I made my parents watch it this week, as they were here and I refused to miss it just to be sociable.
My dad loved it, and my mum spent the entire time trying to remember what Queen Victoria had been in. I googled in the end to shut her up. Turns out it was The Liver Birds.
I got the Balamory reference, but my dad had to have it explained to him. Bless.

Also he called himself 'Dr James McCrimmon', so presumably that would be how he would be remembered. The only 'Doctor' aspect could be the 'Sir Doctor of TARDIS' bit, but that might get forgotten over time.

Without seeing the episode you are mentioning, I did get the Jamie McCrimmon reference (I've even met him!) - and still seriously jealous! Makes me a bit 'homesick' for the old days.
I know there's a few of us 'old school' Whovians around - I wonder what the newbies would think of it.

Meeting Frazer Hines - how cool is that!! I'm going to a DW Convention in July (my first ever ) and the guests include Janet Fielding (Tegan), Wendy Padbury (Zoe) and Anneke Wills (Polly) from the Classic Series. I'm very excited about it (in a non-geeky way, of course )
I've been to two Doctor Who-specific conventions, and have seen three Doctors in the process - Jon Pertwee, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. Colin Baker is scheduled as the guest of honor next February.
And yeah, I thought about that too, that "Dr. James McCrimmon" was how he'd identified himself. But still, it'll be interesting to see what Russell Davies says Torchwood's been doing all this time.
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...
Congrats on your first convention, Feena - I did go to a couple back in the 80s and met (in order) - Patrick Troughton, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Jon Pertwee. I'm pleased to report all four were marvelous to meet, had wonderful stories to tell and were very generous with their fans. Baker especially as he'd just found out he'd been sacked from show!
I'm really looking forward to it, I'd love to go to one of the bigger ones sometime, where one of the doctors themselves are there.
I can't really see Chris Eccleston doing one anytime soon, but I think David Tennant might. He seems really into doing stuff for the show like the commentaries. Have you listened to them on the BBC site, if you can't see them on the TV *winks at non-UK watchers*

Okay, so Russell Davies is setting things up for Torchwood in this episode. But if The Doctor is supposedly banished from the British Empire and the Torchwood Institute is supposed to be on the lookout for him, what the heck were they doing when he was UNIT's scientific advisor all those years? Yes, I know perfectly well that nobody had invented the Torchwood Institute back when they were making those episodes, but Russell Davies knows his Doctor Who continuity. He's got to have an explanation somewhere down the line. Doesn't he?
Spoiler:
It may be that Torchwood bears the same relationship to UNIT as MI5 does to the regular army. Part of their purpose could be to stay out of sight and grab what alien technology they can when they get the chance. For that reason alone they would want to stay below the Doctors' radar since he certainly wouldn't approve of that sort of thing, he certainly wouldn't have let them build the big gun the used in 'The Christmas Invasion'.
Thought this weeks epsiode was a hoot, killer monks, a werewolf, Rose's appalling effort at a Scots accent and Jamie McCrimmon from Balamory.
Meanwhile, Outpost Gallifrey is quoting reports from several sources that Jetix Europe - a Walt Disney Co. property - will produce a 26-episode CGI animated K9 series. K9's original co-creator Bob Baker - who went on to write Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, among other things - is onboard for the project. The one downside - I'm not sure I like the souped-up look of K9's new incarnation:

UK Gold having been showing old episodes from the classic series (for years I think!) and they reached the first SJS stories with Jon Pertwee last weekend. I'm in the middle of her second one Invasion of the Dinosaurs (fantastic FX!) and it's made me look forward to School Reunion even more.
And remember, this is the first time in just about forever that we get to see something before everyone else!!

