SUDS

Postby ShamelessEve » Sat Sep 27, 2003 11:37 pm

I don't really know how to go about this, especially since i'm a total lurker, but well, okay the sitch is this (mods feel free to move this), I'm 16 and i go to high school in chicago, I'm in an afterschool club called SUDS (students understanding diverse sexuality - our version of a GSA) that meets once a week, anyway, i've been in this club for the past three years, but this year i'm up for office, and while i've enjoyed the organization, it really is a lot of talk and not a lot of participation by it's members. This year i've decided to get more involved rather than just be a member and go along with what the club presidents come up with.

Basically, i have come to the kitties for some ideas on what to do with the club, maybe some people in the chicago area who would like to come speak of their experiences or something. A few ideas are a movie once a month (so any suggestions are welcome) and we're looking into public speakers, and events (so again, any suggestions welcome), and we are trying to find a way to expand membership (btw, membership can be completely annonymous to those outside the club, it's goal is to be a safe haven).

Well, i guess what i'm getting at is if you have suggestions, i would really like to hear them.

I think you have some great ideas (although maybe this should go on the high school kitties thread?). . . There are some great resources out there for queer youth groups, including:

- GLSEN's Students and GSAs page

- the California-based but very useful GSA Network

Get involved in Boston's queer community. Go out and do stuff, don't just stay at school. Are you an official club? If not, work for that. Do a big visibility campaign so people know you're there - both to add members and to get people thinking about sexuality. Have forums for the school where they can talk about queer issues. Go to conferences. Have counselors in for support groups.

I heart queer youth groups. I run a website for the San Diego Gay Youth Alliance.
