Small Research Project

Postby Millerchip77 » Mon Oct 10, 2011 6:12 pm

Hi all,

I was once a VERY active member of this site - I am sad to say that life has meant that I have not been able to be so active over the past couple of years.

However I am back now...and I currently work at a university in Australia (even though I am English) and I recently attended a conference on female superheroes - Buffy featured heavily. Anyway - the organisers of the conference have invited me to submit a paper and, well, it has been a dream of mine for years to write a paper about this site. It will focus upon the Kittenboard as a site of resistance against the lesbian=death/madness myth and also as a community of practice - given that we get and give feedback to each others' work.

I wondered what you all though of this - and whether anyone would object to me using excerpts from their fics.

Thanks and very best Willow & Tara wishes,

Emily

Hi Emily, nice to see you here on the kitten again!

This project sounds very interesting. if you would like to get some insight from members I can recommend several peeps to contact. No guarantees but perhaps one or two would be willing to help with this. Most, I’m sure you are familiar with: Xita, our Kitten founder, of course :D, JustSkipIt, Katharyn, Laragh, WebWarlock, EasierSaid, Wayland, SylverMaki and the other moderators: Foomatic and Willowtree252.

You might also want to check out the responses from our Ten Year Anniversary contest

Fic excerpts will require permission from the individual authors.

Best of luck on your project –you picked a great subject! :wtkiss

Millerchip - Welcome back. Yes, I'd be open to whatever questions you have and you can use excerpts from my fic. One thing though - I would make using excerpts opt-in rather than opt-out. In other words, don't ask if anyone objects. Assume everyone objects unless they give you permission. You might send out some PMs if you have authors in mind.

That sounds like a very interesting project, Millerchip77!! Who wouldn't dream to be able to work on Buffy and this site? I took two classes in college solely because they refered to Buffy and Joss Whedon, lol. Good luck with everything!! :)

Well I am so happy at getting so many responses already!! It may well have kick-started me back into obsessively answering threads about what music I'm listening to and what I'm having for tea as well as finishing that couple of fic's I started a while back...

So Kajun - thank you so much for the tips - I will definitely follow them up. And Justskip it - hey!! How's life? And you are right - I should have worded that request better - so definitely an opt-in to the inclusion of writers' work.

Gaga01 I have been dreaming about doing this paper for AGES...but I was finishing my PhD then moving continent and blah and so now I finally have the time.

Laragh thanks! I will be in touch soon.

Now I have to write an ethics application :(

But I will be back very soon - forms+me=distractions welcome.

Ok, another old timer here.
I have been on and off trying to write a history of the kitten and/or my spoiler days for a while. I would love to touch base with you sometime.

Hi Emily,

I've been around for about a year and love what you're doing in sharing the KB!

I'd love to read your finished project if that is even remotely possible, talk with the Mods, maybe it could be posted? No idea, they are the ones that would know.

I've only done two stories "Courage" in the completed fics archive under Ariel and How I Met Your Mother, currently active on the board. My story ranges from kind of wacky humor to dealing with secrets and abuse issues - if any of that helps, you have my permission to use it.

Thanks,

Ariel

Hello again,

Just to let you know that I got ethical approval through from my university today to run the project!! This is fantastic news and I am very excited about the project. Thanks so much to those of you who have expressed an interest in participating - I will be in touch soon.

Until then happy holidays - it is my first Christmas in Australia this year (I am English and have, since I moved here, gone back to freeze). It is going to be 40+ degrees (c) on Sunday and my partner's father cooks a traditional roast. Think of me....

Best wishes,

Emily (Millerchip77)

Excellent news, Emily, well done!

Have a good Christmas in the sun - my other half (another Kitten - this board really has brought people together) made the reverse journey three years ago and hasn't quite got used to opening gifts in the cold!

Yes, indeed we did meet here. We've been married for nearly three years now and the hatred and despair hasn't set in yet...

We *must* talk more then. I love those kinds of stories for the history!

Hi all,

I am back after rather a hot and hectic festive season. I will be taking a week or two to do some reading and them will be back with updates on the research and hopefully a questionnaire.

@Candleshoe - Christmas was red hot here! We had a crazy storm in the afternoon of Christmas day. We were driving back from my partner's dad's place in the country towards Melbourne and there were some very close lightning strikes! So cool that you met here :)

@WebWarlock - thanks for the interest - I will PM you soon.

Anyway - back to the grindstone. My work inbox is out of control...

:)

And Melbourne's at the cold end too! I went over for Christmas in Canberra the year I brought Mudrat back with me and it was really too hot for me, I'm so very English...

Give me a shout if you think I can contribute in any way...

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't given you a research update for so long. I have been busy reading and also planning my classes as we start teaching in 2 weeks! That came around quickly. Anyway I hope to have a questionnaire done by the end of the weekend so watch this space. I am still hugely excited about this project and am very grateful for your input...if you're ever in Melbourne I know a great comic shop and some great bars....

Anyway - in haste and be in touch soon,

Emily (millerchip)
