Bastards. I can actually understand they want to stop people from sharing movies, but not TVshows. As long as you don´t start selling copies it should be possible, just like you can tape it on your VCR. I view it as taping a show from the internet. If there was a way I could watch my favourite US shows directly I would, but I do not want to wait for years hoping they will someday be shown on Dutch TV. If they were to create a way in which I could legally download it for a reasonable fee, I would do that too. If I really like a movie or TV show I will buy the DVD (if it is not insanely expensive like the South Park DVDs here) even if I have a 100 copies of it on my computer, I would want the real thing, but maybe that´s just me.

I hear you there, G-Man. The only thing I use BitTorrent for is fan-subtitled anime ("fansubs"). I feel like I'm not taking any money out of the Japanese studios' hands, because I wouldn't be watching any of their shows at all if it wasn't for fansubs. I don't speak Japanese, and it takes years for a DVD set to come out.

There should be some reasonable way to balance the interests of the studios and the fans, if people would just sit down and work it out. Alas, I don't see that happening any time soon. :(

STupid bastards! they are making by the millions and still they do this. I actually live in a country where the sales of pirated DVDs surpass the sales of originals in some cases. One reason being, imports (Region 1, 2, 4 etc..) cos triple or quad or more than the price of one DVD9 edition (closest to region 1 dvd quality or almost exact replica). Other reasons being the local Region 3 editions that are "approved" by the government censorship board... is mutilated and cut. Why would I pay for a dvd movie that's already been cut ? Also... after sales service and customer service on the side of the black market... could very well be compared to the best restaurants or departmental stalls in the world... other than the fact many of the sales people can't really speak english at all... dvds that have flaws... doesn't play on your player... is swapped for a new one or another movie/series... no questions asked. Plus... the current vendor i get from... .gives me warranty for the series and dvds i get from him... at a slightly discounted price.

I paid about USD18.30 USD for Tru Calling and The L Word. That's actually something around what i can afford. On the shelves, 6 Feet Under and other HBO (darn expensive dvds sets) are selling for a fraction of the price of the original set, depending on how many discs are in one dvd set. The original season 6 of BtVS cost about RM450 (my currency). That's a third of my monthly salary. I'm willing to buy originals when the time is right or when i think the movie is worth me paying a large portion of my monthly salary, like the LoTR:RotK, and various old Tim Burton films.

I don't think the entertainment industry is losing at all. They still report profit every Q of the year. Cinemas are still packed to the brim during the premiere of a movie and after. Everyone in the industry is making tons. Unless they put a claim that they only earn 6 cents or 60 cents per 6 disc dvd set... they can forget about getting rid of file sharing and piracy.

I don't think the music industry is losing money either. I do know that all i see is the price of music getting more and more ridiculous. That's probably the reason why people are turning to the black market or p2p.

Employers these days are taking advantage of the fact that they are in power of who they want to employ and how much they want to pay (really really little). Here in Malaysia, a foreign university degree holder gets a starting pay from RM800 a month...excluding tax deductions and other deductionts. That's very little and sometimes a clerk earns more. Extremely low earning power and extremely high spending power... who's not to support blackmarket?

Heh, I remember that show "back in the day". It was purely goofy fun but then again, that sums up most of Campbell's roles. Bruce is great.

As for Tru Calling, I'd only saw the episode "Starcrossed". I wasn't actually aware it had such a huge following and of course, that's a good thing.

I was looking forward to Tru coming back and didn't realize it wasn't until like the night before it was supposed to air...needless to say I was very disappointed and annoyed. No more weekly Eliza watchage, for now anyway :| Fox wanted to put more reality crap on and now this Point Pleasant show...which I think looks pretty stupid *sigh*

Fox might show unaired "Tru Calling" episodes

Tru Is Dead, But Not Gone
Quote:
Gail Berman, president of entertainment at Fox, confirmed to reporters that the supernatural series Tru Calling won't be coming back—but she added that six as-yet-unaired second-season episodes will eventually see the light of day. "We finished six episodes of Tru Calling, and we anticipate putting them on air at some point," Berman told reporters at Fox's winter press tour Jan. 17 in Universal City, Calif.
I know that I won't be watching Fox's Thursday lineup without Tru.

The first episode of the aborted Season 2 has made it onto the internet. It showed up today on the USEnet groups alt.binaries.multimedia and alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer. My guess is that it's available on BitTorrent, too, but I haven't looked.

