What's going on in your town!

Postby vix84 » Fri Aug 29, 2003 1:04 am

Since kittens are all over the place (uh, physically), I'm sure many of us miss out on events that might be of interest. So this is for any type of event, be it festival/concert/talk, that other kittens might like to attend. And if you want to be nice, put the country or state in bold so people notice.

Sydney, Australia. 4-7 September. Queerdoc Film Festival, Chauvel Cinema, Paddington. Tix are $14/11.50 (adult/conc) and available online.

Here are just a few of the films screening. Look here for more details.

CLASS QUEERS

52 mins, Canada, 2003, video

Directed by Melissa Levin, Roxana Spicer & Howard Fraeburg

Three students attend the Triangle Program, an alternative high school classroom for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth, located in the basement of a church in downtown Toronto. The film follows three of the students. They are Adina, the 15 year old daughter of a conservative Rabbi, Adam, a 17 year old youth who wants a boyfriend, and Richard, who is 17 and lives with his gay-intolerant mother and her homophobic boyfriend.

LIPSTICK

10 mins, USA, 2003, video

Directed by Michael Apted

Renowned director Michael Apted has made a touching coming out story of a teenager and her school friends. (Not a documentary, but very pertinent and realistic).

TEACHING TEO

15 mins, USA, 2003, video

Directed by Diane Dodge

Described officially as a mockumentary, this is a how-to film on politically correct child-rearing Berkeley-lesbian style. Teaching Teo provides advice that Dr Spock never dreamed of.

BEYOND VANILLA

91 mins, USA, 2002, video

Directed by Claes Lilja

Beyond Vanilla explores the kinkier aspects of sex on the other side of vanilla. With interviews, demonstrations and a good dose of how-to instructions, this documentary covers the gamut of fetishes and SM practices. For the curious, the voyeur, or the enthusiast, this is a fascinating journey into the world of high performance sexual athletes, where the boundaries of gay, straight, bi or transgender seem almost irrelevant. Open your mind and the rest will follow...

Guaranteed to make almost anybody squirm with delight, disgust or disbelief. London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

3pm Jim in Bold

DON’T YOU WORRY, IT WILL PROBABLY PASS

74 mins, Sweden, 2003, video

Directed by Cecilia Neant-Falk

Subtitled

Three young Swedish girls deal with their lesbian identity and struggle with coming out. The film has a unique outlook in that digital camera technology is used to allow the girls to record their own feelings and interviews. Director Cecilia Neant-Falk’s camera works as a secret video diary that records both the experiences and individual metamorphoses of each girl as well as the filmmaker herself.

I EXIST

56 mins, USA, 2003, video

Directed by Peter Barbosa & Garrett Lenoir

Gays and lesbians of Middle Eastern descent face homophobia within their own families and communities. I Exist gives a voice to members of this community.

Wow, Park Manor Suites is spectacular too. My grandparents stayed there while they were in town.

Also!

Dyke March San Diego is in its fifth year this year, I believe. There are planning meetings at The Center in Hillcrest in the Womens' Resource Center room every Wednesday, at seven PM.

Gay Day at Six Flags is the 26th, Latin Pride is the 27th and Dyke March is the 28th of September.

It's going to be a busy weekend. And I will be starting school on the 29th, in. . . Washington. Pout.

Also, a spectacular thing for literary dykes in San Diego is Siren, which is from 8:00-11:00 at David's Coffeehouse. It's an open mice, every other Thursday. The next one is the eleventh of September. A couple of us are trying to get together something special, because it'll be our last chance. Again with the going off to college. I'm thinking of doing an a capella version of Under Your Spell, but just typing it out makes me nervous. Who knows.

That's what's happening in San Diego, off the top of my head. All events mentioned are all-ages.

ETA - Also, there is a brand new baby panda at the zoo. Yay pandas.

Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival - Birmingham, Ala. 9/19-21

Postby maudmac » Thu Sep 11, 2003 4:08 pm

Okay, I know there aren't massive amounts of Kittens in and around Birmingham, Alabama (I'm so alone! :cry ) but I learned at Sidewalk last year that we have more than a few local lurkers. You know who you are. ;)

So...Sidewalk is next weekend, September 19-21, 2003. Yay. I'll sure be there.

Lots and lots of films, including Amber and Chris' Ghosts of Albion. I'm also interested to see D.E.B.S. somewhere besides my monitor. :lol

Anyway, if you're in the area, you can't miss this. Weekend passes are $22. Cheap-cheap for that many movies.

