Various Issues Holding Up New Seasons of FOX's 'Tru Calling,' USA's 'The 4,400'
Quote:
Meanwhile as for "Tru Calling," the decision by FOX yesterday to postpone the show's second season launch on November 4 has exposed some serious issues about the series' future. Originally given a 13-episode order for its second season, industry insiders say the network may halt production once work completes on its sixth episode. The reason however isn't a creative one (FOX reportedly likes the direction the show is taking for its new season), but rather like most TV-related decisions, an economic one.

With a hefty midseason roster that includes over a dozen series .... the network is undoubtedly looking to cut back on some of its commitments. And with "Tru" being at best a modest success for FOX, the odds are much higher for one of its new dramatic entries to succeed than to go to bat again with the middling "Tru."

No formal decision has been made about rolling back the show's 13-episode order nor has producer 20th Century Fox Television or Original Television commented on the possibility.

@#$%^& Fox!!!!!!

This continues their pattern of refusing to give a show a proper chance:rage . It happened with "Wonderfalls" (I know a lot of Kittens didn't like it, but I for one would have liked to have seen more of it) and yes, even "Firefly" (which they refused to show in its proper order).

Even when they have a fabulous talent at their disposal such as ED, it seems that they won't take advantage of it:( .

Makes me think that if they are wise, AH, AB, MT, CC, and SMG ought to stay as far away from them as possible....

Buffy and any other ME show (like the one that starts with the letter F) is off topic on the Kitten board forums (see the FAQ).

Hemiola: Fox is certainly a lousy network. For picking bad shows to air as much as not giving shows a chance IMHO. Just seeing the last two awful seasons of X-files was enought to mostly put me off the network (except for Tru and John Doe). I think Fox's decision to air the two shows you mention is more of an indication of their lack of quality control than cancellation of same but this thread is about Tru Calling. I would be sorry to see Tru go (though not surprised) as I was sorry to see "Brimstone", "John Doe" and "Dark Angel" cancelled for the crap that came after. I've said it before but it bears repeating that I wouldn't want any show that I cared about on Fox.

ETA: More news on Tru:

'Tru' Doomed?
Quote:
Uh oh. After publicly patting itself on the back for picking up the struggling Tru Calling for a second season, FOX has now reduced its initial order from 13 shows to 6. As if that weren't evil omen enough, the net has also announced that the show will not debut on November 4, as planned.

That combination of factors usually only means one thing: cancellation.

Tru Calling has fallen victim in part to the strength of FOX's current reality schedule, as well as its move away from scifi/fantasy shows on the scripted side and towards soaps like the Hawaii-set North Shore, which will be taking Tru's November 4 slot.

Although Tru opened strong last year, it failed to attract a wider non-scifi audience. Hopes were high for this year after FOX's decision to re-up and allow the show to find its audience, but the powers that be appear to have decided that Tru's set-up may be inherently limiting.
I don't know if the episode cut is true but if so, Tru will prolly not air until summer when the episodes are burned off. You have to wonder why they bothered to renew it.

GG Has anyone heard anything from ED? Though I suppose she would probably try to put the best spin on it :paranoid Out

My opinion, and just my opinion: it's not nice to cheer the cancellation of a (non-ME) show that another Kitten has said that they like. We all have different tastes: there's lots of cr*p shows that other Kittens are/were devoted to, but I won't name them and say "Cancel 'em, please!" (or say that their cancellation was a good thing). I just won't watch 'em. :peace

Re: More on Tru

Postby sam7777 » Wed Sep 15, 2004 10:59 pm

GG: I certainly wasn't cheering just saying I didn't like the shows. I came, saw, didn't like it and not sorry it's gone but certainly not cheering (well maybe a bit of cheering for the "F" one cuz I'm a bitter "Dark Angel" fan). Folks are free to state their opinions on any shows I like or dislike and I hope they do so because it's great to discuss stuff and have different points of view. I'm certainly not the ultimate arbiter of taste. It's certainly no reflection on anything but a difference in taste and opinion which is what Genuine Molded Plastic is about posting opinions on shows whether positive or negative. I certainly hope no one likes everything I like cuz that would be scary. For one, I liked "Brimstone" but it was certainly as big a failure as shows I didn't like and as such if someone says it's dreck and should have been cancelled, I can certainly see their point. I don't take it personally because the show is not me.

