Lesbian songs?

While it's not specifically lesbian, I really like Hymn to Her as performed by Chrissie Hynde (w/ the Pretenders)

GG Dang! I used to listen to a radio show called "Woman-Soul" in the 80s. It had all kinds of "women's music"---most of it lesbian---back in the day... Out

That whole Cris Williamson, Meg Christian, Holly Near oeuvre (not that everybody likes that kind of thing---but it IS very dyke-y! :grin)

Damn, I wish I was your lover - Sophie B Hawkins.

And anything by the usual suspects: kd lang, Melissa Etheridge, Indigo Girls etc...

I think I'm the only person who has heard of Catie Curtis and Horse though, their stuff is distinctly dykey too.

nope, i live in dykey folk music capital... catie curtis is great.

girl on girl songs. hmm. check out melissa ferrick, mirah, erin mckeown, tegan and sara (if you can handle the scenesterness of them) rose polenzani, edie carey (those last two have at least a couple). i know candleshoe mentioned the indigo girls... they do an awesome cover of dire straits "romeo and juliet" which is one of my all time favorites.

that's all i'm coming up with off the top of my head. hope that helps.

I love Romeo and Juliet. The only other song I can think of where a woman is specifically singing about another woman is Claudia Christian's All Wrapped Up.

Jann Arden does a rather lovely rendition of the "unrequited love" song, "You Don't Know Me."

You think? Opinion is divided in my neck of the woods. Personally I prefer the original because I grew up with it, but that's just me! *shrug*.

I've never heard any of her stuff - don't tell Emms - but wouldn't Ani diFranco have something gender specific?

Songs that specifically refer to a "her", or women singing about women? Or just lesibian singers?

Anyway, here are specific suggestions:

Ani DiFranco - Shameless

Rickie Lee Jones - Jolie Jolie or her remake of Rebel Rebel

The Butchies (lesbian group) - Their remake of Your Love always makes me giggle.

Le Tigre (LBT group) - Hot Topic (not so much with the love songs, but all gay all the time).

The Nields do songs about women too. (Georgia O & Gottta Get over Greta)

Jill Sobule - I Kissed a Girl

I am sure I know more, but that is all my little brain can think of at the moment.
I am, you know.

May I suggest Under Your Spell?

Seriously, try Retsin (Tara Jane O'Neil and Cynthia Nelson) and Mirah.

I've seen Catie Curtis in concert a bunch, Candleshoe - she's great. Two songs of hers that are speaking directly to women are: Radical, and Elizabeth.

"gotta get over greta", good catch db! the nields are my all-time favorite band, how did i forget that one? the part about the husband always annoys me. but the best part from that song?:

But as for me I live in the fear I'll run into her down the line
It'll be the same thing, I'll shake and tremble
I'll lose myself, I'll remember, I'll remember

they've also got a more recent song called "when i let you into my closet" - but like "greta" it's more about young adolescent girls than grown-up lesbo love. i have to disagree with your classification of Georgia O as a lesbian song though. it's not a love song to o'keefe or any other woman for that matter (despite the reference to singing ani songs) and seems to be more about the narrator being inspired to do her art thing by o'keefe and women like her.

another i was thinking about is "good enough" by sarah mclachlan but that one's arguable.

the lovely candleshoe wrote:Personally I prefer the original because I grew up with it, but that's just me! *shrug*.

i didn't hear the original until after i'd heard the cover, so maybe that's why i'm partial to it. plus, amy ray wailing? it makes me weak.

the astute delwhicker wrote:Jann Arden does a rather lovely rendition of the "unrequited love" song, "You Don't Know Me."

that's such an awesome cover. it's on the "my best friend's wedding" soundtrack, yes? who doesn't love some unrequited love song anguish now and then? *runs off to download*

If you like more mainstream songs by a lesbian band, try the Halo Friendlies.

you've got a beautiful song "Mujer contra mujer" sung by Mecano, which was a big pop group in the 80's in Spain. Well it's more a neutral song but if you don't know it, it's worth listening to it. Here is the clip. Spanish lyrics here Here is the translation into English:
"Woman against Woman - There is nothing special when to women hold hands, the special comes after, when they do it under the table cloth, then when they are alone, nothing to loose, behind the hands, the rest of the skin. A love to hide though when naked there s no place to hide it, they disguise it as friendship, when they go for a walk in the city, One says that that s not right, the other says : oh well..., what others say is irrelevant Who stops the flying doves, flying so low in the ground, Woman agaisnt Woman, I wont be the one to throw the first stone, if ever I get it wrong, and surprise them lips to lips in the big room, I wouldnt even dare caughing, If I dont like it, I know what I have to do, As with my stones they are building their own wall.., Who stops the flying doves, when flying low so near the ground, Woman against Woman...."