Holley,

I'll be at Sidewalk (but I'm from way up north in Indiana). If you're a student, weekend passes are only $17. So people should go 'cause it's gonna be fun. I'm looking forward to Jedi Hunter and Neverland.

Sarah

I've got an electric guitar. I play my stupid songs. I write these stupid words, and I love every one. If I went back some place I know that life was perfect like a TV show then 1993 is where I’d go cause Galaga was my only fight and it was cool to ride my bike we’d sneak out to cough on cigarettes and break it down with old cassettes up in my room it felt so safe where Kurt and Billy never looked at me strange.

Oh, wow, Sarah, really? That's great. Loooong trip. Are you driving or flying? Did you come last year?

Neverland looks like it'll be bizarre and cause much head-scratching. Yay! :bounce And The Jedi Hunter looks hilarious. Boba Fett as the Crocodile Hunter?!? :lol How can that go wrong?

I'm really excited about The Real Old Testament, Gaydar, and Homesick, among others. I'm just excited, period.

I hope you have a great trip, Sarah, and a great time while you're here.

Any other Kittens coming to Sidewalk? We should get together if anyone wants to.

I'll be driving down, and I did go last year. It'll be a bit longer trip this time around though cause of where in the state I moved. I'm estimating about a 9 to 10 hour drive because I have to make a detour to pick up my friend Kim. Last year it only took 5 to 6 hours. It'll be well worth it though. There's a film festival in Lexington, Kentucky the same weekend, but from the looks of it, I don't think it'll be anywhere near as good as Sidewalk. So guess which one I chose? If any other Kittens are going, it'd be cool to say "Hey" or something.

I'll say "Hey." But, sometimes I prefer, "Yo" or "Hello."

Kasey, does that mean you're coming to Sidewalk?

If whoever all is coming wants to get together or has any questions, don't hesitate to mail me.

Yeah, probably. Looks like I'll just be there for Saturday though and then head back home. I'm still trying to make a definite plan.

I'm heading up to B'Ham for Sidewalk today. If you guys decide to get together, let me know. (Holley, I will IM you with my phone number if you've lost it.)

I'm looking forward to it, and I can't wait to show Erik my new tattoo. Heh.

Sidewalk

Postby kbk3022 » Mon Sep 22, 2003 3:32 pm

I wasn't sure where to post this. I reckon I could've put it in the daily thread but I figured I'd stick it where we previously talked about it.

Anyway, I went to Sidewalk on Saturday. I had a pretty good time and saw some films. But I wanted to post a "It was nice to meet y'all" post to Holley, Sarah, and Kim. So... um... it was nice to meet y'all. Thanks to Holley for showing us to the food, and the way home. :)

Yep, it was nice to meet y'all. I'm glad we ran into each other.

I hope Sarah and The Kim have a safe trip home and didn't get rained on too badly Sunday. Massive rain seems to love Sidewalk for some reason.

Yes, very nice to meet up with everyone. So much thanks goes to Holley for showing us where to find food. As much as I love granola bars, fruit roll-ups, and Pez, real food was so nice (though I still don't know what the deal was with the tea).

'The Kim' and I did run into massive quantities of rain on the drive home. It seemed as if a monsoon followed us from Birmingham all the way to Evansville. I figured if I caught a few hours of sleep it might let up in that time, but it didn't. It followed me most of the way back to my place. There was a dry patch for about an hour before Indianapolis, but it started back up right after. Yep, buckets o' rain must be a Sidewalk tradition or something.

It was still a good weekend despite the rain. I'm already looking forward to next year. And Kasey, I'm sorry I made you lose the bet over I-65 to Chicago. 75% of the time I'm wrong. You should know that by now.

so what did you think holley? honestly, i had forgotten all about D.E.B.S. it didn't even occur to me what i was going to see tonight (i was really exhausted this time around, i guess not drinking can take its toll).

i was rolling in the balcony aisles. although i'm not sure how the audience handled it. lots of people came out bewildered.

and how about a little joel action in "I Am Stamos?" he was the last person i expected to see.

other highlights for me: dig! :eatme (oh sweet jesus, this was a good film. one of the best i've seen all year!), hide and creep, monster road (wacky clay animation guy), gettin' grown, santa vs. the snowman. unfortunately my companion is chronically tardy, so we missed anything that started before 2:30p.

a good festival this year, although the parties seem to suck more and more every year. the rooftop party at the redmont was flippin' sweet though, if for the view alone. and somebody, for the love of pete, buy alan hunter a muzzle. please. i cringe when he opens his mouth.

I just listened to her on her site, she has an amazing voice. Singing live no less, not every singer can pull it off in such an impressive way. I think I prefer her version of Imagine over the original.