In any case, we can all agree that Fox sucks as a network even if we can't agree on all the decisions that they made wrong. I am particularily sorry to see good shows like "Tru Calling" cancelled to make way for more reality shows and soaps like "North Shore" which are not genres I favor. I haven't found anything from Eliza yet. And while the news looks bad, the show is not cancelled and could still be a mid-season replacement. I know that I will be hoping though not cheering for "North Shore" to fail so we can get Tru back (sorry in advance to North Shore fans).

Now this is a shame if it's true. Tru Calling started slowly but by the end it had built up a very good premise and I was looking forward to it's second season with real relish.

I, as someone from Britain, am getting pretty sick and tired of drama (especially quality cult drama like Tru) getting sidelined for reality TV and soaps.

If this is the death knell, then I hope that Eliza gets something soon. Hopefully it won't have ME's name attached to it.

This is very depressing.

I never watched the final episodes. Jason Priestley and his character just bugged me way too much. I was planning on tuning back in once he had departed. Maybe Tru Calling isn´t the greatest show out there, but it certainly is lightyears above and beyond this new show "Medical Investigators" (I think NBC airs it). If a show that bad, cliched and ridiculously stupid can make it on the air then a show like Tru Calling certainly deserves a second round.

If you didn't see the season finale, G, you missed an outstanding episode. The annoying thing, to me, about the JP character was the fact that he definitely seemed to be evil, but we couldn't tell exactly what-for, or why . . . and *we* were told more than Tru was, which made it doubly frustrating.

In the finale, all that came out in the open . . . yet, there's still more intriguing (rather than merely annoying) mystery, what w/ the connection of "Jack" (JP) and Tru's (similarly empowered) father. It's gonna be an all out throwdown between Tru and Jack (w/ Tru's dad having an ambivalent influence: aiding Jack, yet respecting---protecting?---Tru)!*

GG Or it was, anyway. :( Out

*Plus, I for one was glad to bid adieu to Boring Luc. :yawn

The only way I could stand watching one more episode with JP doing that eyebrow thing he does, is if I´d know for sure that the sanctimonious holier than thou look on his face will be wiped off permanently. I hope that will happen, I´d start watching again and I´ll watch the final episodes of the first season as well then, but I certainly won´t if things end here.

The history of FOX and SciFi/Fantasy is a long and bizarre one. They seem to have tried more SF/F shows than any other network, and yet they never seem to know what to do with them.

The X-Files was their lone success - which yes they kept on the air too long, but that's something every network does.

If I'm remembering correctly, the only other FOX SF/F shows that survived longer than one season were Millennium, which they retooled twice, Sliders, which they ran out of order in its first season and butchered in its third, and Dark Angel, which was doing okay before they cancelled it to make room for the F show.

So really, Tru Calling is already one of the more successful SF/F shows, relatively speaking, in FOX's history. And how pathetic is that...

"The stories we tell - that's us explaining how we think the world works. Once we speak it, once we say it aloud, that makes it real for us - and real for everyone else who hears it too. When we tell a story, we invite people to visit our reality. We invite them to move in. Our stories are the reality we live in." - David Gerrold, The Martian Child

Tru Calling on French cable

Postby BFR from Paris » Thu Oct 21, 2004 4:42 pm

Tru Calling season 1 has started airing on French cable (Téva) every Friday night (I think)

Too bad it's up against the 3rd season of "Alias" (which has not yet aired on national television) :p

I watched the pilot (of Tru Calling) and was not that enthused... but hey, it's nice that Eliza has her own TV show :)

btw, in French, "trou" (which is how we pronounce "Tru") means "hole", they really should have chosen a different name for her! :lol

Re: Tru Calling on French cable

Salut BFR:bigwave

Really? They pronounce it "trou"? That's hilarious:lmao . I would have thought that they would pronounce it to rhyme with "cru":rofl

The name is unusual in English, and is short for "Trudy". They chose it to create a "jeu de mots" with the word "true"(="vrai"; calling="vocation"). At least, I always assumed that this was the producers' intention;) .

