Great pictures, fascinating to see. You have a great eye for detail (love the beehive). I don´t think I would have gone in either, that building looks so decomposed, like it might collaps any minute. The graffiti actually made it look better.

Yes, I was deeply spooked out there. It's very hard to get to, quite a hike. And it was windy, so there was lots of scraping and banging inside the buildings. There are actually a lot of buildings on the site and I took pictures in only two. I didn't go inside most of the first building, because, yes, the floor is rotten and the basement beneath that floor is flooded. Another part of that building had a cement floor and I felt comfortable walking on that. I didn't venture too far in, though, because it was fucking creepy and I could easily imagine the Blair Witch hanging out around a dark corner in there...waiting for me and my camera...



Thanks, xita, for reminding me of that Session Nine movie. I'm absolutely guaranteed to have nightmares now. If I'd stumbled upon any reels of audio tape, I would probably have gone insane on the spot.



G, that was a wasp's nest. One of many. I tried counting them all, but I'm terribly afraid of stinging insects, so I had to stop. It was creeping me out. One more reason to never, ever, ever go out there during the summer.



I love good graffiti and I was delighted to come across some in such a desolate place. It made me feel better.



Steel mills are just creepy by nature, I think. They cannot look any other way than skeletal. Add to that, the horrific conditions under which those people worked and lived...and so many were killed on the job...it's terrible. Yet, I can't help but be drawn to them for some reason.

Oh wasps, I could not tell the difference without the little stingers themselves in it. It seems oddly appropriate to have that abandoned decaying nest there in that abandoned decaying building. It makes the place seem more desolate and devoid of life. Creepy but fascinating. This graffiti is beautiful indeed, too beautiful for that place really.

I have a Sony Cybershot, model DSC-S85, 4.1 megapixels. It's been discontinued, of course, but I think Sony discontinues everything after about a month. Anyway, though I lust after some of those models with more megapixels, this camera more than meets my needs. At 4.1 megapixels, I can still take gigantic pictures that look good at their full size. Plus, this camera is small and light. I love it a whole lot.

I've got a wonderful new digital camera, a Canon PowerShot G5. And today I figured out how to use the "PhotoStitch" function, where you can take a sequence of photos with the camera, download the shots into your computer, and the camera will tell the computer how to stitch them together to create a panorama.



Check it out!











That second shot is one of the fire zones from back in October. The grass is growing again, but as you can see there are still a lot of blackened burned patches around.

Well... basically the thing I take the most pictures of are my pets. I know I have no life, but they're so much fun!



I'm probably emotionally closest to our quaker parrot Fangorn cause he's so sweet and outgoing. Unfortunately that's the only good picture of him that I have uploaded, because he's usually too fast for my camera.





My other baby is Orion our few month old male ball python. He really surprises me with how calm yet curious he is.

GreenNeutron, cute parrot and that python is absolutely beautiful. I'm curious though, how big can he get?

DrG, a male ball python will max out at about 4-4.5'. The biggest ball python that I've ever heard of is a pretty old female (probably upwards of 20 years or so) who's a little over 6' long and about 12 lbs. But basically these guys don't get all that big as far as pythons go, and their natural instinct when confronted with anything scary is to curl up into a ball (hence the name) and stop eating their food for a few weeks.

Today I hiked up the Chumash Trail toward Rocky Peak, which separates Simi Valley in Ventura Co CA from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles Co. The wildfires swept through here back in October, and many parts of the trail look like some kind of strange alien wasteland. Take a look:

Bob, as always beautiful pictures.

BFR, it worked, great pictures. Interesting thing for me in picture number 3. My grandparents brought back a chess table for me from spain many years ago. On the side of the table there are ornate arches just like the ones in those pictures. Now I wonder whether that is Spanish architecture blown over to Morocco, or whether my chess table is actually Moroccan.

Craft (or Craft's, not sure) is in the viscinity of Big Bear Lake. It's not really on a trail proper, more following old forest 4WD roads and firebreaks. It's in San Bernardino NF off SR 18.

Natti: Thank you. I try. It is hard to take pictures when the light is so low because the exposure time is so long, and staying still long enough can be a problem. I love getting up early, though, so I've had a number of opportunities to practice on sunrises. ;o)
