Hemiola, I mentioned it after i saw it and you are right its a movie everyone should see...Its unbelievable to me that although i had heard of homosexuals being interred in concentration camps during Hitlers reign, i had no idea of the extent of the hate and mistreatment..It opened my eyes, thats for sure..

I was deeply touched by the lesbians story in the documentary..How the woman she met at that one club, helped her get out of germany..The one in the film didnt even know the other that well, they met in passing, but she saved her life..Its a pretty amazing testament to the fact that we come into each others lives for a reason..

I just went onto Amazon to see how much Show me Love was there, and at the bottom of the page, there were a few links that caught my eye:

the Lesbian Film Festival part has a good list of movies, some of which have been mentioned here, some of which haven't been.

But the Joss one is the one that really caught my eye. It lists all the movies in which a Lesbian dies, goes crazy, etc. etc. It's meant as a snarky satire, good list of creepy movies though.

Here is an interesting article about M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs."

www.suntimes.com/output/p...ndy02.html

Shyamalan talks about an alternate ending he planned.

"Originally, I wanted the movie to end with Mel Gibson's character finding his faith and then pulling up to a horrible car accident where a teenage girl is dying. He gives her last rites and whispers, 'Don't be afraid because you're not alone.' It was a great ending with real power, but I worried that some would think I was pandering to our basic emotions. And the last thing I thought a lady who works 14 hours a day needed to see on a Saturday night was a teen dying on a street."

Lost and Delirious

Postby Cipher » Fri Sep 06, 2002 3:36 pm

I just noticed last night that Lost and Delirious is now showing on premium cable. It was on HBO2 last night (which I noticed in time to tape but haven't yet watched it), and it will be showing again on HBO2 Sunday night / Monday morning at 1:45 am (Pacific time, but check your listings for other timezones). I don't know if it'll be showing on plain HBO any time soon (or at all) for folks that don't get HBO2.

Last time I checked the video store they finally had it listed in their computer on DVD (which had been available from the Lion's Gate web site since last December). I can't remember if they had a projected date for VHS or no info. The web site still only lists the DVD, no VHS.

Blue Crush

Postby ruby » Sat Sep 07, 2002 8:31 am

Bringing down the high-culture mood of the thread...

Last night my friend Laurie and I went to see "Blue Crush" and it was awesome. It's a surfing movie about three girls in Hawaii and their dream to become pros. The screenplay is laughable, the music is puerile, and I DON'T CARE. Watching girls surf for two hours is a beautiful thing. If you are looking for a fun, fluffy eye candy movie, this is it.

Plus, it ends with the girls self-sufficient and together as a chosen family, not with the tacked-on love interest sweeping one of them away, so it's not completely insulting to your intelligence.

We stayed until the end of the credits, as all the 14 year-olds milled out of the theater, and then looked around at all the other 30-ish lesbians in the audience, whereupon we all burst out laughing.

I think I might go see it again just to watch Michelle Rodriguez's arms ripple as she drives a Jet-Ski through 15-foot swells.

Now back to your regularly-scheduled enriching entertainment.

Hey, did anybody catch the Gay Weddings series on Bravo this week? I only saw the Tuesday night episodes, but I really, really enjoyed them. Gay guys arguing over flower arrangements, gay girls tearing up over love letters, wedding cake and cold feet drama. Fun was had by... well, me. Heh.

Parts of it were kind of sickeningly sweet, but hey, I love that shit. Hee.

I'm also wondering if and when Bravo will be rerunning this so that I can catch the rest. Anybody know?

Well, I've finally gotten to see Lost and Delirious. I can appreciate the movie (and a nice performance by Misha Barton as the couple's new boarding-school roommate), but it is a sad movie and tells a tragic story which is not everyone's cup of tea. It's an example of how homophobia in a family and society can disrupt a happy love even without realizing it exists (but it's mostly about the girls themselves and the choices they make). I think the movie can make you think about things (how would you treat people, what would you do to reclaim a lost love, etc), so it can be worth seeing despite the tragedy. Reactions will vary, so as they say: Kitten discression is advised. There's happier stuff in the beginning, so you could stop watching when they "break up" and avoid the pain of the rest of it.

Blue Crush has amazing surfing visuals, including a lot of underwater shots (like slow-motion shots of the waves rolling overhead) which I found quite cool. The movie is mostly about the surfing and particularly one girl's preparation for an annual surfing competition and the everyday challenges (including the "tacked-on" love story) she faces trying to take care of a younger sister on her own (with two friends that also live with them) while pursuing surfing--there are a lot of parallels with Buffy/Dawn actually--and trying to return to competition surfing after a near-fatal surfing accident a few years back (and the psychological obstacles that gives her). The story's not super deep, but also not shallow, and it's a fairly nice ride without being light and fake. And that makes it fairly easy to let the story flow and really appreciate the visuals from the girls to the surf.

Just thought you'd like to know the movie that launched a thousand groans is coming out in a special 10th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition.. yes, that's right.. now you'll be able to watch "Claire of the Moon" with 92 minutes of DVD extras.. and if you think i'm kidding..

www.wolfevideo.com/az_ind...wolfeid=20

Shouldn't there be laws against this kind of thing?