I always got a kick out of the fact that they pronounced "Buffy" as "boeuf-y"--perhaps because she was "forte comme un boeuf"? I would have thought it might be something like "bouffie":lol .

Hemiola

Re: Tru Calling on French cable

Postby BFR from Paris » Fri Oct 22, 2004 10:07 am

Salut Hemiola!

Actually, you got me there :hmm LOL

It's true that we would pronounce "tru" like "cru" (which doesn't mean anything but is not pretty for a first name - and it could be misheard as "truie", which means "sow" and is commonly used as an insult :lol )

But in the French dubbed version, they use the English pronounciation, therefore it sounds like "trou", and that's what I meant :blush

And LOL @ "boeuf-y", I never thought of that actually :p

Btw, "bouffie" means "bloated", so that would not be so good either ;)

But see, in general we try to pronounce names as they are pronounced in the original language ;)

Although we say "Ta-ra" (like Giles) and not "Tay-ra" (like the non-English characters), and "Xander" is called "Alex" in the French version of Btvs...

Another funny example is the character Arthur Martin from "Six Feet Under", because in France, "Arthur Martin" is a brand of dishwashers and other domestic appliances... I haven't seen the French version, but I hope they pronounce his name à l'américaine to sound more like "Martine"

Anyway, language is fascinating :lol

Last weekend, Eliza Dushku and Shawn Reaves appeared at the London Movie, Comic and Media Expo in the UK where they signed autographs for hundreds of fans, and confirmed the disappointing news that their show "Tru Calling" has been cancelled according to Support TC.

The original report of the cancelling appeared on MiraclesHQ and revealed FOX cut the order of episodes for the second season from 13 to six and then just as shooting for the sixth episode was wrapping up, the cancellation came out.

There are no immediate plans to air the final six episodes and Reaves said that fans need to fight to see the six episodes that were filmed for Season 2. A DVD of the first season is set to come out in December, and if it sells well, they might release the final six episodes on DVD at a later date.

Whoa... hang on a minute. Don't go getting all conspiracy-theory paranoid about this. There's a very simple reason why all these shows have been cancelled - it's because almost every TV show that has ever been made or ever will be made gets cancelled. It's extremely rare for a TV show to be so successful that they can call it quits on their own terms.

In the case of Tru Calling - and Wonderfalls, for that matter, and also Dark Angel, which had a lesbian character as well - I don't think the lesbian characters had nearly as much to do with their cancellation as did the fact that FOX has a terrible track record with SF/Fantasy shows. They also cancelled Strange World, Harsh Realm, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., and of course Firefly, among others. At this point, I don't know why they keep buying these shows, since they obviously don't know what to do with them.

"The stories we tell - that's us explaining how we think the world works. Once we speak it, once we say it aloud, that makes it real for us - and real for everyone else who hears it too. Well, Bob, when I said

Quote:
"Let's make GG's life sh*ttier than it already is" conspiracy going on here?

I was clearly speaking rhetorically (or do you know something I don't know? :paranoid )

I think that Fox keeps thinking, re sci fi/genre shows, "Maybe this will be the next X-Files! (then we can run it into the ground, and keep it on the air till it reeks!)."

Thing is, how long did The X-Files take to become The X-Files (in its prime)? (OK: by the amount of time Tru had---but not in the amount some of their other cancelled sci fi shows got) However, I don't think that Tru got the kind of promotion that X- did (did anyone ever see a commercial for Tru, after the series began? Barely.)

Feh: I thought the show was just hitting its stride at the end (and I'm just damn pissed that we were taunted w/ a S2 pick-up in May. I had a whole summer to look forward to Yummy Eliza-ness continuing, only to have the rug pulled out from under, when NOT expected :mad )

GG Can we now make this the "When will see Yummy Eliza next?" thread? :pray Out
