Yes, missed Paris this week too. When I noticed she wasn't in the opening credits this week, I was a little bummed. But Lane more than made up for it. I loved her dying her hair purple, then freaking out and dying it back. So totally Lane. And just for the record, her mom scares me. She'd send her daughter to Nicaragua for college just to keep her away from boys???? Fear Mama Lane...Just fear.

Makes me look forward to the confrontation you just know she's going to have with Lane about the band and the boy in the band. Maybe she'll actually lighten up a little. Not too much though, cause then she wouldn't be as funny :) .

As for Smallville, I totally noticed that Chloe/Lana thing too. I mean, there was nothing behind Chloe that I could see that would make her brush up against Lana like that.

This week's NotBuffy! TV Report...

Postby Italiangirl » Wed Oct 16, 2002 11:48 pm

So, just got finished watching this week's ep of Birds of Prey, and last night's ep of Gilmore Girls. Here are this week's comments...

Gilmore Girls...

Fabulous and funny as always! Unfortunately, I had VCR issues and did not catch the episode teaser before the credits rolled, could anyone give me a recap? Thanks in advance.

Regarding the episode, Lane was outstanding this time around! I'm happy to see the seeds of rebellion begin to germinate in her head. I too am hoping for a confrontation before the season is through. During the entire hair-dye sequence, I kept thinking "no way will she go through with it," and then, when she did, and came out of the room with that delicious purple hair, I must admit to doing a little dance in my chair.

Regarding Lorelei, I was disappointed at Luke's reaction to her getting in the hot seat. He was clearly amused by it, which I thought was insensitive. I think as much as Lorelei jokes around, a part of her is very sensitive and feels like a failure for getting pregnant at 16 [think of that scene last season in Rory's Dance where Emily yells to Lorelei that Rory will ruin everything because she is just like Lorelei, and Lorelei yells "no she's not, no she's not, no she's not...she's a GOOD kid, mother."] I wanted Luke to jump in and have her back, instead of laughing at her. Then, he did it again when she got ambushed by the hair club for women. And, eeeeek, how scary were they? I wanted Lorelei to go off on them more than she did.

I thought Rory was hilarious when she was being so rude to Shane at the beauty store. We don't see that side of Rory often enough, IMHO. Also, I thought Jess's comments about love were intersting, especially when he called Luke out on being Lorelei's beck and call man but never making a move. I hope that things heat up between them this season.

NOW, FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT...

About Birds of Prey. It was better overall this week, I thought. The pace was faster, the dialogue better. I thought the special effects with Liquid Guy aka Slick were well done, and the set design looked less fake and cheesy. Overall, much improved.

That said, I think it was Dinah's week to be the less likeable one. Last week she was cool as a cucumber, competent, and mature. This week she was too much of an attention starved and headstrong kid. They redeemed her in the last ten minutes when she appeared and helped out Helena with Liquid Guy, but overall her dialogue and mannerisms were forced and immature. Also, what's up with the being grounded? I'm not liking that aspect of their relationship, I don't think any of the three should be the junior partner. Finally, the breaking down crying bit at the end, with the "true confessions" between Dinah and Barbara and Helena did not ring true to me. It was too neat a resolution to an obviously complicated situation.

Helena was more likeable this week, and Barbara was just as fabulous as she was last week. I like that her character is smart, and competant, and feminine, and differently abled, and normal, all at the same time. She's very human, and very feminine in an emotional way, and I like that about her.

I'm definately going to keep watching.

Another good GG's ep this week. Loved the hair dying rebellion- too bad Lane didn't go through with it. And yeah, I think there's a major blow-up a'comin' between Lane and her mother.

Absolutely *loving* West Wing so far this season, too.

You know people, at this point ANYTHING is better than Buffy. Gilmore Girls, West Wing, anything.... That's so sad to say but right now it's true. I don't see much signs for improvement either. It's tragic really...

I saw the new Birds of Prey last night, on tape since Wednesday is my choir night. Not bad. Still not up to full speed yet, I think, but they're definitely laying the groundwork for some interesting things coming up.

The weepy scene at the end was a little after-school-special-ish, but I can live with that. I've heard some spoilers about where Dinah really comes from, and they're pretty interesting. They're definitely setting up something with Helena and Harlie, too.

All in all, the show is still showing signs of a great potential ahead of them. I hope they can pull it off.

I finally got caught up on Gilmore Girls.

I loved the PTA moms. In the first scene with Debbie / Deb - my partner says to me "hey that sweater she's wearing is from Talbots I saw it there last week"

I thought it was hilarious when the gang of PTA moms in their Talbots outfits and matching hair ambushed Lorelei.

Of course it made me realize that I need to be careful the next time I go shopping at Talbots.

I love the way GG pokes fun at people in a broad enough way so as not to offend anyone in particular, but still manages to hit home enough to make one a little uncomfortable.

