aw, kittens, thanks for the reassurances. I loved Flo in the book and i'm sure i'll love the take of it in the series. i noticed the change was the location of the ending, not the perosn chosen. i like the double meaning of the rose being thrown to Flo and not kitty. now i only wish i'd get the tapes soon and that they work. lol.

i'm glad the love did transfer on screen because a lot of what nan feels towards flo is narrated, not dialogue. they dont even say i love you (and a form of it too) until the end but you can read about nan's crush and nan's flirting and nan's readyness to pop and just take flo. i liked her jealousy of lilian and i liked how she compared her crush on flo like she was 18 all over again (that is trully how you know she's starting all over again with flo). and durning their first kiss when she's shaking... that was sooooooo swoon worthy....

i want more part three photos! hehe!

I loved Part 3, it was definitely my favourite part. Like other Kittens, I was on the edge of my seat at the end, hoping that Nan would throw the rose to Flo. And I didn't even mind the cheesy heart-shaped fade-out "roadrunner" thingy at the final scene. It was all good. :)

I loved Kitty in Part 1, but by Part 3 I knew who Nan belonged with. :heart I did feel sorry for Kitty, though, but ultimately she made her choice. I was only left hoping that she would find someone she could truly be happy with too.

I'm nearly finished reading the book (about halfway through part 3). I'm noticing quite a few differences between the TV and book versions, but the main story remains the same. I find the book is better in that it's filling in a lot of blanks for me about Nan's motivations in the TV version. Particularly why she took up with Diana, and her whole state of mind from the time she left Kitty to the time she arrived on Florence's doorstep.

I think I also like the book Flo more that the TV Flo (nothing against Jodhi May, who is gorgeous, of course), she just seems a more well-rounded character in the book. :shy

For those overseas folks looking to buy the DVD you could try BlackStar. I'm pretty sure they ship internationally. The direct link is here. You must be able to play Region 2 DVDs on your player as the DVD has only been given a R2 release so far. They've also got the video too, here (PAL only, of course). Hope that helps.

OK Thanks for the link..Just a quick question before I order though..I looked on my DVD player and it said NTSC and PAL compatible..Does this mean that it will play Region 2 DVD's? Excuse my ignorance..I just want to be sure before I order it..

Postby Rane018 » Sun Nov 03, 2002 11:06 pm

well, mine says compatible with NTSC (which is U.S. anyhow) and PAL (european) TV sets. so i'm not sure whether it'll play the dvd either. lol...

Re: Tipping the Velvet Thread

Postby the kat whisperer » Sun Nov 03, 2002 11:24 pm

I'm almost positive the NTSC/PAL thing has nothing to do with the Region code side of things. As far as I know (and I'm hoping a better informed Kitten can correct me on this if I'm wrong), if it doesn't say somewhere that your DVD player is multi-region, it probably won't be able to play other regions other than your own.

I think I may have confused myself there. :confused

Anyhoo, you can "chip" your DVD player or hack the code, so that it can play multiple regions, but I'm not sure how reliable those methods are.

You can get hack codes on the net, although they don't accept responsibility for any problems caused by that hacking. However, I do know a few people who have hacked their dvd players and they seem to work just fine.

As for ordering the dvd, you can get it cheapest from play.com, I think. They're pretty reliable too. Hope that helps. :)

I watched Our Mutual Friend the other night. It had Keeley Hawes in it and she's so lovely. Suprise!!

It's really good, don't know if anyone else has seen it. Millions of characters.

Heavenly would have to be how I'd describe Keeley, and of course an excellent actress.

I love "Our Mutual Friend"! It's the only Dickens book I actually managed to finish. The BBC can definately do costume dramas superbly, & Keeley Hawes does look lovely all the way through - all 6 hours of it!!!

Rane018 you must see part one!! Keeley Hawes as Kitty is wonderful and incredibly sexy. Plus the final episode won't have the same impact if you haven't seen the first episode.

p.s. Just wanted to say I'm reading Camp Flutie at the moment and absolutely loving it!!!

Sarah Waters and Andrew Davies Interview

Postby tommo » Wed Nov 06, 2002 12:38 pm

This is transcribed from the DVD, so apologies to those who have it and spot mistakes. :)

SW = Sarah Waters

AD = Andrew Davies

SW: I never imagined that the book would take on this sort of extra life now. I wrote it…really I wrote it for myself, you know, it was a book that I wanted to read um…a lesbian novel with a clear sort of lesbian agenda but that was lots of fun too and was telling a fairly classic sort of rags to riches story in a way. For me, it’s a very lesbian book and it deals very frankly and with relish really, with the whole issue of lesbian sex and I thought I just can’t imagine the BBC doing this, you know, sort of dildos and all. But um, they have and I’m delighted. A big source of inspiration for me was images from the music hall of male impersonation, I mean, you can still get these fantastically glamorous images of people like Vesta Tilly and Hettie King looking very dapper in their sort of gentlemen’s suits. To us, they look like very queer images and we’re beginning to get more used to drag kings and things like that. And I just began to think what did these things mean for a contemporary audience. This was part of mainstream music hall culture but did it carry any sort of queer or erotic charge for anyone in the audience.

