Hey Semirasis,

I wasn't referring to the actual presence of gay characters on the show. I agree, we have quite a few gay characters generally on television, and on shows like 'Queer as folk' we see much more than 'displays of affection.' I was just surprised to see, on channel ten particularly, rather than the SBS, the amount of kissing that was shown. When there was an affair with a guy at the gym, the footage that was shown of them having sex was far from insinuation, it was right there in your face.

*shrugs* I don't know, I guess I see Aussie television differently to you, and I was just pleasantly surprised with the leniancy of the censors. :p

Charmed

Postby Italiangirl » Mon Sep 23, 2002 11:35 pm

Hey Bob...

I used to really love Charmed, until Prue got the axe. Or, errrm, whatever it was she got, since the writers blatantly OMITTED the whole death part. Anyway, I had issues with the "long lost sister" plot, even though I really love Rose McGowan. I watched for a few eps but couldn't get past the whole situation and stopped.

I confess to watching the two hour season premiere last night...I think I was drawn in by all those tantalizing promos of Phoebe in mermaid gear. [I know, I know, sometimes I think I'm the lesbian version of a dirty old man...lol]

Anyway, the chemistry is better between all interested parties, but my god, will somebody puh-lease get rid of Cole Turner. That storyline burned out ages ago. Anyway, back to you, Bob, I'm getting to my point, really. What I want to know is What the Hell Happened? Does Piper still own P3? How did Phoebe get famous? I thought Cole died? Who with the what huh?

I know I could go on a big net hunt and get the lowdown, but I was hoping someone here (BOB) could give me the Halliwell cliffnotes. I think I might start watching again.

* takes deep breath *

Okay...

Yes, Piper still owns P3. She's pregnant now, as you saw last night. Phoebe took a job as an advice columnist sometime toward the end of last season.

And Cole? Well, he got trapped into becoming the reincarnation of "The Source of All Evil," and Phoebe married him anyway, thinking she could play both sides of the good/bad struggle. I actually thought the show handled the whole "temptations of dark magic" issue a lot better than another show I could mention. :rolleyes Anyway, when Cole was vanquished, his human side managed to hang on in the hell-dimension where vanquished demons go. He then managed to pick up the powers of some vanquished demons, which is how he got out.

I was actually intrigued by the route they took with Cole and Phoebe, where Phoebe loves him but doesn't want to see him any more. Chances are that won't last, though. :

I'm a little late since this has veered elsewhere but I must chime in with the Gilmore Girls love. I've been watching since ep one and it has never failed to be fantastic. I'm all invested in the charactors I love booing Dean (complete with popcorn, or possibly dog toy throwing ) and cheering on Jess (go Jess go).

Love Rory and Lorelai . Best dramady duo ever.

I love Paris. She's an unfailing yet masacisticly likeable bitch. She does indeed need to get laid. I love how well Rory puts up with her. Being raised by Lorelai, Rory now posesses the patience of Job.

I love every single other charactor. Including Michelle(sp) who (you guessed it) I love.

Everyone should give this show a try. Hell I can even forgive it for having no discernable gay charactors.

Gotta Love Gilmores

Postby Italiangirl » Tue Sep 24, 2002 9:47 pm

So, just watched the season premiere of the Gilmore Girls. *Sigh* Lorelei makes me swoon, and she is such a phenomenal actress. I thought the whole breakdown scene at Luke's was done really well, and did not get melodramatic or overblown. Also, her facial expressions alone when she was at the Friday dinner were so expressive and real.

Anyway, it's official. Amy Sherman Palladino (series writer and creator) is a kitten, and got the memo about the Rory/Paris subtext. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when Paris mumbled "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" in the first scene. Plus all of the Rory/Paris hairbrushing, girly bonding. That's new. Heh heh heh.

Also, from hints in this ep and the previews for next ep, it looks like the girls are giving Christopher the freeze. Personally, I'm glad. I'm actually really glad Rory is backing up Lorelei on this one. It will be interesting to see the fireworks next week when Christopher makes an appearance at the Friday dinner with the senior Gilmores.

Anyone else tune in for the premiere and have thoughts?

Oh, and Bob...thanks for the Charmed update. I appreciate it!

