 50p, a total bargain, plus helping a charity and getting a prezzie which I know will make Poppy happy is a win win for me :) Charlie doesnt need to know it came from a charity shop and it still looks brand new and has the tags on it :D win win win :)

One way or another the semester will be over in a week. Sooo ready for a few weeks without classes, and to be done with the most boring class Child Development has ever created.

Last week didn't start very well for me. I was ill and all icky. Well, last Saturday, my ex and her sister, along with my god daughter, came to pick me up to get babied over at their place. Aside from being sick, it was awesome. Kiana, my 2yr old god daughter, spent a lot of time with me, as her mom went into labor Sunday night. Over the next few days, while her mom was in the hospital and my ex was at work or at the hospital with her, Kiana and I just laid around being lazy and watching the same 4 movies over and over. On Thursday (by that time I was feeling all better) we picked up her mom and her new baby brother from the hospital and brought them home. When we got there, Kiana's mom turns to me and says, "Do you want to hold your god son?"

I just about melted into tears!!! I am now the proud god mother of two beautiful babies!! :heart :heart :heart :heart

My happy feelings thread.
My brother is a real pain sometimes and he can sometimes be such an arse but today he really came through, my mum needed this pair of shoes- she has some kind of arthiritus thing going on in her feet and there's this brand of regular but mega supportive and comfy shoes which would mean she wouldnt need the dr's orthopedic insole and yet she would not ever be able to afford them herself, they are over 100 quid which would be way beyond what my mother can pay so I e-mailed my brother and he told me he will buy them for her for christmas. Plus my brother rocks because I can talk to him about anything and everything

After a mediocre turnout last week, I tried again baking what I call "Lazy Bread" (a very simple, depression-era recipe) today. OHMYGOD. Perfect, fluffy, moist. Made one loaf of plain and one loaf whole clove garlic. Simply wonderful. I'm proud of myself, especially after my recent baking failures.

Yesterday was one of the best days of my entire life, just hanging out with my family. We decorated my parents house with Christmas lights and ornaments and garlands hanging from the lights and curtain rods and a metal bird that lives on a ceiling... In all the years my dad and stepmum have never had a Christmas tree-- though one year there was a Christmas mini-Palm-tree--, so random lights hung around the kitchen has become a tradition. This year, for the first time I had an ornament. Before it's always been just ornaments from when my sisters were growing up, and a few others of my stepmum's, cause my mum kept all the Christmas stuff when she and my dad split, but my stepmum's mum was in town for the weekend and she had made everyone ornaments including me so for the first time I have an ornament and that feels nice. My 5 month old nephew loved watching everything get hung, which was adorable, and he was in a very happy mood and I got to play and cuddle with him lots (not enough cause it never is, but it was great); he really is one of the best things in my universe. My little sister was in a good mood, and you never know what's coming with her so it was nice to see her cheerful, and she managed to have a friend over for part of the day without any stress or drama which is practically a first, and her friend's actually really nice and helped us decorate. My new brother-in-law is getting better all the time at handling our insanity, and I'm finally starting to interact with him more, which I'm really happy about cause even though we don't click he's a really good guy. We wrapped up the night with "church," meaning us sitting around singing songs that make all our hearts feel really good, which for years now has been one of the best parts of my life. My dad even sang Roly Poly to my nephew, which was my grandfather's favourite song, and I cried a little but in a really good way; I don't really believe in heaven, but it's nice to think that somehow my Pappy was there watching us. If nothing else he was there in our hearts; my dad cried to, and when the song was over my stepmum looked up and said "That one was for you Chuck." It was just... really really nice. My dad never had an easy relationship with his parents, they both did a lot of wrong by him, but my Pappy was the best grandpa a kid could hope for and he had a truly good heart, and it made me so happy that for a few minutes we remembered him and brought a little bit of him into my nephew's life.
It was just... wonderful. All of it. Only thing that could've made it better is if my brother had been there, but we at least all talked to him on the phone, so he was still a part of things. It was Christmas. Screw the actual holiday; yesterday was the best the festive season gets, nearly the best it's ever been.

Tomorrow I am doing an experiment.

One I designed, from reading papers and talking to people and doing similar but still very different things.

I wrote the protocol. I ordered the parts. And tomorrow I will do it.

The experiment will let us answer a new suite of questions that the lab couldn't answer before they had me. And I can take what I learn running this experiment and run a more complicated one after the holidays.

My whole life, I've never done this. I've never had a question, then written a protocol to run an experiment to test it. I've spent my time being handed other people's questions and other people's methods.

But this. This is so much better. I feel like my boss has placed me on the shoulder of a giant, and simply asked me to look around. When I asked for a spyglass, he bought me one.

And tomorrow I will begin to see farther.

Plus, my laptop comes Thursday, so FUCK YEAH.
