The silly names thread

Postby urnofosiris » Sat Dec 18, 2004 2:00 am

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to Xita and for some reason the (English) meaning of our last/family names came up. I was curious whether other people´s last names have any special meaning or whether they are just very silly? They don´t really have to have a special meaning perse or be silly in your own language, if you have a non English last name it could just be amusing to literally translate it into English, some perfectly normal last names in your own language may sound pretty silly in English. You don´t have to share your own last name if you don´t want to, you can share other last names that are in use in your country as well. Of course there is no offense intended to people with silly last names. :p

Let me start with my own name "van den Berg" which is Dutch for "from the mountain".

We have a few other last names that are silly even in Dutch, like:

"Poepjes" which translates into "little farts" or "small farts" if you will.

"Naaktgeboren" whichs translates into "born naked".

There are more of course, but I´ll have to check the phone book first.

Edited to add: the meanings or translations of given names can be fun too as shown below.

Hey DrG!

I shall be the first to add a few amusing names to this thread.

Two of my all time favourites (although these involve first names too) are Debbie Snot and Gaik Twaddle.

Although I must say writing their names must be much more interesting than writing mine, Rachel Chapman, I am a sheep (Rachel) peddler (Chapman) and amusingly enough, (as many of you will agree that it is), my middle name (Leah) means cow :p

See now that is fun :laugh , I had no idea that your name would translate into anything else. :moo There are actually people named Snot or is that a translation into English too?

Another one that I had never heard of until recently:

Blotevogel = naked bird

Nopers! That is really a person's name!! I remember reading this newspaper with my sister and we came across an article written by a woman named Debbie Snot. Needless to say, it was a source of much amusement for awhile (no offense to anyone named snot or any other nose-like substance).

Yes indeed, names are funny things! I found mine oddly appropriate although I had to wonder why my parents named me after a female sheep. :sheep

I remember the deep depression brought on by my name translation.

A cherry war criminal. Not really sure if the cherry is wood or the actual fruit. The War criminal part is what disturbed me most. My birth last name JFK, well who needs to translate that. It's kinda synonymous with deception and adultery.

And the good times keep rolling on in.

My middle name, which I hated since I could spell it, is Lee. I guess I can at least enjoy the cow part of my name.

Apparently my given name Sharon is a crap name that has practically dropped out of existence.

I attended high school with "Holly Day" and "Hollidae Cruise," so I feel guilty complaining about my own somewhat unusual last name. It's found in the dictionary of my ancestors' language, and a variation of it is probably in the Arabic dictionary. In my family, the names of my GF, my brother-in-law, and a few cousins all mean something in their respective ancestors' languages. (In my brother-in-law's case, it's edible.)

I used to wish that I had a more All-American sounding name, just for the sake of convenience. But demographics have changed in my area, and I run into more and more people who can pronounce my name correctly on the first try. Then, I have fun watching them try to wrap their minds around the fact that someone who looks as Anglo as I do could possibly be named [my real name.]:wink

While the meaning of my name isn't particularly silly, I have known some people with some really unusual names. I went to school with a girl named Candy Good and a boy named Randall Randall. The other kids really picked on him because of it too. I often wondered why his parents named him that. I also went to school with David Jones, who was referred to as Davy Jones as well as Davy Crockett. I knew of a girl in college named Spring Rain, which I thought was a pretty cool name. And I knew a guy named Justin Case. But digging into my family tree is where things start getting really interesting. My great grandmother who I knew personally (she just passed away in '98) had a very colorful name. Her name was Rose Green. But the prize for the most ridiculous name is a tie between two of my great great uncles. One was named Peter Dinger and the other Harry Dinger!

the meaning of my first name is prosperous and flourishing.

the meaning of my middle name (chinese name) is pure poetry

the meaning of my last name ... that's a bit difficult. My last name has a history but no real meaning. But my family name descents from one of the 5 ancient chinese kings.

Interesting thread. Names are fascinating.

The meaning of my last name originally referred to a place of high trees, like a landmark that could be seen from all over. I like trees, so I can live with that.

My first name means "chaste." My first middle name is derived from another name that means "might and power" and my second middle name is just a plant with red berries. (Don't eat them, though. While they have caffeine and I thank the gods daily for caffeine, as few as 20 berries can be a lethal dose. :governator ) But my mom went and spelled Holly with an extra letter, so perhaps that renders my name entirely meaningless. Holley is a company that makes, like, car parts or something.

I remember this kid in the fifth grade, his name was Keith Christmas and he was the class Smart Boy and I was the class Smart Girl and my fellow fifth graders amused themselves with fantasies about our marriage and my subsequent name of Holley Christmas. :rolleyes

Well, my first name translates as "lily" and while I like the image..... not sure it holds true. I'm not a flowery type person.

