I have 2 pet related random moments:

1- Last night I was camped in front of the TV and I noticed the big doggie pillow was moving by itself across the floor. Freaky, yes, until a little white head popped out and sneezed. Turns out it was one of the Chihuahua's that had crawled inside a hole it had chewed in the corner. That dog does like to burrow, lol.

2- Was woken up at the ass crack of dawn this morning by screeching Mockingbirds outside our bedroom window. I opened the drape to find one of our cats on the roof being attacked by several 'angry birds.' It was pretty funny! He was lying there flicking his tail and they were dive bombing him and the fur was a flyin!' :whip :kdevil

Shelby: Poor kitty! (Also: dammit woman where the hell is my Racing? Wait . . . I don't get to bitch about updating, do I? Fuck.)

Speaking of which . . .

So, I write this story, "Queen of Hearts" (link in the dooblie-doo). It was named for the song because Amber Benson singing it is like, well, one of the hottest things ever. Also  because there's a poker game at the start of the episode where Willow and Tara's relationship gets complicated. And in the story, it's set up so Tara is the queen of hearts, because that's the card Willow needed, and it's this whole bit with the metaphor and whatnot.

But here's the thing.

This is the chorus of the song:
Playing with the queen of hearts,
knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool
who'll do anything for you

Now, this is awesome for two reasons. First, the story is set up that Tara knows that getting involved with Willow isn't the smartest move. Like, she gets that Willow is straight and still has feelings for Oz, but does it anyway.

Second, it turns out that in the video game "Mass Effect," there is a character voiced by none other than Seth Green. That character is named, I shit you not, "Joker."

When I discovered the second point (after I'd started posting the story, mind you), I could not stop laughing. Adam was playing Mass Effect at the time, and wanted to know what the hell was wrong with me.

It was just too perfect: all of a sudden, the song I had picked because Amber sang it and I thought it was hot turned into a song about New Moon Rising. I mean, the queen of hearts is even a red card.

So yeah. Awesomesauce.

I'm watching a photography 'how to' video of one of my favorite portrait photographers and every other word out of her mouth is "Actually." Actually this and actually that...reminds me of the HIMYM episode where the college kids invented a drinking game around Robin saying "But Um" during her newscasts, LOL. But um, but um, but um...actually, actually, actually............

Background part 1: My father has spent many years making fun of me for watching Buffy and, by extension, Angel.
Background part 2: My father lets me use his netflix account, which unless I'm quite mistaken has never been used by anyone but the two of us.

Random Moment: Just popped onto netflix, and what did I see in the "Recently Watched" section? Angel. I am SO gonna blackmail my dad for this...

A conversation with my daughter...

J: Mom, what kind of bird do you think Pirate is?
Me: Maybe a crow or some sort of black bird.
J: Are you sure?
Me: Not really, why don't you ask Aunt P? She's the bird girl.
J: I already did, she's pretty sure he's a crackle.
Me: A 'crackle?'
J: Yeah, a great-tailed crackle.
Me: You mean a Grackle?"
J:That's what I said, a Crackle!

I went bra shopping today. There is nothing as surreal as having 2 middle-aged women - one black and one white assessing your bra and how it fits and how your breasts fit in it.

Conversation with my 10 yr old nephew that is hanging out here for the next 2 weeks...

E: Aunt Shelby, I don't like this guacamole.
ME: Why not?
E: Well for starters, we can get it cheaper at home and it tastes different; better.
ME: Oh really and you know this how? You haven't taken a single bite.
E: Well, I guess I could actually taste it.
Grabs chip, dips and practically throws it at himself. Guacamole goes in his hair, up his nose and down his shirt.
ME: Uh, weren't you supposed to put that in your mouth? *Giggling*
E: See? I told you I didn't like it for a reason...because it doesn't like me back!

Cleared out the camera today in preparation for vacation. I found a video of one of my brothers at a school awards ceremony. The announcer calls him 'Nicole' and he has to correct her, at which the whole auditorium laughs.

Also cleared out the fridge in preparation for vacation. Apparently when orange juice goes bad it goes really, horribly, putridly bad.