The episode is called "Perfect Storm." No word on whether or not the remaining episodes will follow.

Given that "North Shore" has tanked and PeePee is tanking in the ratings, maybe Fox will decide to put Tru back on. It was growing an audience before it was replaced by the aformentioned crap. I felt the same about the dreck that followed "Dark Angel". Fox better hope that people don't tire of American Idol.

Season 2 Complete Spoilers

Postby BBOvenGuy » Tue Mar 15, 2005 11:44 am

Okay folks, I've now downloaded and watched all six episodes of the aborted Tru Calling Season 2. I think they came from TV New Zealand, but I'm not sure. Here's the rundown:

Episode 1 "Perfect Storm" - An absolutely terrible way to launch the season, tossing away last year's theme of Tru helping people and instead going with Tru vs. Jack in a game of who can do a better job of manipulating people in order to "win." However, there are several important new plot elements introduced - Tru's dad has moved his law practice back to town so he can help Jack, and he hires Harrison as an investigator. Davis pulled some strings so that Tru could start auditing classes at the local med school, where she meets some new friends. Davis has a run-in with the new departmental psychologist, who just happens to be an attractive woman. We also learn that "the rules" require Jack to save people as well as kill people - if someone died before, he makes sure they die again, and if they lived before he has to make sure they live again.

Episode 2 "Grace" - Jack tries to get Tru out of the way by framing her for murder. (Yes, I know what you people are thinking, Eliza in handcuffs...) Naturally, Tru figures out how to get out of it and save the day. Not a very substantial story, but much better than Ep1. Oh, and there's some sparkage between Davis and the lady shrink.

Episode 3 "In the Dark" - Harrison and Davis throw Tru a surprise party in the morgue. There's a power failure, and in the darkened room someone asks Tru for help. The day rewinds before she can see who it is. On the rewind, Jack leads Tru and Davis on two different wild goose chases, preventing Tru from finding out who the dead person is until it's too late. We also find out that the lady shrink is a "mole" who is working with Jack. Oh, and guess who wrote this episode, the first one where Tru loses? None other than Calamity Jane Espenson.

Episode 4 "Last Good Day" - The tables are turned when a dead young woman asks Jack for help. Tru finds out that when the day rewinds, Jack sees everything that the dead person saw before. It turns out that the woman has leukemia and wants to kill herself, and she wants Jack to help her make it look like an accident so that her sister can collect on her insurance policy. Tru finds another way to get the woman some money (betting on a boxing match when she already knew who would win), and Jack convinces the woman to go on living. Alas, fate steps in - the woman accidentally winds up hanging from a ledge on top of a building, with Jack holding onto her. He wants to save her, but he's not strong enough to go against his "duty," so he lets her die again.

Episode 5 "Enough" - There's been some sparkage between Tru and one of her med school buddies, so naturally he gets killed. When he doesn't ask Tru for help, she goes hunting around the city for other dead people, so that when the day rewinds she can save her new boyfriend as well. She finally finds one and saves the day. Meanwhile, the lady shrink continues "Operation Seduce Davis."

Episode 6 No title given - The last episode of Tru Calling is a Christmas show. One of the cadavers in the med school lab asks Tru for help. Obviously, since the person's been dead for quite a while, Tru can't save her, so she has to figure out what she's supposed to do instead. Since Tru's not going to be preventing any deaths, Jack decides to help her out. Together, they catch the woman's killer. Meanwhile, Harrison catches his dad talking to Jack, but Jack fixes it on the rewind. Davis tells the shrink lady about Tru, but doesn't let Tru know he told her. The med school boyfriend is acting strangely, but we don't find out why. The episode - and the series - ends with all the characters, good and bad alike, spending Christmas Eve together in Tru's apartment.

And there you have it...

Yep Tru is back and it's replacements are dead or dying with "North Shore" cancelled and "Point Pleasant" going on hiatus and no doubt soon to be cancelled. I hope Tru will do much better than those two (though it can hardly do worse) and show Fox the error of their ways. Even if Tru is gone maybe they will give Eliza another series.

FOX Temporarily Resurrects 'Tru Calling' starting March 31

Postby Incarnadine » Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:37 pm

FOX Temporarily Resurrects 'Tru Calling'

(Tuesday, March 22 02:46 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) When FOX Entertainment President Gail Berman insisted to TV critics back in January that the remaining episodes of "Tru Calling" would air at some point, many a reporter chuckled. Well, Berman may be departing FOX for a creative gig at Paramount, but she's true to her word. The much maligned and already effectively cancelled "Calling" will return on Thursday, March 31, replacing the equally maligned and equally effectively cancelled "Point Pleasant."