Otherwise, you have the Russian band "Tatu", even if... which sang: "All the things she said", "Ya Soshla S Uma" ("I've lost my mind, I've lost my mind, I need her, I need her, I have lost my mind, I need her.")

I'll try to find more titles...

Jorja Fox's Satellite. It's in the High Fidelities section of herofficial website. Some of the lyrics are hard to hear, but they pretty much go:
I met a girl, she turned my world
upside down
Met a girl, she blew my mind
Everything feels fine

Met a girl, took her for a whirl
And we got lost in time
Great big world, outside my door
It really is, a long, long fall
To the ground
We are flying in slow motion

I love you baby, you know it's true
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I love the way you ...
You're right, you're right, you're right

If I gave myself, gave myself to you
Would you catch my fall?
Would you wrap your arms around me?
If I said, If I told you so
That love was true, would you run and hide?
Would you sit right down, by my side
and kiss away
broken together

I love the way you ...
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I love the shadow around my summer nights
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
i love you baby, you know its true
It's alright, it's alright it's alright
i love the way you ...
You're right, you're right, you're right
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright

Even though KT Tunstall isn't a lesbian, I really think her song "Heal over" is about a woman loving another woman, to me it is anyway. :)

"Heal Over"

It isn't very difficult to see why
You are the way you are
Doesn't take a genius to realise
That sometimes life is hard
It's gonna take time
But you'll just have to wait
You're gonna be fine
But in the meantime

Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you'll heal over
Heal over
Heal over someday

And I don't wanna hear you tell yourself
That these feelings are in the past
You know it doesn't mean they're off the shelf
Because pain's built to last
Everybody sails alone
But we can travel side by side
Even if you fail
You know that no one really minds
Come over here lady

Don't hold on but don't let go
I know it's so hard
You've got to try to trust yourself
I know it's so hard, so hard

Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you'll heal over, heal over, heal over someday
Imagine

My experience with iTunes is that they have these artists (except for some), and, if you don't like listening to entire albums, you can just buy the specific songs. iTunes isn't that great on a PC, but if you have a Mac, it really can't be beat.

I'd heard of her - she's British and I'm sure I had a CD single by her from many years ago.

And thanks to this thread, I dug out my Catie Curtis album which I had forgotten I had (the one with Soulfully) and it's great (Memphis in particular).

Well, hello there KNO! In rooting around the internet for the link today I discovered that the band had ..um..dis-banded. What a shame!

Although I did wonder why I hadn't seen any adverts for her gigs in Diva for a while :lol

Melissa E. covering Joan Armatrading's ~The Weakness in Me. This had a video that is almost impossible to find, it was an all women cast, one of the very few outright "lesbian" video's Melissa ever did.

Jamie Anderson's~Dark Chocolate

Queen Pen & Me'Shell Ndegeocello's~Girlfriend

Melissa Ferrick~Drive

Bif Naked~Lucky

I always thought this sounded very lesbian,
Beth Orton~Central Reservation

Running down a central reservation in last night's red dress,
And I can still smell you on my fingers and taste you on my breath;
Stepping through brilliant shades,
All the color you bring,
This time, this time, this time,
Is whatever I want it to mean.

And for a laugh, NoFX~Liza And Louise
Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from a religious conviction.

I would LOVE to list "Ain't Life a Brook" by Ferron, but "technically" that one falls under "gender neutral"...:/

Hrmmm...I oughta write a lesbian song. The closest I've come is in a song I wrote called "I Manage", where I refer to "topless nights 'till 6 a.m."

I'll have to see what I can come up with...;)
