What is your preference? Girlfriend, Partner etc.

Postby WillowTara4Lyfe » Sun Sep 07, 2003 11:32 pm

What do you call your significant other? Girlfriend, partner, lover, significant other, companion, better half, other half or mate? :hmm

My girlfriend's mother was trying to figure out a name to use for me when my girlfriend comes out to her father. Her mother suggested that she call me her significant other. We prefer girlfriend however. Her mother thought significant other would sound less harsh.

We are curious as to what other kittens call the loves of their lives. :pride :kitty

I like both Partner and girlfriend. I think for me it depends on the circumstances. If your seriously committed and living together, than I would say partner. If you're together and not living together, than I would say girlfriend.

That's just me though. Other half, significant other... those just don't sound personal enough for me.

I just think it should be whatever term you are comfortable with for your relationship, I would use girlfriend as well. It shouldn't be a term decided by your girlfriend's mother and I don't think changing 'girlfriend' to 'significant other' is going change her father's reaction to the fact she is gay, gender has to be mentioned somewhere in the fact she is coming out and saying she has a girlfriend is probably a quicker route.

Hope it all works all for the best whatever you decide on!!

Girlfriend, I like the idea that she's my girl, and my friend...partner has always sounded strange to me, kind of boxe partner, or crime partner, but maybe that's because I'm Italian, and here the word partner is often associated merely to sex (or mainly to sex) than to the whole emotional relationship. In Italian I prefer "ragazza", that's to say simply "girl". But here it'is full of implications: "E' la mia ragazza", here sounds like "We're definitely together, we're in love."

And that's what I want to say whenever I talk about her...:blush

I prefer girlfriend...when things got a little more serious I'd sometimes say partner...then when I got the ring..fiancé..heh

but ultimately, whatever the term used should be something you're both comfortable with... ;)

Oh, oh, I love lover girlfriend and love :grin Because that's just what a girlfriend is, right? ;)

Significant other huh? Somehow I think that sounds funny and actually I think it sounds kind of harsh... :hmm Well, maybe it's only me who thinks that... :blush

And no matter what we call our love, it is always our love right? :)

Somehow I don't like 'better' or 'other half'. I like both my halfs the way they are, no matter if I am in a relationship or not. And I don't feel somehow incomplete if I am not involved with someone.

So uhm.. now after I said what I don't like I can't really say what I prefer.. uhh.. yeah..

I prefer girlfriend until there's a strong commitment, like moving in together or getting engaged. I guess I might use partner if we're living together. But I want to get married for sure, and then she'll be my wife :)

Gotta get me a girlfriend first though. Classes start Monday.... yay new students to get crushes on!

I guess I use partner, or my girl, girlfriend, depending on who I am talking to. Around friends and stuff it's, my girl, your girl etc, but say I was talking to the doctor I would use Partner. When it comes to family though, we just use our names. And my girls mother always introduces me as a friend, or I share a house with her daughter - Not really big on us being together - could be that we have never actually come out to her, although she has to know as we have been living together for over 6 years and do everything as a couple.

Im not 100% sure why, but I dont really like the name wife, in a gay relationship, dont know why, I just dont.

After living together this summer, my gf and I are making plans for me to move to Florida next June (I live in Boston). I am using "partner" much more consistently since we have made the decision - I joked to a friend that she got upgraded from "girlfirend" to "partner". I also use "partner" when I mention her in conversation with congregants at my temple where I teach - it sounds more formal to me, more committed - "life-partner" as opposed to "business partner". I'm not sure about "wife" yet. I was watching repeats of Gay Weddings on Bravo yesterday, and the minister proclaimed the two women "spouse and spouse", which seemed really stilted to me. I would love to be able to get married though. :heart

I'm with you on this one, T Maclay, "wife" doesn't ring well for me. Don't know exactly why, though.

I'm getting used with the term "partner". I use it ocasionally, but I can't forget the Portuguese translation, which is used mostly related to crime or sports. That's why I have a hard time with it. But it does sound more serious.

We've been living together for almost four years now, but I still use "girlfriend" most of the times I talk about my girl. Among close friends and at home, she will always be my baby. That's my favorite. :)

We kind of use all of those words to describe us. It just depends on who we're talking to.

We use Partner most of the time. Usually with people who know us really well or when we're out shopping looking for big purchases. I had a hard time adjusting to it but I'm pretty comfortable with it now. With my sister's wedding coming up, we need to discuss exactly how we will introduce her to my family. Partner, girlfriend, etc.

We use Girlfriend when meeting people for the first time.

I use wife only when she nags me about something and I'm trying to piss her off or when we're goofing around with friends. Otherwise, wife doesn't really sit well with me either. :hmm

And when we're being all love-y: My wonderful Significant other/lover seems to fit.

I like what 3peanuts had to say too. I'll have to talk to gram about that. She's all with the Italian. Maybe that's how I could introduce my love at the wedding. Ha. That would throw some of them into a bewildered frenzy. :grin

How about "my everything"? But I guess that's very serious.

I have the same problem, in my language we use the same word for both girlfriend and girl and that word just sounds harsh to me.

Partner... I don't know. It's... well it won't hide the fact she's a girl cause my language is formed in a way that makes it impossible to speak non gender-ish. And it sounds like something I used in school, my lab partner, my dance partner, my skipping class partner...

As for pet names, I've been called kid (cause I'm like two years younger), little heater (I'll let your imagination work that one out), blondie (my hair is black though...), smartie (after nestle's candy). And I called her sweetest thing, charming, blondie (she is blonde!!) and slacker.

But pet names depend on your personalities.

Well, I call her "cucciolo", that is "puppy". Sometimes I just burst out with things like "divina", there's always a religious subtext in the expressions I use at bedtime...wondering why, I noticed it right now...

And there are times I just call her "love"....

I use "My better half" and she uses "my other half" and in socially demanding situations, we use "'er indoors" :whistle

However, we don't use girlfriend because the conversation gets messy when talking about actual girlfriends (best friends etc).

Names are also a bonus, I call her Sue and she calls me Nicks.... :wink

Me and Al were talking about this just the other day...strange...lol :hmm

Anyway, we just stick to babes, lover or girlfriend. At the moment to my mates shes my "friend" (funny story behind that) and the same to my parents as they're not all that cool with us being together **sigh** :tear

Partner just sunds so impersonal to me although I will use it at work when talking to customers (I work in Sainsburys) as it saves time and questions.

Pet names - she calls me Wolfy and shes my Bear (soooo original! :rofl )

Personnaly i find "partner" a bit too businessy.. ;)

When we talk about our mutual girlfriends, with my friends, we often say (in french) "comment va ta belle?" meaning "how is your beautiful?" (i can't find a proper translation). I think it's a cute way to call your significant other :pride

Plus it was mainly used a few centuries ago, so it often makes you think about a nice innocent young lady (who is not always that innocent.. :wink )

Gotta go with girlfriend if it's a new relationship and partner if you've been together for a while.

I have always disliked significant other. It's sounds so so sterile.

Just my opinion.
