THE SOUNDS All their songs are super awesome. If you're into 80's electro rock then theyre perfect. And Maja Ivarsson, the lead, is H-O-T! HOT!

THE DISTILLERS Probably mentioned before but can't get enough of Brody. Seneca Falls and City of Angels are my faves.

so sad you have forgotten Sharleen Spiteri from Texas.... she rocks so much and she's so sexy

she's a big gay icon here in Europe

Also Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Janis Joplin, Debbie Harry, Sarah Bettens rocks so much.....;

i did like Texas a lot on their early cd's, but found their music more recently got a little too mainstreamy for my taste. I still like Sharleen though, and I'm glad to see her having some success. She played here once or twice and I got her autograph on a couple of things, she was very nice.

I also wanted to update on the status of the trial of the man accused of raping and murdering Mia Zapata of the Gits. He has been convicted and will be sentenced on April 30th at 2pm at the King County Superior Court, 4th and James. (presumably this is in Seattle, where the murder took place.) The most this- well, I can't think of a word strong enough to describe him, so feel free to insert your own - the most he can get is 35 years. Which seems inadequate somehow, so let's hope he gets that at least. If you're in the area you might want to go by and show Judge Marshall how you feel about that.

Sharleen is a big gay icon? I don't know muc of her, so i don't want to sound harsh, but i know she has a baby with her boyfriend, how is she a gay icon?

I agree with you seurat, but have you listened to their last CD? it's very good........

Just to say to AmbeRocks that some people are gay icons without being gay themselves...( she's not gay but very gayfriendly, made an appearance in Ellen, plays in gay clubs, and always says that she's proud to be loved and found sexy by girls. Here in France I can say that when they are in concert half of the crowd is gay....)

I liked the first Texas album, but like seurat thought they became a bit poppy. My gf still likes them a lot, so I got their last album for her as a present. Now that's devotion - normally I only buy her cds that I like too! ;)

Mia Zapata's rapist/killer has been sentenced to 36 years and six months, which is beyond by ten years the sentence recommended by the jury. The Judge cited the extreme violence of the crime as the reason for the longer sentence. The best result possible under the circumstances I suppose.

Has anyone heard her yet?

Well I have heard some snips from her upcomming album and for the first time in about 10-15 years I am excited about an album coming out!

Melissa Auf der Maur played with Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, but now she is on her own and she has a really cool style.

Her website is www.aufdermaur.com/ and her first solo album is out on June 1st.

Musica animam...

I have to jump on the Sheryl Crow and Tori Amos bandwagons. Such passion and awesome lyrics. True singer/songwriters are hard to find. Did anyone Mention Shirly Manson? Garbage is a good band, but her previous band Angelfish is so raw. You must listen!

I saw Mr. Airplane Man last night for the first time and decided they have to be on this list. Margaret and Tara are from Boston, they play guitar and drums respectively with Tara also playing keys on some songs - with one hand while still playing the drumset with her other hand and the footpedals. Really a fun band to see live and I can recommend all their cd's too. Their website is http://www.airplaneman.com

Oh my goddd, Amy Ray.

(the dark half of the Indigo Girls, to be rather cliche)

If you like rock and you kinda like the Indigo Girls but want more hardcore sound/lyrics, then check out her solo album:

http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/amy

It's very edgy and raw (in the best way) Inspiring lyrics include- "LucyStoners don't need boners!/Ain't no man could ever own her/With the boys she had the nerve/ to give the girls what they deserve!"

hehe. Rawk on Amy. :)

Foxglove is right - Amy Ray's solo album is brilliant. It also features other Women of Rock such as The Butchies, Josephine Wiggs of The Breeders, Kate Schellenbach of Luscious Jackson, and Joan Jett.

Let's see, there's Amber (she does MoS Club Nation kinds of stuff), Martina McBride (her voice drops me every time), Alison Krauss (naturally), Tanya Donnelly (or we could just include Kim & Kelly Deal and Kristen Hersh too and be done with it), Shelby Lynne, Utada Hikaruand the list goeth on.

I know I'm echoing other kittens with this, but I figured I'd post anyway.

Tori Amos

I'm actually listening to her right now. I have been a fan of hers since Little Earthquakes came out. I got to see her back in '99 when she toured with Alanis. It was funny. Tori was on first, and after she was done, pretty much everyone left. I felt bad for Alanis, though. Tori, though, God she is amazing. The song "Precious Things" still gives me chills everytime I hear it. The piano is just haunting. Seriously though, she is incredible.

Sarah McLachlan

Another favorite. I get to go see her in May! :dance I'm so excited. I love all of her stuff. I can't even pick which song is my favorite by her, because I love it all. "Ice" and "Good Enough" are both way up there. The plucking of the guitar in "Ice" is just so plaintive. That song gives me chills, too.

Ani Difranco

Still haven't been able to see her yet, though hopefully I'll see her this April. Her music isn't even what gets to me, it's her words...her poetry. It just builds and builds, and I haven't heard anything by her that I haven't liked.

Michelle Branch

Okay, her talent is nothing compared to the three people I've named above, but I still like the fact that she's writes her own stuff, even if it is a little immature.

I could go on, but I'm going to stop...:)

That's cool Ben. I just saw Lesbians on Ecstacy last Friday when they opened for Le Tigre. Honestly I didn't get deep into the crowd until between sets, but I got ahold of their album and it's good. I love the concept of taking "lesbian staples" and making them electronic with a new spin.

And if anybody gets the chance to see Le Tigre as they make up a bunch of canceled dates, do it. I had the time of my freaking life at that show, and now I'm kicking myself for not going to see them sooner. They are so cute I want to stuff all three of them into a pita and eat them!