Yesterday the little one and I were coloring with sidewalk chalk, and as usual I was a bit stumped on what to draw; my artistic skills are virtually non-existent, and shapes and crappy butterflies get boring after a while. I had this really pretty deep-blue chalk in my hand, which makes me think of the TARDIS from Doctor Who, and the little one suddenly handed me one of the pink chalks, which was kind of a rose color, and suddenly I knew what I had to do.
With a chalk in each hand, I drew a heart, half TARDIS-blue and half rose, for The Doctor and one of his great loves, Rose. I couldn't just leave it at that though, cause what about his other loves? So I drew a heart that was half TARDIS-blue and half lighter blue, for The Doctor and River, and a heart that was all TARDIS-blue for The Doctor and his TARDIS.
I am truly the biggest dork I know.

I am writing a character reference for my friend's second parent adoption application. I'm glad that she asked me and it's a wonderful thing to do. This is maybe the 4th of these I've written and for every one I'm proud to do it. But at the same time I'm just so offended that we have to go through this practice of showing that we're good parents just to be legal parents of our children...

Still, at least we have the right to do it. In some states, they don't have that.

My 10 yr old nephew is standing in front of the TV playing Wii ping pong, randomly farting and giggling. I can't wait for the day when I can remind him of what he did when he was younger and it actually embarrasses him. Although, knowing him, he'll probably still be doing it proudly, lol.

LH - Me too. Always.

So my SIL called the house this morning. She has called probably 8-10 times in the last 11 years. I would say that my wife's entire family has called us less than 20 times in 11 years on the home phone. It's not like they call her cell phone that often either but certainly not the home phone. So I answered the phone and said hi and she said hi and she said how was everything and I said fine and I said was everything ok and she said she needed to speak to Rachel. Needless to say this made both of think that something had happened to Rachel's parents (who are both over 80 years old). Nope SIL was calling to find out the kids's favorite colors or something and had no idea why we would think something was wrong...

Today is the day. My team is rolling out new applications for nearly every important application in our office. We've been working on this for years but very intensely for the past 9 months and really really hard the last 3 weeks. I worked until 5:30 yesterday and the other 3 folks on the project were still there when I left. One of them worked past 11 on Thursday night. We meet at 8:00 and I hope we'll be done by 2 (since it is a Saturday) but we have until 8:00 pm to finish. I hope it all works. I hope it all goes smoothly. I hope there aren't too many bugs to handle next week. And I hope that when it's done we can all just breathe easily. Our team got a new boss about 2 months ago and since then we've pushed out 2 huge projects. I can't tel that management is watching or impressed but hopefully they will take some notice.

I'm tired and excited and eager to just finish it.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. It went as well as I could have expected. It took about 5.5 hours (after 18-24 months) and it's done. Now we'll see how many things go wrong next week.

My random moment:

So we went out to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. We probably go there 3-4 times a month. Tonight: thing #1 - they were out of re fried beans (huh?), #2 - They were out of salsa until they made more #3 - They were slow. Like really really slow. Like our food took probably 20 minutes and the restaurant was not full. My salad came with the other food (which is ok but weird) and Rachel's potatoes weren't ready so they came separate from her migas. Anyway, just as we get our food, the manager wanders by and leans over the wall and says how are things. I think she was just sort of gladhanding but we both said... uh... not stellar. So she said why and we said, slow, slow, slow, no beans, had to wait for salsa. Rachel said it may have been our worst Trudy's experience ever which is probably exaggerating. Anyway, the manager said sorry and wandered off. A few minutes later she came by and gave us a $20 gift card, sorry for the inconvenience, etc.

Anyway, so we eat and Rachel takes the kids to trade in their crayons for toys while I pay. When the waiter handed me the bill, I put in the gift card and my debit card and while he was clearing dishes I told him that the manager came by , she asked, we weren't trying to complain and he did a fantastic job of letting us know what was going on, checking in, etc. Ok... so while I'm talking to him, I'm speaking emphatically (like I do) and gesturing with my hands and out of the corner of my eye I see the manager spot us and sort of run over and interrupt to say "is everything ok?" So then I had to explain to her... yes, I am speaking emphatically but emphatically happy. I said I was saying he did well. She was like..."oh... good. I was confused. I was thinking, I thought I made it better?"

I share a bathroom with no one, except one of my roommate's cats who likes to sleep under the sink. Last night after I took a shower I laid a towel on the floor while I was dripping, and I left it there. Pretty sure it was still there this morning. This evening, halfway to the toilet I realized I was walking on tile. I have NO IDEA where the towel went, and have absolutely no memory of moving it.