Originally scheduled to air at 9 p.m. ET on Thursdays after "The O.C." this fall, "Tru Calling" was yanked first for "North Shore" and then for "Point Pleasant" this winter.

"What changed for us was when we saw 'Point Pleasant" we really felt we had a show that was incredibly compatible with 'The O.C.," so our thoughts changed, not so much about 'Tru Calling,' but about the possibility of not only having an exciting show and a winner at 8 o'clock, but also something that could really make headway for us at 9 o'clock," Berman said in January by way of explanation.

It turns out that that experiment was a failure. Despite getting a reasonably large sample for its post-"American Idol" sneak preview, "Point Pleasant" averaged all of 4.09 million viewers per episode, shedding nearly half of the audience from its more successful lead-in, "The O.C." Those numbers were right in line with the viewership for "North Shore" in the same time period.

Last season, "Tru Calling" averaged 4.55 million viewers.

The drama, which stars Eliza Dushku as a young woman who can relieve days whenever a corpse asks her to, will begin its six-episode final run with a two-hour premiere on March 31. It will take its planned 9 p.m. slot the following week.

"Point Pleasant" remains tentatively scheduled to air this Thursday before vanishing for the foreseeable future.

Veronica Mars: Look at you, all helpful.

Logan Echols: Hey, your peskiness being unleashed on Conner brings me joy. Annoy, tiny blonde one, annoy like the wind!

So, isn't it even remotely possible that Big Ratings Numbers could persuade the shite-for-brains (i.e. FOX suits) to pick Tru up again? :pray

GG Now, does anyone know how to make Big Ratings Numbers happen? I'm gonna go tout T.C. on my blog, but I think the show may require a tad more P.R. to herald its return! :explode Out

Even if the suits at FOX wanted to bring the show back, it would still depend on whether they could reassemble the cast and crew. Chances are that everyone was released from their contracts when FOX cancelled the show, and so they've all moved on to other gigs by now. :(

And so continues FOX's abysmal track record with SF/F, X-Files notwithstanding...

It was indeed cool to have this back on and it definitely deserved to be renewed and not have Point Unpleasent on the air instead. What a farce. Eliza is great, but I also have to say they sure make her run a lot. And whoever decided that what they REALLY need is to handcuff her and then make her run is a GENIUS! Run Eliza, run! :)

4/7 "In the Dark"

Postby Gatito Grande » Thu Apr 07, 2005 8:38 pm

Ooooh, I knew she was evil! I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! (The shrink, Carrie: she was coming on way too strong w/ Davis)

I had some mixed feelings about this ep: I didn't like to see Tru and Davis arguing for example (his "if Carrie dies because you weren't here, I'll never forgive you" was over-the-top). Shouldn't Tru have been running for a pole, or something, to push the maintainance man out of the electrical connection? :confused (Lame-o shouldn't have been working around electricity, if he's stupid enough to work 1) w/o protective gloves, and 2) in water!! :crazy )

But on the whole, this show just continues to improve (yeah, for what we have left of it :sigh ). Like how Tru figured out that the notes were a Jack ploy (and clever of Jack to re-intro the Harrison-gambling-problem trick: Jack really is SCUM). Looking forward to see how the Carrie-is-working-with-Jack angle plays out (is she also working w/ Tru's dad?)

May I say that I'm starting to like "to-the-point" Avery? She's sharp: the fact that she ALREADY noticed "how Tru seems to know things that she shouldn't" is very intriguing.

GG So, am I hoping for some Tru/Avery subtext? You wouldn't be wrong!!! :p Out

Just hope Tru won't become interested in her anatomy pal w/ the 1970s hair (the guy who's not getting married now): was afraid they might be hinting in that direction, too. :rolleyes

Postby Incarnadine » Thu Apr 14, 2005 10:28 pm

Another solid episode and a very interesting curve they threw into this one. I know I was pretty surprised to see the recently deceased ask Jack for help. Eliza was her usual gorgeous and spunky self and it was interesting to see that Jack still has some humanity left. This season is leaps and bounds better than the early episodes of season 1 which makes the fact that it's almost over even more depressing.

Veronica Mars: Look at you, all helpful.

Logan Echols: Hey, your peskiness being unleashed on Conner brings me joy. Annoy, tiny blonde one, annoy like the wind!
