Huh. I have absolutely no idea what sort of policy there is with making films out of books. I have a sense that people buy the rights to "adapt" a book for screen so then they can do whatever they want. I don't know about any specifics though.

I'm still holding onto my affection for Elijah and Frodo, but oh damn, you're all making it hard! ;) I think Elijah did a great job. Sam... I think I need to make a Sam avatar! :grin

Give the books a try! Yeah, there's a lot in there, but I found that knowing where the story was going helped a lot. I got so frustrated the first time because it was sloooooooooow. Plus, all that Sam and Frodo love is too darn sweet! I still don't know how to read it without a romantic subtext. I don't think Tolkien meant it that way, but I can't imagine what other way to view them. And I don't wanna! :p

Well, Tolkien was one of those Catholic Medievalist-types, wherein the difference between "Love, Sacred and Profane" is not always so clear. So if you're not entirely right, Cicca, you're not entirely wrong either. :hmm

Ick to those Catholic abuses!

But if Mister Frodo and his gardener snuggle up under one blanket, who's to say what's up?

Uhhh... I mean, who's to say... Um... heehee

Sooooo, did anyone catch Sean Astin on Ellen this morning? A whole half hour. :heart He's awfully cute. It's so great that he and his wife have been together for 11 years. And please let that Oscar buzz turn into gold!

MTV clip

Postby Jennpurr » Tue Jan 20, 2004 2:49 pm

Hey kittens,

Hopefully one of you will know about this and can help me out. Does anyone know where I can DL the short spoof that MTV did for Lord of the Rings? All I can remember is that, Sarah Michelle Gellar was in it. I believe it was from 2001 or 2002. I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

Hello Jennpurr!

I don't know about downloading, but if you have the "Extended Edition" of "Fellowship" on DVD, this hilarious parody with SMG and Jack Black is an "Easter Egg" on one of the DVDs.

It is screamingly funny, and worth investing in the DVDs just to get it:) !

Google is't helping me either. Although I found a link for GG. Lord of the Cock Rings! Yep. Jack Black is one classy guy!

If all fails, find someone who has the extended dvd.

I've finally seen this film. My opinion: WOW!!!

As interesting as the Sam/Frodo subtext was, the Merry/Pippin subtext seemed to be even more prevelant in this film.

However, I hope that this film finally gets the recognition it deserves and a Best Picture and Best Director Oscar (although I think to pick one film out of the three is wrong, I think it should be a special award for all three films as they are really one big film).

Sidenote: Isn't it a crime that Andy Serkis is not being recognised in the acting stakes for his role of Gollum? It is an incredible performance and one which I think Andy deserves full recognition for. What do you all think?

If it were up to me, the choice for Best Supporting Actor Oscar would be between Andy Serkis for Gollum and Ellen DeGeneres for Dory:) .

When I saw it in the theater, the audience was kind of vocal. And they cheered when he was dispatched, twice. Anyway, I found myself feeling like the minority. I missed gollum, I kept thinking, toss FRODO into the fire instead!! sigh

Ok, just the thought that someone would want to toss Sam in after the ring, well oh man, I need therapy! Sam... :love

I agree that Andy Serkis deserves huge recognition for the part. He did an amazing job. The animators did as well.

I'm still holding to hope for a Sean Astin nomination.

It got four awards, best original score, best original song, best director and the big one, best picture :clap

Looking very good for the Oscars ;)

Yes! I was so excited for them. I'm still wondering where their heads were for not nominating any of the actors, but hey!

I also just clued in last night that Into The West could get nominated for an Oscar. And they perform the songs at the Oscars. Meaning Annie Lennox could be there! :luv

I was really enjoying actually seeing Fran Walsh last night. FUN! Their kids really look like her. Wow.

Ooh, I forgot to add my evil mind's thought during the Golden Globes. All that nice Return of the King stuff and there's Stuart Townsend sitting there. I wonder if any of them spoke? Hmmmmmmmm. I'll just assume that he was happy for Charlize!

They just announced the Oscar nominees and neither Andy Serkis nor Sean Astin received nominations:cry

Oh well, I guess we'll have to be content with the nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, etc. etc. etc etc.:clap

I lost that when A Beautiful Mind won. Ugh! Not a great movie at all.

Oh! And when they gave Gwyneth Paltrow the best actress Oscar over Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth. :spin

And yet I watch!

If I wanted to know who won what Oscar, I'd read it in next day's newspaper rather than waste three or more hours watching a bunch of self-congratulatory claptrap on TV. It's just easier for me that way.

And even though I haven't seen either movie, I too believe Cate Blanchett should've won instead of Gywneth Paltrow on the basic principle that in the few movies I've seen Blanchett in I consider her the better actress and just plain prettier:p . In fact, I found Pushing Tin an overall weak movie simply because its entire premise is based on John Cusack cheating on Cate:stink . Never mind that the other woman is Angelina Jolie, but how am I supposed to buy into that?

At least Cate was pretty to look at, just as she was in LoTR as elf lady Galadriel despite not having as much to do overall.

I know I mentioned this before and I'm hoping one of you can help me.

The clip that they were advertising for Lord of the Rings Tuesday, the one where that guy was running around impersonating Gollum... does anyone know where I might be able to DL that?

I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

Which clip do you mean? Some anonymous guy pretending to be Gollum or Andy Serkis in the "gimp-suit"?

If it's Andy Serkis then you could try lordoftherings.net

Otherwise.... I have no clue!

Sorry, Cicca. I should have been more clear. It wasn't Andy Serkis, it was just some guy running around impersonating him. The clip was shown in the theater.

Hopefully I can find this somewhere.

Thanks,

DGA coronates Peter Jackson

Postby sam7777 » Sun Feb 08, 2004 7:18 pm

DGA coronates Peter Jackson for 'Return of the King'
Quote:
By Gregg Kilday

Peter Jackson won the top honors for outstanding directorial achievement in feature film for New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" at the 56th annual Directors Guild of America Awards held Saturday night at the Century Plaza Hotel.

Jackson, who also received nominations for each of the first two installments of his epic trilogy based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, took home his first DGA award for the trilogy's grand finale. He prevailed over a competitive field of nominees that included Sofia Coppola for "Lost in Translation," Clint Eastwood for "Mystic River," Gary Ross for "Seabiscuit" and Peter Weir for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."

In accepting the award, Jackson said, "I am so proud to accept this for making a film that, thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien's book, promotes the values of courage, of friendship and faith."

The DGA award makes Jackson the front-runner in the current Oscar race -- where he is nominated as best director and "King" is up for eleven awards -- since only six times since 1949 has the winner of the DGA award not gone on to win the best directing Oscar. Jackson also recently picked up a Golden Globe as best director.
I hope he gets the Oscar too.
