Working and simultaneously trying to pull files off the hard drive of my Macbook after dropping it and pretty much destroying it in the process.

Working on my story, chatting with friends, and getting ready to nuke my lunch! Unless I give up on the burrito and take myself out for Chinese food.

Homework. They're "getting us ready for adult life" by having us plan a wedding in detail, and also putting together a resume.

Teachers, if I'm just putting together a resume, I have no business planning a wedding.

I can think of about 23 things that would make you more ready for adult life than planning a wedding - choosing a college, interviewing for a job, filling out a loan application, finding an apartment, making sure you know how to do laundry without turning it all pink, using birth control effectively... Also, having a school activity devoted to dreaming of and planning something that some people can't even legally do in this country is idiotic. Ok, sorry to get worked up there.

Yes, the 'I refuse to do this project if you're forcing hetero-normativity onto us' card had been played. I've long since stopped trying to comprehend the logic behind teachers. Though, most of the things you listed were dealt with the first three years of highschool. I think, coming to the end of senior year, they're just running out of ideas and making us do busy work.

Nice of them to pair me up with a girl who's had a crush on me for years, though. The girl is taking this project waaay to seriously.

I, too, can think of another . . . at least a dozen . . . basic life skills I really fucking wish I'd learned in high school that would come before 'planning a wedding.' Like, without thinking hard; I'm sure I could come up with more.

But I'm me, so I can't resist chiming in, even if it is throwing fuel on the fire. (Hugs, Deb!)

Depending on how the teachers go about it, the 'how to plan a wedding' exercise could be useful teaching tool. Off the top of my head, wedding planning could teach: large and small scale organization (and the integration thereof), budget management for a one-time event (as opposed to recurring budgets like those of a household or business), price negotiation (which US citizens, at least, get essentially no experience with), an introduction to interacting with the legal system (this would actually be a more in-depth lesson if the assignment was to plan a same-sex wedding), prioritization, and how to decide when to do something yourself versus hire a specialist.

All of those are great skills to have.

Of course, that's assuming that the activity is presented as I would present it: "here is a complex problem space, let's learn to navigate through it," as opposed to "well, you're going to get married, so you need to know how to do this." Also, it's a great chance to talk about why people want to get married, what it means to different people in different cultures. And in California in particular, why it matters to people that same sex marriage is legalized even though the state has very good domestic partnership laws and recognizes out of state, same-sex marriage.

But then again, we're talking about California, which has a fucking shitty education system , so . . . not holding my breath.

Given all that though? I'd still prioritize a lot of other things ahead of that activity. If I were teaching and wanted a similar "complex problem" example, I think "going from living at home to living in an apartment" would fill it well and teach a lot more immediately required skills. Like what a deposit on an apartment is. Or setting up a recurring budget.

Personally, I'm going through Neverland and trying to predict what has to happen next. Which is not at all me avoiding writing myself. Nope. *cough*

I'm sitting sideways in my chair thinking what adult skills I wish I'd had - budgeting, house buying, investment stuff, how to COOK something besides canned soup, white rice, and eggs/bacon/potatoes!

I'm also getting ready for bed.

Working at home in the evening. It's pretty unusual but we needed to get these projects deleted when most people aren't in the database. I figured the boss expected us to go in but he said do it at home. Of course, it's taking longer at home...

Just got done grilling for the kiddos that are inhabiting my pool today:) Later we plan on taking all of them to see MIB3, with a promise that they'd take care of the yard work next week. :banana Perfect holiday!

Packing to leave for San Diego. Just graduated HS, and my little sister is turning 13.

I thought "Why not go for a two-fer, and celebrate both this week?"

My wife, daughter and I are 'nearding' out and watching PBS. First, a cool episode of NOVA about how venom aids mankind. Now we're watching, Inside Nature's Giants, about Pythons in the Florida Everglades. Fascinating!

And so begins the annual "summer kid swap." I'm getting ready to drive a few hours north, meet my brother half way and pick up my niece. I live in-between my brother and sister. He's 5 hours north and she's 7 hours south. Lucky for me my nephew just turned 18 yesterday, has a car and is driving himself and the other two nephews up today. So, one less trip for me:) Anyway, my wife and I will be the proud owners of 5 teenagers for the next 2 weeks. My last errand of the day, hitting the liquor store...hard. :p

Shelby,

Hilarious . . even through the pain! :wink

What am I doing? Contemplating making breakfast at 10:21 a.m. and wondering how I got chiseled into a work meeting on a day off?

Yep, not the sharpest crayon in the box!

Just got back from making an appointment to get a tattoo! It's been six long years since I got my other one. I'm sure between now and Wednesday I'll get myself all worked up and freaked out. It'll also be the first time I get one done without a friend accompanying me and keeping my mind occupied. Here goes nothing!
