Re: Hope for the best, expect the worst

I think my problem with the Yankees is that the deep pocket gives them a stranglehold on the division, almost assured playoff appearance, and a good shot at the World Series. No, it is not a done deal, ever. Anyone can get hot or lucky. You never know. But when the Bulls had Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippin and Jackson could get Dennis Rodman to play decently you always sort of knew it was a temporary thing. It would pass and it was sort of cool to see just how long they could keep pulling it out based on talent and willpower. I don't get that same sense with the Yankees. It seems more like a cold formula: Spend big $, get to playoffs, maybe win World Series. They are a talented team, but they don't give me the same sense that the Bulls did. And that makes it hard to root for them. I don't hate the Yankees, but I will revel in their loss, if it occurs.

On the other hand, Roger Clemens is a great pitcher and he deserves to go out on a better outing than the last one against Boston. I would at least like to see him throw one more dominating game where he shuts the other team down and strikes out 9-11. That would be fitting for one of the best pitchers since Nolan Ryan.

Yes, baseball is a business. If Bill Gates wanted to, he could buy any professional team he wanted. I'm sure that he'd pay the salaries to attempt to get the best of the best. All teams are owned by very wealthy individuals or corporations. The Walt Disney Corporation owns the Angels and the Ducks. Both teams made it to their respective Championship Series. Now, did they buy their way in? No, they had players play their hearts out and have the talet to make it there.

Next time you watch a Yankee game, take a look in Memorial Park at some of the greatest names in baseball. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gerhig, Roger Maris and Yogi Berra. All these men wore the Pinstripes prior to the George Steinbrenner ownership. In my opinion, these men made baseball. I also think that Thurman Munson was one of the greatest catchers of all time. It was truly a sad day when his plane crashed. He was and will remain my favorite Yankee.

Enough rambling. I just thought I'd state my opinion. If there is one thing that people in the NY metropolitan area are proud of and very protective of, its our baseball teams.

Good luck to both teams.

ETA: I've done some research and there are 8 teams that have players making more then any Yankee player including Boston and the Cubs. Also, out of the 26 World Championship titles, only 10 have been won since George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973.

The New York Yankees are arguably the most renowned franchise in sports history and there’s no disputing that they have a rich and storied tradition. I admit that I respect and even (grudgingly) admire them; yet there’s something about them that’s hard to embrace. Maybe it’s because of their cold, relentless efficiency or because of George Steinbrenner who’s about as likeable as Old Man Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life. Whatever…it just seems like rooting for the Yankees is kind of like rooting for Chase Manhattan Bank. Even though I’m not enamored with the Marlins I’ll be supporting them to upset the Yankee machine. Go Fish!

I made a prediction to a friend of mine that was Marlins in 6 as long as the Yankee's pitching wasn't on fire. Right now it looks like I might even be right, shock and amazement. Which means I need to apologize to Marlins fans cuz there is now no way they'll win Saturday. I might take some solace in the Cubs loss of the Marlins do come through and actually win the Series. Go Fish?

Thanks a lot for jinxing the Marlins, Garner! If they lose on Saturday, I'm holding you personally responsible. GO FISH!

Bah, the marlins beat two of the best pitchers in baseball, they've been thru this and thensome this season. Quite frankly, I think we have a shot to win, and if we lose, does it matter? They've been amazing this season anyway....to me the whole year has been the world series, and the marlins have been the champs, go fish! :banana :banana :banana :banana

Something fishy was going on at Yankee Stadium tonight. The visiting team was able to celebrate winning a championship on the hallowed ground in the House that Ruth Built. Josh Beckett pitching with three days rest really showed me something as did the rest of the underdog Marlins. Congratulations Fish! Way to go! :applause

Congrats to the Fish and their fans, they truly deserved it! :applause Beckett scattered five hits and was amazing! :bow And still can't get over that slide by Gonzalez at the plate, the ball was there waiting for him....just WOW! :eek Throughout the series, the Marlins :punish the Yankees with small ball...they just did everything right! Awesome!

Ah, Rosenberg, if I had put money on my prediction, then it would have jinxed the Fish. As it is, I am at least happy that the NL won, and there is some justice that the team that beat the Cubs was the Champs. And we lasted longer than the Yankees too, so hah! Not a bad World Series, the palyoffs were more exciting, but overall, a good October for baseball, and no games in November, thank god!

Good Job Marlins!

Well Garner, you’re forgiven. I’m glad you didn’t put your money down and wind up jinxing the Fins. Maybe I’ll even send you a dollar to make up what you could have won. My brother and I were discussing the wisdom of pitching Beckett with only three days rest - I was pro and he was con. I told him that Beckett would pitch a four-hit shutout. Not too bad…I was only off by one hit. I would have been much happier with the Giants winning it all, but at least the Marlins saved us from having to see the Yankees winning another championship. Thank you, Florida!

I totally agree with you Jixer.

When I was younger my dad said I was grounded until the Cubs won the world series haha. We still joke about that. I'm a Cubs fan though.

This just goes to show everyone who "hates" the Yankees that money doesn't buy them a World Series Title. I congratulate the Fish and their fans on a great series. However, I still remain devoted to my Bronx Bombers. See ya next years guys.