My formerly married name, which I gave back with the marriage, was a English word meaning group, so occasionally when I'd be working with people, I'd get the joke about the name. I would not want the focus of the group to be me, the focus was the mission of the group or the entire group... but people liked making the joke.

G, I think I've got the exact opposite of your name. The original family name in Norway was Dahle, which means valley. The place we are from is a valley in the middle of the Telemark district. US/Canadian Immigration gave part of our family that name, but my great-great-grandfather got the "son of" name.... (Actually in Norway at that time, there weren't "family" names, but it was starting to become more common.)

And I get to say that I'm actually a Crabtree. My father's mother's name was Crabtree & my aunt actually has that as her middle name. (she hates it) Watching the old "Little Rascal" movie shorts with the Miss Crabtree jokes was not really funny in our family.

Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely more… He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew.. and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!

lets see, there's, Aunt Fish

Aunt Nina (pronounced Nine-a),

Great Aunt Mut

and Cousin Turkey.

and to top things off, every one calls my mom Whop.

and if that's not bad enough.... my neice, who's only two has been called BooGa since she was a year old.

okay...so these are all nicknames...but believe me, Im not sure that they even know what their real names are.

Well, if you translate back into old french, then greek and finally hebrew, my last name means, "the Lord God." It also can be translated to mean Elf-Ruler.

My first name directly translates to "lady."

Not too shabby -- if I'm a "Lady Elf-Ruler," I must be related to Galadriel!!

A boy in my third grade had the last name "Fury." His father's name was Harry...

OK, so I don't know if this counts because it's a pet name and not a real name, but I thought it was too funny so..

There is a client I have who's last name is Myari. Her pet's name is Pussy. It's a cat.

Now, when we call a pet into the room for an appointment, we say the last name of the client, then the pet's name.

I had to say very loudly to a waiting room full of people...

' Myari Pussy is next' :lmao

If you don't get it, it sounds like your saying ' my hairy pussy'.

It was dead silent while the client, who is about 90 years old, got up and came into the room. When that door closed, the entire waiting room along with my co-worker, who is also one of my best friend's, burst out laughing. It took a lot of self control to keep a straight face the entire time I was with that client.

I'm :lmao now just thinking about it.

There were two kids I hated at school. If they married, the hyphenated result would be Small-Weiner.

Also, I once read an article about a woman who was being surrogate mother to a gay male couple, and her first name and last name were the same as mine. Considering I have a pretty uncommon name, it's weird.

My brothers are named Bernie and Ernie. From opposite sides of the family. My father is the Bernie side and my mother is the Ernie. When my younger brother was born, he was the first grandchild after my grandfather died so he got his name. Thank God he's a boy or he might have been Ernestine. Oh and by the way, my last name is Byrne. Therefore, we have Bernie Byrne and Ernie Byrne.

I've got you all beat. To fully translate my name in its various incarnations you get

Farmer-Pretty little girl, Frenchman, Humble Man

or

Farmer-God is gracious, " , "

depending on which meaning you take (guess which one I prefer)

also another translation if you take the variant on my full name is

Gracious Farmer, ", "

My family shield has a wheat field, a rock and a star

I like to think Humble Man = Peasant = Farmer

And guess what.....I grew up on a farm

In other funny name stories...My father told my mother that he would absolutely not ever have children with bible names....my brother's are Daniel and Jon :)

My family name is Anglo-Saxon in origin and was brought to Ireland in something like the twelfth century. Whew, that seems like just yesterday. Anyway, I am not exactly sure what it means. My sisters and I all have the middle names of Saints. Boy, did my mother miss the boat on that one!

On to the funny names. When I was a nubile, zit ridden, adolescent flirting with puberty a family named Tendick or the moved down the street from us. The Tendick's owned the local bakery. This was freaking hilarious to a thirteen year old. I also attended school with a family named Turnipseed. My cousin Kawana named her son Cannon after her horse that she had as a child.

In my sis class was a girl named: engel which means angel in english, but to have a name like Engel in germany well...u can say that SUCKS...cuz WTF got into her parents mind?
Than we have alot of Mercedes...which are more or less common, but still we have to get used to it..

My name isnt better! My mom told me that the translation means something like: born at christmas (Nathalie) and well my sis name (Bianca) means something like: the white one... but just the fact that i am the pale one from both of us means that my name should have been Bianca, no? Dont like that name anyway so THANK god that my name is Nathalie, even tho i dont like it that much either. :lol
