Movies

Yeah, the genre of "happy lesbian flicks where one of them DOESN'T die seems to be kind of small, so "Kissing Jessica Stein" was quite a nice change of pace. Also, don't forget "But I'm a Cheerleader."

Blade II - sounds good, lots of gadgets... but my personal dream is the scene where Blade stumbles upon these two really powerful witches who also fight vampires, and the movie suddenly receives an NC-17 rating...

... um, back to the good thoughts... Panic Room - worth seeing?

Hmm. Interesting take on Kissing Jessica Stein from the Slate article. Though I disagree in some ways.

( STOP READING if you plan to see the movie and don’t want to be spoiled…)

.

.

.

.

( OK, fair warning)

But, the problem is Jessica doesn’t “choose” Josh over Helen. Helen dumps her ass. Helen realizes that what they have is just a really close friendship and moves on. And she moves on to…another girl. What the story really is, instead of a romantic comedy, is a story of self discovery for Jessica. It’s less about who she ends up with (because it is left a little ambiguous as to whether she does indeed ride off into the sunset with Josh) and more about how she learns to be a free person who takes risks. How she gets over her “inertia” problem. (Great poem by the way.)

....................
Well, now that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head

Lots of ppl have said that Bound is a great movie...I totally agree! Omg, Gina Gershon is yummy. Hee hee I think I may have to go and watch that movie again later on. I'm still looking for Better than Chocolate, someone rented it from the Blockbuster near my house, and its been gone ever since. I really want that movie. How did everybody like it?

ooooh, one movie I will never ever watch again is Lost and Delirious. I liked it just fine up til that one chick went all 'straight'. And the ending made me cry for weeks. I'd seriously be at work just doing my thing, and then I'd think about that movie for some reason, and have to run to the bathroom for a good cry. I refuse to watch that movie again. Golly, I'm getting disturbed just thinking about it again. :(

Bound! Bound! Bound! Bound! Bound! Gina Gershon! woo hoo happy thoughts now. All better.

I don't know of any movie called The Girl, but there is a pretty good movie called "Girl" starring Dominique Swain about a teenage groupie in the Portland grunge rock scene. It's not really much of a lez flick, not to this lesbian, anyway. It is a fairly well told story of self-discovery, though.

"Mulholland Drive" is out on video on April 9, for those of us who live in uncivilized areas and couldn't see it at their local multiplex because they have too many important works of great cinematic art to show like "Dude, Where's My Car?" for six (SIX!) weeks. Grumble.

Re:Crys

I know exactly how you feel, for days after seeing Lost and Delerious, I'd think of something in it, and then get all sad :

wich to be perfectly honest is one of the reasons I recomend the movie to ppl, it's a good movie, and it stays with you longer then it takes to get out of the couch/chair. I dont want to get into a discussion in how the charaters developed though, since some ppl might not have seen the movie.

Edited to add:

Oh and I just saw Fucking Åmål (Show me love) again and it's still great and puts a smile on my face.

I own both movies Better than Chocolate on video tape and Lost and Delirious on DVD which rocks but anyways everytime I hear Better Than Chocolate mentioned I think of Xita and how she feels about the movie which more and more I agree with as I watch the movie even though I still like it more then her. Also personally as I said before I really like Lost and Delirious despite the ending because it shows how both girls deal with being outed, one stays that way while the other says she is straight cause she can't handle her parents, sister, and other peoples possible reaction.

Hey, I have just seen "Ghost World", which is a fantastic movie. Love Thora Birch, love Scarlett Johanssen (especially her voice...marvelous!).

The movie is really weird, very funny, very cynical.

I just saw Mulholland Drive, and while I admit that it's an amazing movie, am I the only one who was completely confused? I had it until about an hour and 15 minutes into it, and then David Lynch just lost me. So I wasn't really sure what it was about, if anything. God I would love to sit down with Mr. Lynch and watch it again so he could explain it to me. Anybody care to help me with understanding it?

My husband and I watched it last night, and we're both confused too! I, too would love to have someone explain it to me. I felt like there were so many unfinished scenes.

Willow: "She's like this cleavagey slutbomb walking around going 'Ooh. Check me out, I'm wicked cool. I'm five by five.'"

Tara: "Five by five? Five what by five what?"

Willow: "See, that's the thing. No one knows."

Dixie and Jennifer, I'm sure there are other much smarter and articulate kitties on the board who can explain the movie in more detail, but this is basically the key to understanding it.

Ok, so, the first 1hour and 15 minutes (about that) is all a halucination, or a wish list, or a dream, however you want to phrase it, of Diane (Naomi Watts - the cute blonde). The moment when she is on the couch masturbating is arguably the moment when she "wakes" from the "dream". The real world is what exists in that last half an hour or so. She is in love with Camilla (Laura Harring - the hot brunette), and they have had a sexual relationship in the past, but now Camilla is moving on to her relationship with Adam (the movie director). Diane is obviously extremely upset and bitter about the whole thing so basically the first section of the movie is the way she would wish her life to be. She is a talented and successful actress, and Camilla/Rita totally depends on her, instead of the other way round in her real life. Adam's life sucks (he he he he), he can't put a foot right. So, with that in mind, when you watch the first section again you can see how the dynamic in Betty/Rita's relationship is so dependent on Betty's strength, which is probably how she is compensating for her lack of it in real life. Sorry I'm not being that clear. I hope it makes sense. I understand though that there are a lot of loose ends, and narrative lines that are never wrapped up (the guy in the dinner, the guy who accidently shoots all those people, the black book), but this is probably because the first half was orignally shot as a pilot to a tv series, so Lynch was setting up all his characters and narrative which he never had the time to explore.