And slowontheuptake... you said:

I don't know about anyone else but personally I think Kirk is about as queer as a three dollar bill! lol! Do you remember that crazy film he made last season that the girls premiered at the annual Stars Hollow Film Fest? And also, the "Hay There" skin care product line...come on!

I was actually a little dissapointed in the Gilmore Girls premire. It was a little bit of a downer with a little less comedy in the mix than I prefer. Although it was still very good.

Smallville was suprisingly enjoyable with the exeption of all the badly timed charactor exposition speeches. I'm beginning to agree with the belief the Lex is a repressed homosexual. The evidence is mounting. :eyebrow

Honestly I'd watch (and do watch) the show even if it totaly sucked, Lana and Chloe are so hot.

I watched the entire previous season and if anyone else saw the ep where Lana lost all her inhabitions then you know where my dreams are heading tonight. Heres a hint, it involves a pool and lacy underwear.:drool

Buffy: Let's face it: none of us are ever gonna have a happy, normal

Watched and taped GG. The witticisms and bon mots were flying so fast, I'll have to watch it again to appreciate it all. Gee, angst and humour CAN exist together. Along with a script perhaps twice the weight of your average 1 hour drama.

Rory/Paris? LOL! Memo received, indeed.

This was a great premiere night. I watched the Gilmore Girls and never once considered turning the station to check on Buffy. I did decide to tape it. I may watch it Friday at 8. Over the summer, I have fallen head over heels for Lorelai. And my god, can Paris start a thought and ramble, quite pointedly for a long time. It kinda reminds of Willowbabble. I missed Lane. I enjoyed from start to finish and I felt Lorelai's heartache and next week looks worse, but I know things will get better and that the payoff will be worth it. Am I the only Lorelai/Luke shipper? That is my new darkhorse romance. And yes I LMAO at the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman!" line. Perhaps the GG writers were paying a little attention to the kitten this summer.

On another note, did anyone catch Presdio Med. I am hooked. Anything that opens with a partially naked Dana Delany, transitions to a fight, and switches to a newborn in perail will catch my attention. If you love ER, you'll love this. A new episode airs tommorrow in its regular time slot. This is, so far, the new show that I will be talking up. Moment-to-moment action. Great characters and in my opinion, great writing.

Hopefully, "Deep Space Nine" will be shown soon with the coolest, most kick-ass "Star Trek" charachter of all time Major Kira and, of course, the bisexual Jadzia Dax. "Rejoined" definitely makes up for Treks previously gay "issue" shows.

I most absolutely and totally agree with your description of Major Kira. (Random rant: I feel they should have been locked up for the uniform they made her wear in the latter seasons.)

However I disagree with what you say about Jadzia and Rejoined. Jadzia was a joined Trill (I know you know, but I gotta state my case, heh), it were the symbionts that were still in love when Lenara Kahn and Jadzia Dax met in Rejoined. And of course the previous hosts of the Dax and Kahn symbionts were man and woman, husband and wife. ST DS9 is my favourite of the Star Trek series by far, but in it's 7 years I can't say that this one episode made up for the lack of homosexuality in the Star Trek universe. Of course there was intendant Kira, but she was just another walking cliche, the evil skanky bisexual. Jadzia could have made a great bi/gay character, but for that one ep, which got spoiled for me because it was really a long lost husband and wife tale, she was always chasing after men. Hum, this is my one complaint about Star trek really, well that and Wesley Crusher.

At least out here in LA, UPN is adding Buffy Season 5 reruns to its Sunday lineup, opposite Gilmore Girls Season 1 reruns. What are the odds? :rolleyes I think I'll stick with the GG's myself, and that's only when I feel like watching TV at 7pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, as long as we're making TV recommendations in general, let me put in a vote for Ken Burns American Stories, running Monday night's at 9pm on PBS. They reran the entire Civil War series over the course of this week, and it's just as good as it was back in 1990. :)

K... let me just start by typing I saw a tram riding by in the beginning of Peter Jackson's film "Braindead" that had written "Amber" on it ('Amber tips' to be precise -> I'm not gonna comment on that LOL ;) )

According to my family I'm a tv slave, so I have to reply in this thread...

