The most amazing thing happened to me tonight. I love cicadas. I love the sound of them at dusk during this part of summer. I've seen what must be thousands of those skins they shed when they molt. But I'd never seen a nymph before tonight.

As I was walking my dog, I found one moving across the sidewalk toward a tree. I stood there and watched it and it changed direction and headed for my foot. I guess because I was closer, maybe. Once it started climbing up my shoe, I figured it would be okay to borrow it for a few minutes and get me some pictures! :grin

The first eight are the cicada on my arm. The last three are after I put it back on the tree it was heading toward in the first place.

It's really amazing to me that I just happened along at the right time to see that. I've been wanting to see a nymph forever. There's really a pretty small window of time between when they come out of the ground (as wingless nymphs) and when they climb some vegetation and molt, becoming winged adults.

sigh

Happy now.

Hum, I am really happy for you, but up close it looks scary. Brrr. I am not an insect lover. I only have a distinct fondness for bumblebees, catterpillers/butterflies and ladybugs. They can walk over my arm if they want. Do you have a picture of what this little one will turn into? I don't know what cicadas look like.

It will probably look like this.

I'm fond of bumblebees, butterflies, and ladybugs, too. You know, I always have ladybugs in my room. I don't know why they like it in here, but there are always about five or so of them. One night I sat here and watched one do laps around the rim of a cup for a good couple of hours. :lol

Oh hum, it did not become much more attractive. I was expecting it to be more butterfly like.

Anyway, I used to have lots of ladybugs in my garden and I often found their dead little bodies in the bedroom of my former home. :(

Since I moved 4 years ago, I literally had not seen one ladybug until last week, then I saw two, one in my garden and one in town. Hopefully it was just one of those natural temporary population decline things and next year my garden will be alive with little red ladybugs again. Aside from them being cute they kill the damned lice in my trees. I could use them.

I just took a picture to show what kind of monsters may be lurking in your bedroom *right now*.

The creepy crawly in this picture is actual size, unfortunately it is blurred (then again that may be a good thing or it might be too traumatizing for some), but it is clear enough to prove that monsters do exist.

Drag & drop or copy this link into the address bar of your browser and prepare to be horrified.

I took a big bowl and put it over the creature and slid a paper between it and the wall. This type of beast is very fast and they bite. I managed to cover the bowl with the paper and deposit the mutant outside. I'd rather find the yeti in my closet or the loch ness monster in my toilet than have a freak like that crawling on my walls of my bedroom.

How would you have done that Brian? Without it's bloated body defiling a white wall I mean? The idea of having to scrape a little oozing spider body and its 8 legs off a wall grosses me out way more than covering it with a bowl and tossing it outside. Brrr.

I have a great way of killing spiders (or any other crawling insect) when you don't want to have to clean up anything afterwards...

I just use duct tape :lol

You use like a few inches, and hold one end with your index finger and the other with your thumb. Then move your finger and thumb closer together, so that the tape forms an arc. Then just touch the spider, it sticks right away. Then just fold the tape together and you have a dead spider, with nothing to clean up afterwards :grin

Brian, that's such a great tip. I don't have duct tape though, but I do have that clear packaging tape. I am sure it's just as effective but it won't look as good :p

And let me tell ya.... Those kids where SO cute and friendly and nice and sweet and just awwww... You wouldn't have thought that this classroom was right in the heart of badness. But, it was definitely worth it, getting a chance to meet them. It gave me up close and personal reason why I was doing what I was doing over there. Glad you all like the pics. Once I get the hang of that yahoo photo album thingie, I will post more. =)

Thanks for posting your pics Aaron. The one with the school kids is lovely, they look very cute indeed and their teacher looks like a very nice lady. I hope these girls will have the chance to grow up in peace and with the chance to be whoever they want to be.

just been out taking photos of the flooding around my area. Luckily the river hasn't broken the stop banks near my house. But most of these photos were taken about 2 minutes walk from where I live.

As a comparison, this is what it usually looks like (taken from further down the river about 6 months ago.

and these photos were taken about 30 minutes ago.

walkway open??

river

river again

more water

it looks like the rain is clearing up around the city, but I just hope it stops up in the ranges - but they are telling us there could be another 150mm to come over night....

I find flood pics very fascinating. I'm always amazed at the power of water.

I hope the rain stops soon dulcinea. We had a small flash flood last year (first ever) and it was very interesting to see that much water. The good news is that it didn't do any real damage. It's no fun to be in the way of a real flood.

well Garf that's the secret of bumper bowling :p it's all about the bump. My little guy actually pitched a spare. The celebratory dance was priceless. Yay for a high score of 72!