Hope that sheds a little light.

But it was an awesome movie. I usually hate Lynch's stuff (a side-effect of having to write so many essays on him) but I thought this was incredible. And Naomi Watts was absolutely friggin brilliant...i can't believe she wasn't nominated for an oscar...

Also see the Mulholland Drive Confusion thread for an explanation by Sweetjane. (Wasn't there a Mulholland Drive thread on the old server? Did that get brought over or lost? Multiple MD threads might get consolodated by the mods sometime.)

Edited to change the link to The Mulholland Drive thread because the "confusion" thread was indeed moved there and the old link is defunct.

Just saw "The Girl"

Postby fyrwoman » Wed Apr 17, 2002 11:41 am

A couple of people have asked about this...

Basically it centers around a lesbian artist who falls in lust with a nightclub singer and becomes her lover. They get together for intimate encounters when it's convenient for the singer, who also sleeps with men. The artist is also in an open relationship with another woman. There wasn't much of a plot as far as I could tell, but the leads are attractive (a butch and a femme, a little something for everyone) and there are some well done sexy scenes. The whole thing was filmed in an artsy way, with much attention paid to light, reflection, etc.

I also want to mention that I've read the books that Lost and Delerious and Aimee and Jaguar were based on.

L & D was based on a book called The Wives of Bath, which refers to the name of the school the girls attended.

The book was quite a bit different from the film, especially with regard to the character that Piper played (can't remember her name now.) Originally, the character was a troubled student at the school who would actually dress up as a boy and had everyone convinced that she was her own brother, a caretaker's assistant on the school grounds. The romantic relationship was between this "boy" and the female student, Tory. In the book it was unclear if Tory knew that her "boyfriend" was actually a female classmate. It went on to deal with how she felt more powerful and validated by society when she was acting like a guy. She didn't believe that she was a lesbian, but she loved a girl and wanted to be with her, going to extreme measures to reach that end. The ending was quite different as well but I won't spoil it in case anyone plans on reading it. The book was very weird, but made me think about what the different societal expectations are for men and women.

I liked the film and the book, but they definitely aren't my favorites.

I really enjoyed the Aimee and Jaguar film, though it ended sadly.

I agree with several of you in that When Night is Falling is my all time fave so far.

I also loved Show Me Love, Gia and Incredibly True Adventures...

Bound is one of my very favorite movies & I also love But I'm a Cheerleader and Better than Chocolate, especially the latter. I love all the different stories & characters in BTC and for some reason I really love that there are such massive amounts of sex toys in it. The part with the mom and the vibrator is great and I love the notorious 'butt plug scene' (which is only in the unrated version). I also really want to see Aimee & Jaguar. I loved the book and I can't wait to see the movie. I'm really surprised how many people loved When Night is Falling. I was really excited to see it becaue of all the good things I'd heard about it and it turned out to be one of the very most boring movies I have ever seen.

it's a romantic comedy of one

Bound is one of my favorite movies as well. I remember I saw it for the first time right before the Matrix came out (both were directed by the Wachowski brothers), but I didn't really notice similarities in style and camera shots until I saw Bound for a second time. My brother is a film major so he notices all those things and couldn't believe that I didn't realize that. The commentary track for bound is good to listen to too.

question

Postby anonymous girl » Mon Apr 22, 2002 12:38 pm

now slap me if this was already asked or mentioned... someone earlier mentioned the movie "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" and I was wondering if anyone knew if that was based on the book by Tom Robbins. I haven't read the book or have seen the movie... but I have read some stuff by Tom Robbins and he is great. I would definately try to find the movie if it was based on the book.

no no , autumn, Salmonberries scarred me for life, a certain scene, oh god, better stop thinking before i get nightmares. Cowgirls was bad granted, but it's like an endurance test to see if you can put up with Rain Phoenix's performance. It's bad. It's just sooooooo bad.

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues was a really awesome book, but the movie was kind of lacking. However, the girl who played Bonanza Jellybean (I think it was Rain Phoenix) was really cute.

But I'm a Cheerleader is the funniest movie ever, seriously. I love it!!!

I don't think this has been mentioned. It's dark & twisted & claustrophobic, but I'd recommend an English film called SISTER MY SISTER, which has an amazing performance by Joely Richardson.

I haven't seen PANIC ROOM, but doesn't EVERY film w/ Jodie Foster count as a lesbian film? Ha ha.

As to the worst, my choice would be CLAIR OF THE MOON. Oh my...the cliches...the bad acting...*shudder*
