My father called a little while ago. He called under the pretext of checking on us because of the fires. He always thinks any disaster in Texas means we're in danger. I mean ok, there was a fire just 30 miles from here but most of the fires are far far away. Anyway, he was all... "well... I haven't heard from anyone so I thought I'd start calling..." I said that he seemed to have a good proactive attitude and that yes, if you don't get calls on your phone, you can call people. I wasn't smart-assed (except in my head) but seriously. We talked 6 minutes and 14 seconds and as soon as we hung up, I told the kids he called and Chiara wanted to talk to him. I tried to explain that 6 minutes is about as long as he ever talks but she looked at me like I was insane or something.

I don't believe Leroy Brown was really all that bad. I mean, I know about the .32 and the razor in his shoe and all that - and I'll admit anyone who carries around shit like that is probably pretty bad ... but in the first and only fight the song mentions, he gets his ass handed to him. There's nothing in the song to suggest he'd seen better days or was getting past his prime; on the contrary, you could argue the song portrays him as at the top of his game. Personally, I think he just had good PR. All talk and no walk.

Another random moment...

A conversation with my daughter, on a recent trip to PetCo to get a new hamster, a wheel, etc....

J: Mom get this one, I like the color.
Me: I don't like it, it's metal.
J: So, what's the big deal? Come on Mom! It's pretty!
Me: It's metal, which means it's gonna squeak when she runs in it. You know, like fingernails on a chalkboard?
J: Ugh, Mom! Even I know what to do to stop it.
Me: Really? How?
J: All you have to do is spray it with a little 'AK-47' and it takes the squeak right away!

I'm sleeping in the couch lately even though we're definitely far from fighting... somehow my back is so screwed up that the mattress that was supposed to be so good for said back is hurting me, and the couch is comfier...

So we went out to night to a belly dancing show that a friend of mine organizes. Last month Asher and I went because Chiara was sick with allergies so she and Rachel stayed home. Anyway, Ash met a little girl named Violet and both of them have been just waiting to meet each other again this month (her mom danced tonight). So at one point before the show started Ash & Violet were playing and Rachel said something to him and she looked at Rachel and asked why Rachel was telling him what to do or whatever so Rachel said "It's ok, I'm his mom." And Violet looked at both of us and then pointed at me and said "I thought you were his mom." So we said, yes Asher has two moms. And she looked confused for 5-7 seconds and then shrugged. It was the strangest reaction I've ever seen from a kid.

So later my friend the organizer brings Violet's mom over to meet us and says "This is my friend Debra - we work together and her wife Rachel and their kids Asher and Chiara." So Violet says "mom, they said Asher has two moms." (still looking confused) and her mom goes. "Right. That's ok. Like Ellen."

We about fell over. Like Ellen. Yep, that's us Ellen and Portia. Rachel called Portia but I'm fine with being Ellen.

How I Met Your Mother

Our daughter made us breakfast and served it to us in bed this morning. She cooked veggie omelets and baked blueberry muffins. It was wonderful and pretty darn good for an 11yr old. While we ate she sat on the love seat next to the bed, making sure we liked it...and then she spoke.

J: Hey, can I ask you guys a question?
Us: Sure honey, go ahead.
J: What does anal mean?

And with that I say, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY and have a drink, 'cuz you're gonna need it!