Yeah, the second episode of Birds of Prey was much better than the first. Not sure I like the fact that cop is in on everything from the very beginning, but it's early on in the show, so I'm willing to see where they go with it. I admit, I rolled my eyes a little at the end when Dinah broke down. Just felt a tad forced to me. But I liked the dynamics between the characters this week, and am looking forward to seeing the show grow into it's own in the coming weeks. I know I said this last week, but I feel it needs repeating. Mia. Sara. Rocks.

Also, wanted to plug American Dreams a little. So far, I feel like it's the best new show of the season. Brittany Snow is just amazing as Meg, and her best friend, Roxanne is a riot. If you like Gilmore Girls, you should give this show a try. What I like most about it is that they are doing a great job of showing the different struggles of the 60's, and not just telling you about them. Plus, the music is just kick ass. So if you find yourself at home on Sunday at 8, give this show a shot.

Me, too. I agree that the way they are playing Cordy/Angel is pretty forced and lacking chemistry, but I have to give them props for the Dark Wesely storyline.

Anyway, since "Firefly" got 2.7/5 in the overnights last night, Tim Minear, who is my favorite "Angel" writer, will hopefully hop back over to "Angel".

Angel

Postby slowontheuptake » Sat Oct 19, 2002 4:11 pm

Aparently they fired the writer who came up with the whole Saintly Cordy thing (thank God) and are taking steps to rectify it. I'm also under the impression that the Angel/Cordy ship will never happen. I hope I'm right.

IMO Angel is the best it's ever been right now. The Dark Wes storyline is fantastic! This is the first time I've truly enjoyed Wes. Then again, the only time I liked Angel was when he was all evil.:hmm

They better bring back Snarky Cordy. I miss her muchly :( . I do know Lorne will be showing up soon. I loooove Lorne!

It's sad when the spinoff of my once favorite show is now better than said show. Yet I hold on till the bitter end cause I love the charactors no matter how thouroughly butchered (figuratively) they become .

Well, at least I have Angel to fall back on...

I think for UK kittens Tipping the Velvet is pretty much a given. If you haven't seen it yet...go watch it!

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Birds of Prey and Gilmore Girls... if/when they ever make their way to UK shores. :(

As for my own recommendations, first Stargate SG-1. I love it, good old sci-fi at its best. Plus it's a bonus that I'm a Sam/Janet shipper so looking out for subtext between these two characters is always fun. ;)

Also, I've recently begun watching Judging Amy, which has been showing on Channel 4 on weekday afternoons. I realize it may be a couple of years behind (since the date stamp at the end of the eps I'm watching is 2000), and I have no idea if this show is still airing across the pond, but I think this is a great show. It's got amazing drama, wonderful humour, and... Tyne Daly (who I always loved in Cagney and Lacey). Not to mention Judge Amy herself... :shy

I would still watch Angel if I felt like I could trust Joss. Unfortunately, I don't. He called Charisma Carpenter "a big part of the heart of the show," and we all know what that means.

My hope is that the show will get to rerun season without too much Jossian destruction happening, and I can catch it then. Until that happens, though, it's either Alias or SG-1 (older episodes on my local UPN station) for me.

I understand your feelings, Bob, but for the moment at least I still judge the shows on whether or not I enjoy them and I still enjoy Angel.

I also think that if Cordy leaves it will be because Charisma Carpenter wants off the show (if you can believe the gossip about personal problems). I hope she doesn't, because as far as I'm concerned Whedon is more right than he knows--not only is she a big part of the heart of this show, but she was of "Buffy" as well, and never really adequately replaced (Anya--echh.). In case I haven't mentioned it (and why would I, here?), I love, love, love Cordy and have since the first time I saw "....Hellmouth."

If her character is written out in "Jossian destruction..." that would probably be the event that gets me where some of the other Kittens are, unwilling to even entertain the notion of watching another of JW's shows.

Well, I wish I could still enjoy Angel (much like I wish I could still enjoy Buffy) but...

I hated where they took things towards the end of last season. I can't stomach the idea of C/A.

And two, not trusting Joss as far as I can throw him... it's hard for me to enjoy Angel when I'm wondering what thing I like/love about the show he'll totally trash next. I just don't trust ME enough to stay invested in any of their shows.

Re: Angel

Postby Killin Joke » Sun Oct 20, 2002 7:58 am

I watched "Offspring" yesterday. You know, the ep, where a pregnant Darla shows up at Angel Investigation's door. I must say - it's been building up for quite some time now - that I've come to enjoy Angel more than Buffy. Of course I've seen everything up till B's "Same time, same place" and only read some Angel spoilers, seen those eps as they come on my tv-screen, but to me: Angel's proven itself to be more than just a spin-off, but a series that's capable to stand on its own, has grown out of B's shadow.