Gilmore girls: I started watching that show because some kittens mentioned it. Didn't tape it because it's not fantasy, doesn't contain any supernatural elements, literal kick ass girl powr, etc. but my goddesses: excellent acting, heaps of humour, intimate interacting between the characters... Watched a couple of eps, missed the last one, since I was in Milan at that moment (and had to tape some program for my parents), but I found myself asking on the board of my fave channel to know if I'd missed anything vital. The characters might not kick ass literally, they sure do figuratively. I mean: single mum, trying to raise her kid, giving her all the necessary opportunities... Opposing meddling parents, balancing being a parent and a friend towards her daughter... Anyway, who's Paris ? I reckon it's not the Corean girl, due to some depiction. Hope I didn't miss her already. A description would be cool, so I can pay attention. I need to ship some grrls... They've taken Bad Girls away from me too :(

Charmed: Doh ! Spoilers ! Nevermind, guys, I'm a spoiler slut, anyway. So, Piper pregnant, huh... Whatever. Holly's cute, Piper had a nagging stage: hope that changes during the 3th season. They showed a few eps here, then stopped. They'll probably continue after Big Brother. Funny thing is, I let it slip on a board, that it would be wicked if they'd make Paige a lesbian, since I'm deeply irritated by the other Halliwell sisters being such man-eaters, but what can you expect from Spelling... Though he did have Matt on Melrose Place (please) and some gay guy who wanted to test his sexuality with Kelly (Jennifer Garner): the fact that I still remember this is scary, but MP did have Hudson Leick (Callisto in Xena) :) Anyway, cool thing about our tv channel board is there's a true Tara fan there, who'd back me up, if I was complaining about her death, the show, because she was down too. Probably wishful thinking about Paige, though you never know.

They began showing Smallville here too. Saw that Chloe actress somewhere before... Lana looks like an angel too. They don't rate Amber, Aly by far, but still: doesn't hurt. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) was also in Zoë, Duncan, Jack and Jane, which I solely watched for Selma Blair (Xena's Kindred Spirits, Sexual Provocation/Cruel Intentions, Legally blonde, The sweetest thing, etc.) but hey: yeah, he could be gay. Talented actor: I don't wanna come across as being narrow-minded, but he manages to play a bald character and be charismatic... but maybe, probably, that's just easier for males (do remember a bald Belgian miss: she didn't win, but had personality and then some).

Hmm..Gilmore Girls is really a good show. The Lorelie's mother reminds me of my step grandmother, in a very bad way.

babs..no your not the only Lorelei /Luke shipper. :)

But I think Laine and Rory should have hooked up. I mean, it was so obvious, Laine was so completely jealous over Dean initially.

Tara nodded in agreement "She has magic fingers." Then, as though the words had just echoed back to her and sounded not at all right, she perked up and glanced around at the others. "On the keyboard."

Well, I'm with ya'll that GG is a great show. I'd love it if they made Paris a lesbian (or maybe Laine), but it's not likely to happen on the gay unfriendly WB. I guess the Family Friendly Programming Forum had a pretty narrow definition of "Family".

I wouldn't mind if Lorelei and Luke got together, but personally I like Christopher.

I'd also like to see Rory with anyone other than boring Dean or bad boy wannabe Jess. I kind of liked that smarmy guy in season 1 that kept calling her Mary. Forgot his name though (Trevor?)

I am definatly a Luke/Loralie shipper. They are perfect for each other.

Rory should hook up with option number three. She dosn't love 'less entertaining than watching wallpaper peel' Dean. And I'm now not a big fan of Jess, although he's obviously a fan of that blond chick's ass. There has to be a better alternative.

Am I the only one who has adopted Paris as favorite GG charactor? I've always loved her but she is quickly topping the list. I hate how they always tend to dump her storyline. I want to know how the date went.

Anyone else of the opinion that the entire crop of new shows suck.

I do like Firefly (don't hit me) the second show was better than the first and I'm starting to enjoy it.

On the other hand, John Doe? The lead has no charisma and is downright annoying. I held out one and a quarter eps.

Push Navada? I promised myself to try two eps but never bothered.

I know there's more but I'm drawing a blank:hmm . That's always a sign of quality:wink .

I agree DrG that there are a lot of problems with "Star Trek" and homosexuality. But in my own private world with lots of fanfic for help, Normal Universe Dax and Kira are truly bisexual, Xena was resurrected right after "Friend in Need", Clark and Lex are enjoying the hot gay sex, and Willow and Tara are living happily ever after. Who needs TV when you have fanfic?

