I have to say that this has become oa family favourite in my house. I have thoroughly enjoyed both episodes so far and will be very sad when the thrid episode has finished because then its over :( . On the upside, the more lesbian TV I get my parenst to watch the more confident I am that the really do accept my life. My mum even wants me to get her the book!

Well like some other kittens , I enjoyed the second episode but not as much as the first. While I found the changes and omissions in the first episode worked well and stayed faithful to the mood, characters and storyline of the novel I was uncomfortable with some of the changes in this episode. I wasn't sure about the way they initially played Nan's work as a rent boy almost as burlesque until the client that attempted to rape her and I hated that they added this scene and made it integral to Nan's first meeting with Diana. In the book she is streetwise and very careful about which clients she goes with and keeps herself out of trouble. I felt the TV show presented her more as a victim needing to be rescued. I also thought the show subtly altered the dynamic between Diana and Nan, made it less interesting and disturbing and Diana herself less complex and formidable.

That said I still really liked it (though the voice over and camera work were beginning to irritate me; sometimes they were trying too hard so that it distracted rather than added to the storytelling). Some fantastic scenes, great visuals and great acting. I missed Kitty/Keeley Hawes but found Anna Chancellor had a very compelling presence and I loved the scenes beween Nan and Zena, the maid. And then there were the sex scenes and of course, Monsieur Dildo...

Looking forward to the final part and hoping the small change in the ending really is just a small change.

Yeah, this "small change" in the ending has me a bit worried too. I've not read the book yet, so I've no idea how the story is supposed to end...but I'm completely wary of it now, especially after having read the episode description in this week's Radio Times:
Quote:
When Nan and Zena are thrown out by Diana, Zena disappears with all the money. Nan is then taken in by Florence, but her happiness is short-lived.
It's the words "happiness" and "short-lived" in the same sentence that makes me paranoid that we're going to see yet another dead lesbian on-screen...:(

And after I was really beginning to enjoy this drama too. :

i read a small review of part 3 on the weekend and it said there would be a happy ending. The book has a happy ending. I think the "small change" issue will just mean which happy ending will they go for, will they stick with the book or go for another option, if you know what I mean!!? Personally I reckon they'll stick with the book and that comment was just to keep people interested and intrigued.

I love Keeley.

Kat Whisperer: I don't want to give anything away, buy don't worry, I don't think there will be any dead lesbians on this TV show. See, Sarah Waters, the author, and hopefully Andrew Davies, the screenwriter, have imagination and courage, and manage to avoid too many cliches... Waters allows her characters to have a range of experiences, and fates, rather than simply the punishment, death and insanity that tend to be the order of the death for more on-screen lesbians.. I would explain how different this was to BtVS if it wasn't so glaringly obvious!

i was reading The Guide that comes with The Guardian at the weekend and it said something about Nan "topping the bills i music halls once again" hopefully this is the small change and everything else remains the same. Although this does kinda give me the feeling that we might get the not-of-the-book happy ending if you know what i mean?

funny, I just read that only half an hour ago and thought the same thing. I do think they'll stick with the book happy ending though, although I wouldn't mind the alternate one! When I read the book it was the perfect ending, but with the programme I'm not so clear....... if that makes any sense!?

Well, I personally thought the book ended exactly as it should in regards to these characters. It'll be interesting to see what they have changed. I hope the didn't change what I think they did that's for sure!

I SO want the book ending. I can't imagine it ending any other way and Nan ending up any place else. Although I've seen clips and now why people would want it to end differently... jeez, this is hard to talk about when you don't want to spoil anyone...

I don't know.. I feel like any other ending would be a like a step back for Nan... does that make sense???