But apart from that, as dark as Angel might have been (in the beginning), darker than Buffy at first, I still feel that show has a heart, maybe because Cordy's still on it, at least as I type this, over here. It's bloody unbelievable: I used to hate her character for being so insensitive and superficial, and mean to the other Scoobies (especially Willow), though I did admire the humour of it all, but now she still has this edge BUT has evolved to this real beautiful (in every sense of the word) human being. I mean, she still has her fashion sense and lil caprices, but she endures the most horrible visions, because she truly wants to help people. Once more with feeling, people. That's something I missed on Buffy for quite some time now. I remember a scene when Cordy got down on her knees to listen to a heartbroken Fred in a corner, who had just seen 'Angel' making out with Lilah, and thought: wow, she really "cares". I dunno about you kittens, but in my book that's really worth something.

Like I said: dunno what's gonna happen next, and I'm well aware I shouldn't get attached to Cordy, being part of the "heart of the show" , but as we speak I think Cordy's the only one who could feel real compassion towards Willow (I mean, she was willing to help out Darla, for ?'s sake).

I kinda like Fred too, because she show some earlier treats of Willow and Tara I miss...

Gilmore Girls goes abroad

Postby BasilGray » Sun Oct 20, 2002 8:02 am

Last Saturday, the first episode of Gilmore Girls was shown in Portugal. I really liked it, it reminded me that TV can still be funny and... well, nice :) The second episode was shown yesterday, and it was even better! I'm definitely a fan! Will there be any DVDs? I really, really need DVDs of such a great show!! :) ))

I've been watching Birds of Prey, Alias, and Angel and charmed. (still watching Buffy too, but this is the wrong thread to talk about that. ;) )

I like BOP so far, and it looks like it will last the season. I hope they won't ruin it with any ships though.

Sunday 10/20

Postby BBOvenGuy » Mon Oct 21, 2002 11:45 am

I thought Charmed had a really good episode last night. They weren't quite as goofy as usual, and they continued to develop some of the character arc themes they've been working with for a while.

They also introduced the gypsy doctor character, who I really like. I hope they make the part a recurring one, because she fills a lot of needs. Now Piper has a doctor who understands the witchy side of her life, and with Paige helping out in the doctor's clinic project she now has a way to use her social worker talents when she's not battling demons. Plus the gypsy doctor is pretty cute. ;)

I also thought it was interesting to see Phoebe dealing with the stresses of her newfound success. Even without Cole around, she's got a mess of things to deal with. The new enhancements to her premonition power are pretty cool, too.

I must make one confession, though - when the demon was using the Evil Eye to send energy bolts right through people, I kept expecting someone to say, "Your shirt!" :

My 9:00 hour continues to be split between Alias and SG-1. Last night SG-1 won the battle for my attention, but not as convincingly as last week. I'm still sitting on the fence. I suppose I could just tape one of the shows and watch it later, but that would make too much sense... :shy

Re: Angel/ American Dreams

Postby slowontheuptake » Mon Oct 21, 2002 4:43 pm

On the Angel discussion.

IMO Cordy would never be killed off the show unless Charisma wanted to leave. Central charactors on the two shows are almost always in it for the long haul. On Angel that means Angel, Cordy and possibly Wes. On Buffy it has always meant Willow, Buffy, Xander and Giles (even though ASH wanted to move to England, he was not offed). Only peripheral charactors have an experation date.

As far as the Gunn/Fred thing goes, they are slightly less annoying this year. Although I've never particularly liked Fred she is improving with time.

May I just reiderate how much i love the Bad Seed Wes storyline. It is even now filling me with maniacal giggles.

Other stuff.

I am watching American Dreams but mostly because it fills the gap between first season Gilmore Girls an Angel. I think Charmed shows at 8 and I've never been able to get into it. I find AD kind of emotionally manipulative. It was obviously created as a direct result of 9/11. On the other hand, it is written well and has good charactors. I honestly give it another four eps before it starts pissing me off and I give up on it.

Word of mouth does wonders

Tonight......I got 8 people to watch Gilmore Girls....including 2 buffy viewers.

My gf loves the show...she's seen it like twice, and doesn't usually get into TV shows. quote "I love this show...it's so funny and cozy." And having the show set in CT is a plus!Though I find myself laughing everytime they talk about Hartford like it's some big exciting city...because there is absolutly nothing to do there.LOL

Yep GG it is at my house. Trying to get caught up on what's actually going on. So we're really watching the Sunday night 1st season.

American Dreams: I still don't know what to think about that show. There are some parts I like. However, I usually find myself wishing the father would just die. I can't stand his character. I think the show has a good concept, though I wish they would get into some serious issues that happened during the 60's not all this bf/gf garbage. It seems like everyone on this show is boy crazy.

Alias- Rocks IMO