Postby superherofan » Sat Sep 28, 2002 10:21 pm

Watching "Smallville", many have shouted "GAY!" during the numerous times Clark and Lex stare at one other. Over at Television Without Pity!, it's pretty much considered gayer than "Queer as Folk" US (which for the latter is just an awful, awful, awful show). There is no Lois, and Lana is just, well... if you can't say anything nice. I don't know; if you cah handle Fred and Dawn, maybe you can handle Lana. Chloe's much cooler and infinitely better acted.

Arggh "Smallville", sorry but I just can't stand that show, it's like a lame attempt at copying Buffy season one with a mix of many other shows thrown in. The only character I half like is Lana. Though I can see the Lex/Clark subtext.

Now "Gilmore Girls", how I love that show. I'm still hoping for Lorelai and Luke to get together and, don't hurt me, but I actually like Rory and Jess together! After the finale of the last season I'd be quiet happy if the shows writters were suddenly like, "Dean? Dean who?". He's just so very boring.

"Queer As Folk: the US version", well half of my year level is watching it at my straighter-than-thou Christian highschool so that's saying something. I actually don't mind the show myself, though it does seem to get better each week.

Oooh, Oooh! Alias season premier tonight. Yes! All those not on the Alias bandwagon must join on. Fanfreakentabulus.

I know most people don't like it if they just join on because it's so hard to follow. I've been watching since the first ep so i know exactly whats going on (exept for the stuff I'm not supposed to understand) but I can see how it would be daunting. But the season opener should have an extensive previously and it would only take a couple eps to get the gist anyway. If you wont watch because of confusion then watch for the sexy, kickass double agent who's fight sequences leave me giddy and amazed. Great television!

Okay, I saw Alias for the first time tonight. I figured the start of the new season was my best chance to hop on the train and have some chance of figuring out what the heck was going on.

And I must admit it wasn't half-bad. A few scenes were a bit too MTV-ish for me, but it held my attention well enough to keep me from flipping over to the SG-1 episode playing on my local UPN station, which is what I was watching at that time all summer. We'll see how things go next week.

Meanwhile, there was that show with the redhead who dresses funny and is a really quick study at developing her witchcraft powers - um, I'm talking about Paige Matthews of Charmed, of course. :shy Based on what I've been hearing about Buffy S7, Paige might be more Willow-like than Willow now. Who'd have thought? :confused

Charmed

Postby Italiangirl » Mon Sep 30, 2002 1:06 am

I missed Charmed tonight, I was out and couldn't get back in time to tape or watch. =( I know last year TNT had a thing where they showed the most recent eps like three days later or something...does anyone know if they are still doing that this season, and when?

Also, regarding Paige...I think I've said it before, but I quit watching last year because I was so bitter of the departure of Shannon Doherty from the show, and the crappy way it was handled. I tried to watch for the first three eps, but I was crying and grieving Prue (who was, at the end there, my favorite Halliwell...although, I admit, different sisters held that title during different seasons). ANYWAYS, I couldn't deal with Paige/Rose McGowan at the time because she was too much of a replacement sister.

NOW, HOWEVER, I am a little more emotionally far removed from the Prue situation, and have started watching again, and I must say I really like Paige/Rose. I think the writers are doing a good job with their "Back to the Beginning" storyline, without dropping huge anvils on the viewers. I think Paige's character has breathed new life into a show that was starting to tell the same story every week. The role-reversals are interesting as each sister deals with being in a different role, and it's funnier, and less melodramatic. So, Bob, I'm with you. Paige rocks. Yay Halliwells!

Edited to Add: Regarding Alias, the few episodes I've seen have been really really disturbingly violent, and they turned me off. Surprisingly, all summer long the ABC Family Channel aired repeats in their prime time slot. It aired right after back to back episodes of State of Grace [totally delightful show]. That was curious to me because, um, the Family Channel??? I don't think I would want my kids to watch the show, if I had any. More power to the fans, though!

I thought the Alias premiere was pretty good. Definitely made it for new viewers to get into, with all the flashbacks and little speeches on what everything means. Jennifer Garner is a great actress, and her character kicks butt. Plus, the show plays some really good music. And yes, Alias is a violent show, lots of guns and punches, but it all goes along with the story, I don't suspect we'll see a witch pop up outta nowhere to kill someone.