AD: I’ve been a fan of classic 19th Century fiction and I particularly liked the form of story like the development of a girl from girlhood to womanhood. I don’t know what that says about me but it’s one of my favourite stories. Um…another thing that I’m really keen on, I’m not ashamed to admit, is Victorian erotic memoirs and Victorian pornography. And it seemed to me that this book contained delightful elements of Victorian classic fiction and also the kind of underworld of fiction and memoirs. Writing of the period and ah…I just thought this is great, you know? Sort of like Pride and Prejudice with dirty bits. When I first read the book and came to the bit with the dildo, I thought, will the BBC let us do it but I’d be dreadfully disappointed if we have to cut it, in fact I don’t want to do it and um…and in fact everybody’s been very sporting about it. Um…I wouldn’t have minded if some of the love scenes had gone on a little longer (SW laughs). I guess Sarah and I have talked together about this (she nods) but, you know, I like the romantic nature of it. I am a bit of a softie.

SW: The biggest change for me I think was the pacing of it. I mean, drama is…TV is much faster. In a novel, especially a novel like this which is sort of a 19th Century tradition, you sort of linger over things, you have these long, lingering descriptions and um…the drama, the TV you know, adaptation is more sort of bam bam bam bam and that was sort of quite a shock in a way for me, not to be able…I wanted to hang on, you know, to a lot of particular moments and draw them out a bit. (To AD) But I think what you gain is a sharpening up of it and what you brought out is…you’ve put in some lines that…every time I see them, whenever Kitty says “I hate the way you make me feel.”, I always…whenever I see that I always think ‘oh god I wish I’d thought of that’. It’s such a great line you know…

AD: Is it not in the book?

SW: No it’s not. It’s your line.

AD: Oh, I didn’t realize that.

SW: And it’s just – you’ve just put in moments like that that really crystallize relationships.

AD: You have great scenes in it; you have great dialogue, I didn’t have to do much work! You know, because the dialogue was all there. I just sort of had to select it and cut it. The hardest work I had to do actually was to write all these songs. I thought that Sarah would know all the songs that the girls sing and I’d sort of hoped that these songs would also be apposite to their situation. And then I found out that you didn’t really have very specific suggestions…

SW: No…I think I made some up, the songs that the novel refers to are real and some aren’t.

AD: And then she’d only made up the titles, you hadn’t…

SW: (laughs) Yes, there was no song!

AD: …made up the words, so I found myself…I wrote about six songs you know, verses and choruses. That was the hardest work I had to do.

SW: And that’s some of the stuff that I like best about the drama, because of course it’s stuff that I didn’t do, that’s there in the fabric of the text, just beyond it, you know? That’s what you can’t get in a novel, you know, you can’t have singing and dancing…you can describe it but what you can get is them on stage you know, with this fantastic chemistry between them and this performance. Nancy and Kitty, I mean. And the final song too, I mean, that’s all your work and that’s just this lovely sort of recap of the whole series, so those are the bits actually that I cherish.

AD: Maybe the one I’m proudest of is the song about Bill and his shy brother Bob in which you’ve got this very complicated thing of two girls who are dressed up as boys, ordinary cockney boys, and ah…Bill is trying to get his shy brother Bob to get in with the girls and so on, and Bob says he doesn’t know how to do it. So Bill tells him. And they finish up with um…with Bill showing Bob how to kiss and Bob turns out to be unexpectedly good at it. But then you realize that these are actually two real girls who are really in love with each other and the song enables them to kiss each other in full view of the audience, who aren’t really in on the story.

SW: One of my favourite parts of the book is the moment early on in the music hall when Nancy is falling in love with Kitty and Kitty throws the rose and I was really pleased to find that the drama makes a big deal out of that. And it does capture the romance of that. They invited me to go down and watch the filming and also dress me up as an extra which I have to say was a brilliant experience. I adored it, mainly because we were doing a music hall bit and I mean, it’s not as you see it onscreen, Keeley wasn’t really there but she was there for part of it and I was in the audience, you know, dressed in a sort of bonnet and a wig and gloves, looking at this moment, which had actually been sort of a seminal moment for me in forming the book, you know? This gorgeous male impersonator on stage and Keeley really is jaw droppingly gorgeous in her boy’s suit. And there was I, wanting her to throw her rose to me! It was really quite emotional.

does anybody know how restrictive the BBC is as far as publishing their images on a website is? I have no problem with asking for permission, as they ask in their terms on their website, I'd just like to know if there is any chance to get it.