But onto more serious movie recommendations... I had a particularly bad week and decided to have a feel good movie-athon...in French. So, if you are feeling a little blah and like to read subtitles, might I suggest the following titles...

Red (1994): Part of the Three Colors trilogy and directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski is a hard film to explain, but at its heart it is about getting a second chance at life and love.

Happenstance (2001): One of my favorite undiscovered gems... this film explores the Butterfly theory (you know, that the flutter of a butterfly's wings can cause a Hurricane in another part of the world) and how it leads two people meant to be together to each other.

Amelie (2001): Well, this pretty much the film good movie of this century... if this film doesn't make you smile, then you might want to check your pulse.. you could be dead..

After watching these films... all was once again right with the world.. :)

It's really very rare that movies you *want* to have dvd extras, do. The only movie I think that I love that comes with decent dvd bonuses is 'Hedwig'. Velvet Goldmine and 'A Life Less Ordinary', two of my Ewan Mcgregor-a-liscious faves, come with maybe their theatrical trailer.

Anyway, my favorite lesbian film *ever* is 'All Over Me' which is what finally made me realize I liked girls. I knew it and was in denial for a year or two, then I caught a glimpse of Leisha Hailey (k.d.lang's girlfriend? ex? I don't know anymore) and found myself relating to the characters of Ellen and Claude way too much and it was over, I totally knew. An amazing film for baby dykes and, well, anyone else really. Shot in New York , full of a cast of mostly unknown actors, dealing with both gay girls and boys (but mostly girls, yay!), really great chick punk soundtrack. Just a beautiful, beautiful film about unreturned love. *sigh*

Yes, All Over Me has a great soundtrack, and I liked that movie too.

But, I want to recommend a movie that I've seen about a million times and that is A League of Their Own. I absolutly love this movie. It stars Geena Davis and Lori Petty with Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna. It's perfect for anyone who loves sports, or for anyone who wants to see a movie with a ton of women in it. For those who haven't seen it, it's about two sisters who join the all womens pro baseball league to play while all the men are out fighting in WW2. It's a fun movie, and it's historical (and hysterical, in some parts), I guess I just love it because it was a huge part of my life, back when I was sporty.

And if that doesn't sell you, there's talk of Madonna's bosoms. ;)

Ohh, glad someone mentioned "All Over Me". Alison Folland - one of the most underrated actresses I've ever seen. She pulled off that gawkish teenager thing brilliantly. And while Nicole Kidman was being praised for "To Die For" I was crying foul that Alison was overlooked.

Yeah, Alison Folland is great, I mean the effort she put into her performance in Finding Forrester was outstanding. You could really feel what she was going through as she answered the question on Jeopardy (or is that questioned the answer?). Okay, I'm just kidding...but I do like her as an actress, she doesn't get many big parts though.

Actually, the movie that I recently saw and liked was My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding.

I normally don't laugh really loudly at movies, just a chuckle here and there. I died laughing during this movie. It was really well done and I have been enjoying the fact that it has been inching it's way up the movie rankings.

Definately recommend it. :)

All Over Me

Postby ruby » Mon Sep 09, 2002 10:14 am

When I was teaching at Hunter College last year I saw Allison Folland all the time in the halls and it would be a little wiggy because she's done such astounding film work and she's, you know...a regular person. And a college student. Brendan Sexton was there, too, and he was so incredible in Welcome to the Dollhouse and Boys Don't Cry. I really admire actors who can make such good choices in projects when they're young, and get an education too.

Amber Benson

Postby themagicpixie » Mon Sep 09, 2002 10:34 am

Did any UK Kitties catch her whole five minutes of screen time in the Jack Reed film on BBC-1 on Friday night?!

To be fair she had more to do than in a couple of other ones I've seen. In this one, a family friend moves in with the Reed family after someone tries to kill her. Amber's character, Nicole Reed, is looking forward to her high-school prom, but trying to lose a bit of weight so she can look good in her dress (I have to say I thought she looked pretty damn fine as she was!).

At one point, the family are having dinner when bullets shatter their patio window - no-one is hurt, but everyone is pretty shaken up. Amber/Nicole is safely on the floor out of any bullet trajectory. It was good to see.

Nicole eventually ends up going to the prom with her date - and a bodyguard.

Edited to add: This film is called: Jack Reed - One of Our Own. IMDB link:

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl

Postby Hyo Shin » Mon Sep 09, 2002 11:03 am

I saw a press preview of a Korean SF movie called "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl." No, I'm not a journalist. My gf is.

The movie was boring. But I like the basic concept of the movie. It's about a VR game called "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl." The game's goal is rather ridiculous. You have to save the Little Match Girl from danger and 'lead her to a peaceful death!'

The story is tedious and confusing. But it has a happy ending. Our Chinese restaurant delivery boy hero changes her destiny.

I want my own "Resurrection of Tara" game.

It took ages to get a copy of it but the film is really great, although some of the acting is really *really* questionable. No, *really*.
