When you were a kid what did you want to be?

I was with my nephew the other day and it got me thinking about life and how I am nearly 24 and little Lucas is new to the world and he can be whatever he wants and has his whole life ahead of him and I wondered what he will be like as he grows up and what his ambitions will be. Also at the time my sisters friends 2 kids were also there and on of them Caroline-Elizabeth, (Lizzy I call her because my name is Caroline to save confusion.) and she was talking about growing up and how she can't wait till she is 6 because she will be allowed a piece of Bubblegum and the conversation prgressed onto being a "grown up" and what it was like and I said " You should be a doctor when you grow up because then you can treat your mummy and yourself and your little brother to lots of nice things" and she said "I am a doctor, I have forgotten my stuff it is at home" and I laughed and she told me how she wanted to be a ballet dancer too and I said how she could be a "Ballet dancer by day and doctor by night" It made me wonder at a child's imagination and I thought I would start this thread just because it is interesting as kids how the sjy is the limit. Did any of you manage to make your child-hood job a reality.

I wanted to be an Author and still am working on it and a make up artist or an actress. My brother wanted to be a Police officer ( he isn't now lol)

I wanted to be a fighter-pilot in the Air Force, although as I grew up I realised that neither my hearing nor my eyesight were perfect enough...and the New Zealand Air Force got rid of its fighter squadron about 6 years ago so there wouldn't have been any point!

When I was 10 I wanted to be a lawyer and I now have my law degree (although I don't practice) so I kind of followed that one through.

I think my current career (museum curator) was always more of an interest rather than an intended career choice but hey, it happened and that'c cool, although things today just aren't old and dusty enough to truly satisfy me, the museum I work in is just much too clean and sanitised!

The last time I was at my parent's house, I found a memory book from when I was in the first grade and I had written that I wanted to be a musician or a music teacher. So now, I'm a musician and a music teacher, so I guess I had it figured out pretty early. That's pretty cool.

I wanted to be a couple of things when I grew up. After I saw Jurassic Park for the first time when I was 8, I wanted to be a Paleontologist.

A year or two later, I decided I didn't want to do anything. I sort of followed through on that for a year and a half after high school.

During High School, I also wanted to be an English teacher in Japan. I halfway did that, sort of. I taught Japanese at a language immersion camp here in MN. It was a great experience, I'd like to do it again sometime, or actually still teach English in Japan.

Now, I work on computers for a living. Building them and fixing them. I guess it was sort of a good choice since I've always been a nerd. When I was a kid, I built computers for fun. It's not too fun to me now, but it pays the bills.

I also wanted to be a writer, and I'm still working on that. Just not in the capacity I thought I would be. I write scripts for myself instead of short stories. Now, I want to make movies. I also want to be a professional musician. There's so much I want to do, but not enough time to do it.

As a child, I wanted to be Batman ... and for a few years there I actually thought I was. I wouldn't answer my parents unless they called me "Batman," which - in hindsight - was probably not the smartest way to preserve my secret identity.

I don't recall specifically being interested in any other profession. On Career Day back in elementary school, I think I wanted to be an engineer just because my father was one. I even started as an engineering major in college ... but switched to English after my first year.

I was always interested in Japan, though, even from a very young age. It never occurred to me growing up that I might actually go there one day ... let alone learn the language, marry a Japanese girl, and end up working in the Japanese auto-industry.


Should the opportunity present itself, however, I still wouldn't mind being Batman.

growing up i wanted to be a pilot and astronaut, but by the time i hit 14 or 15 i knew there was no way i had the math and science ability and was starting to have issues with joining the military for political reasons. at that point i set my sights on journalism. but when i was in college i decided i'd rather be making news, not reporting it.

when i was a tiny kid i had habit of closing up my fisher price record player, which was like a little suitcase, and walking around with it like it was a briefcase and standing behind my little wooden rocking chair pretending it was a podium and giving speeches (sometimes the preamble, or the gettysburg address, or whatever i heard on tv). when i was two and my mom would ask me to do something i would answer with "let's compromise." so it's fitting that i ended up a lawyer but i actually didn't aspire to this until my early 20s.

when I was a little kid I wanted to be a carpenter...I was always building things and taking things apart and rebuilding them...but my parents told me that girls couldn't be carpenters...assholes!

I used to want to be a teacher. And I guess I still do in a way. I taught three years in college as a graduate assistant or teaching assistant (getting to lecture and have full responsibility) and I enjoy conducting trainings now. But of course my job pays loads better than teaching full time. I kind of figure when I'm retired in my 50s, I can be a teacher then.

I weighed several career options, but I distinctly remember wanting to be a garbage man for quite a while. Or garbage woman. Or whatever. It just looked so fun, riding on the back of the big truck and seeing all the wild stuff on the curb.

Then later: Meteorologist. realised i needed physics n math, so had to leave that one well alone

The first thing I ever remember wanting to be when I was a child, I must have been six or seven, and I was a determined little girl that I was absolutely going to be the first ever lawyer/soccer star/skateboarding champion combination ever. I dropped the lawyer after a few years, and the skateboarding too, even though I still board sometimes. The soccer part stuck with me enough that its my favorite sport and I still play a lot but at about 12 my goals changed. I discovered purely through an odd twist of fate that I had a knack for writing. Lyrics in general. So I started writing, and writing and finally branching into more than just lyrics, soon I was writing all the time, a million different things. Ten years later, my dream is still to be that writer one day, and its working for me. Been published a few times and I'm working on the final edits for a book. Hopefully someone reads it and models a fic after it one day LOL. Course I don't know how they would know it was me.

My childhood years had me yearning to be a Vet - more specifically a Vet working for ranches. I loved horses so much (still do lol).
Later on, thoughts matured and I harboured serious hopes of becoming a Neurologist.

Today, I'm in the field of Psychology - funny how drastic a change that was...but still one of the best choices I made .

Through-out my whole teenage years and early collage years I wanted to be a doctor. In my early twenties, my life took an unexpected turn and I started to study Psychology. So every since then, I took that path, and loved every moment of it.

I wanted to be a truck driver. Not really very surprising taken that many of my relatives (including my dad and granddad on mothers side) are or have been truckers. At one point I wanter to drive Formula 1. That didn't happen of course, but even today I sort of like driving a car.

The idea of becoming a physicist occurred to during high school. I think that Back to the Future -trilogy had something to do with that. I've always liked and been good at math though so the idea didn't very much surprise me or my family.

Let's see: in elementary school, I wanted to be a sea captain or an archaeologist. In junior high, I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer. In my freshman year of high school, I thought that I'd rather be a high school English teacher.

I ended up majoring in music performance in college and becoming a professional musician.