The BBC's website has a competition to win Tipping the Velvet stuff. I think it may only be open to UK people, so check the terms & conditions before entering:

Frank Skinner Show

Postby tommo » Tue Oct 22, 2002 3:35 pm

Rachel Stirling has just been on The Frank Skinner Show and she's absolutely delightful. Very bawdy and funny and yes, swoonworthy. :)

She talked about two things that made me laugh. The first was about the scene when Nan meets Diana Letharby for the first time, and Diana pulls the handkerchief from Nan's trousers (her would-be penis, heh). Rachel Stirling explained that she was keen on doing her own props and stuff, and in that scene there was an over the shoulder shot of her face as Anna Chancellor was pulling the handkerchief out. She said that she'd forgotten to put the hankie in there, and wasn't wearing any knickers either. And Anna Chancellor was there, tugging away and her eyes were watering. The director shouted cut and asked what was going on and Rachel Stirling squeaked out "My pubes! She was pulling on my pubes!" :lol

The second thing I liked was at the end of the interview, Frank Skinner asked her what "tipping the velvet" actually means. Rachel Stirling explained that, in the words of Ali G, it meant "rug munching", heh, and that it was (and she pulled a lovely face here) "Mmm mmm". Sigh. Anyway, our Frank commented that it had never felt like velvet to him, and Rachel said that perhaps he wasn't tipping the right velvet.

Love that woman.

Anyway, he did ask her about reactions from the lesbian community and she said that she hadn't heard any reaction yet. But she did mention that she (or someone from the show anyway) was going to do a gay festival in Seattle, so she hoped that she'd hear some feedback then.

I have to say, she's absolutely lovely. She comes across as a really fun-loving and great person. Frank made a comment about Kitty saying that Nan "smelled like a mermaid" and how it wasn't the best chat up line in the world. Rachel was very defensive of it though, and insisted that it was a moment of true romance between the characters. She also said that she was hoping reactions to the drama wouldn't be too diverse, as it was a really important book. But she did feel that some people (and I guess she meant lesbians here) might have thought the BBC played up the titillation too much, or made too much of a drama of it, rather than concentrating on the romance and the true-isms of the story itself.

Anyhoo, just thought I'd give you all a heads up. :)

Good lord, I haven't seen any of the miniseries yet, and I already love this actress. Hee. That's just delightful.

The right velvet indeed.

Edited to add, good lord. I've been so excited about losing my Vixenish virginity, and here I am already three posts into my Vixenhood. And didn't even notice it. Hee. I'm a Vixen. And now I have proof. Whee! ;)

I've just finished parts 1 and 2 and I can hardly wait for the 3rd part.

I have to say that I'd much prefer the happy ending contained in the book to any other ending they could come up with.

Thanks to Tasha who made it possible for me to see Tipping the Velvet in the first place. :)

Tommo thanks so much for that! I caught about 2 seconds of it (ample time to assess that rachael's a pretty cool chick!). I thought it might be repeated on itv2 but it's not, so it was a delight to come on here and read your little bit!

Can I ask though ...... when I saw the show again Mylene was on it and she appeared to be crying ... what was all that about!? I couldn't watch I had to run away, I get embarrassed easily by these things. Never coped at all well with Blind Date and the Judy Finnegan bra incident ....... well...

Mylene was crying because Hear'say have split up and people were calling her a bitch. And yes, it was uncomfortable, particularly as Rachel Stirling was so at ease with everything only moments before.

Rachel Stirling seems really nice, and is a great example of genetics. Just a shame they've already done an Avengers film (and one that was so bad it killed off the chance for any more).

I feel really bad for Myleene though. It wasn't just that people were verbally abusing her (and her family), but she lost it when she was asked about being molested on the street a couple of days earlier. And all because she was in a manufactured pop band.

you forgot to mention the bit with the dildo tommo ;) apparantly she kept the dildo and uses it as a coat hanger because it's the only thing that carries the weight of her Afghan coat, hehehe.

Yeah, I saw Rachael Stirling on the Frank Skinner show too. Didn't manage to catch the whole thing (also, Frank Skinner annoys the crap out of me), but she was pretty funny and she looked lovely.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the last episode tonight. To reassure people, Sarah Waters was happy with the way that Andrew Davies had adapted the book - I'm sure she wouldn't have been if he'd added in the usual cliches. But we'll see.
