The Relocation Thread

Postby marcenik » Wed Nov 05, 2003 8:13 am

Mods - If this is not the right place for this - please move it - Thanks - :applause

My partner is originally from the UK ( Manchester area) and has been inthe states 13 years, is a US citizen now etc. I am born and bred here in the US. I have visited there many times with her. We have been talking for sometime now about moving to the UK. She has been getting very homesick - all her family is there - and tho I have some fear and apprehension about moving to a completely different country ( mostly for economic reasons)- where she goes - so shall I.

My question is - has anyone relocated from the US to the UK - and if so - could you send me in the direction of any info on Emmigrating, Domestic Partnership for non UK citizens - etc. My partner holds dual citizenship - so going back for her is no problem - as I am told "once a royal subject, always a royal subject". But I dont know the complications I would have. Should I apply for a visa before we go - wait till I am there? etc...

Any info anyone has would be extremely helpful - as I think that this is an idea that will be coming to fruition within the year.

Thanks to all the kittens in advance.

Haven't got any experience of this myself, but I think you might find this link helpful:

First of all, good luck and best wishes to you, Marcy, with any move you and your partner decide to make.

Secondly, I hope that nobody minds if I use this as a general relocation question thread.

I have about two years left before I finish my education degree and I was thinking about moving to either Maine or Vermont, possibly New Hampshire. I live in Massachusetts, but there is no way in hell I am teaching in this state. I am hoping that there are some ME/VT/NH kittens that could offer opinions on the state of these states. Do you love them and will never leave? Hate them and will never return? I'm a MA native, living near Boston now, so I have a decent idea of what New England weather is like.

I'd love to hear anybody's thoughts, either here or you can drop a message in my Inbox. Thanks.

Nix - thanks so much for the website , it was very helpful indeed.

Kerry - funny you should mention Vermont. I presently live in Rhode Island, but prior to that I live in VT for 6 years. I still have many friends there. I loved every moment of my life in VT, and would probably still be there were it not for the love a good woman that drew me to the Ocean State. Plus growing up in NYC, I am a city girl at heart.

If you want the beauty of nature, serenity and a laid back way of life, I cannot think of a better place than the Green Mountains. The populace is part homegrown, part transient and part those like me who moved there as a temporary thing and wound up staying for a long time.

Snow, and lots of it, is a given in the winter. The only negative things I can say are : 1. prepare to drive a ways for any modern conveniences ( starbucks, dunkin donuts, movie theatre) unless you live in a larger city or town. and 2. The cost of living is higher than the median income for residents. Most people have more than one job to make ends meet depending where you live. But it is worth it if you stay.

Good luck to you whatever you decide!