ASH was fantastic, right from the very beginning ("You poor child. You poor... thin... child.") Hey, if they can bring Cassandra back to cross swords with the Doctor again, mabye they can bring ASH back, too.
Things I liked:
Rose and Sarah Jane fighting over the Doctor and then bonding. Mickey realizing that he's "the tin dog." Mickey and K9 ("We are in a car" ... "We are in a car" ... "Hey wait a minute, we're in a car!") Rose realizing what the future holds for her, and the Doctor talking about "the curse of the Time Lords."
Basically, I loved the whole thing. The one thing that looked a bit odd is that perhaps David Tennant played the Doctor a bit too well, because there he was acting like the natural extension of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker when he's so much younger. It was the right way to play it, but it looked a bit odd.

There was a studied malevolence there that we only glimpsed at in BtVS when Giles went into 'Ripper' mode. He makes a very good 'Baddy'. In fact, if it was'nt for the big reunions he would have stolen the episode. Hopefully we'll see him again........ as we did'nt see him dissolve into mush or blow up......

Absolutely. He didn't even need to open his mouth. So evil. I loved when he called K9 the "shooty dog thing."
Spoiler:
I was expecting the new K9 to be completely redesigned but suppose it wasn't worth it if we would only see him for a few seconds at the end of the episode.

Live in my house. I'll be your shelter. Just pay me back with one thousand kisses.
I mean really, how freaking cool was that episode.
I alsomst forgot ASH was even in it. I was to busy bouncing around going "OMG it's Sarah Jane! OMG it's K9!!!!"
I did love the Doctor's line in the pool scene. "I am so old and used to be so full of mercy..." or something. It is certainly an evolution we saw through the years. You really get the feeling that CE/DT Doctor's have seen just a little too much.
Great stuff.

I've been AWOL, so here's my quick revies of the eps so far, before I get even more behind.
Spoiler:
New Earth: Loved. Doctor in the 'shower', Cassandra!Rose being slutty, camp!Doctor, tons of innuendo 'so many parts... and hardly used!', tons of silliness, tons of shipping, bit of drama... what's not to like? Only bit that bothered me a little was Rose's gushing at the beginning ('can I just say... travelling with you... I love it'), which seemed an eensy bit OTT to me, but hey, not exactly going to ruin the episode. Other than that, can't fault it.
Tooth and Claw: Wasn't so keen on this one - nothing wrong with it, per se, just not my kind of episode I suppose. The werewolf was impressive, but I found its human form much scarier - I think it's the black eyes. Creepy. I loved that they had a reference to Bad Wolf; made me bounce up and down on the sofa. And then that whole Torchword explanation thing at the end... some people have said it was too much, but personally it just made me go squeeeee.
School Reunion: Wow. Best episode yet, without a doubt. Love love love love LOVE. Couldn't possibly list everything I liked, but one highlight was 'shooty dog thing'. Best. Line. Ever. ASH was a fabulous villain, the plot was better than I thought it would be, and there were plenty of weapy moments - though it didn't make me cry, because I've never seen the old series with Sarah Jane so I didn't quite have the emotional background. Very heavy stuff though. And the Doctor almost saying 'love'. That was intense. I am, however, now fully converted to the wonder that is K9. My Dad's been a total fanboy about K9 ever since we heard that there'd be a K9 episode, and now I understand why. So brilliant!
Also, I love how they keep showing that The Doctor and Rose are getting too cocky... RTD has said that he's setting them up for a big fall this series, and I can totally see it already. The Doctor has no mercy left? Eeep.
Has anyone else noticed the moon references? New World: green moon, universal symbol for hospital Tooth and Claw: whole werewolf storyline pretty much revolves around the moon School Reunion: huge shot of the full moon behind the bats on the roof
Ok, that was a very randomly thrown-together bunch of thoughts that probably made no sense, but there you go.
One more thing...
There are internet wars all the time but I thought this one was rather special and worth sharing.
Apparently, Doctor Who has gay agenda. (The whole kerfuffle goes on for 15 pages, which is ridiculous, so there's a nice little summary here if you want a quick overview of what all the fuss is about.)
I don't know whether to be greatly offended or greatly amused, so I am going for both.
It's the kind of homophobia that crosses the line from offensive into just freakin' hilarious. It just amuses me that people like this actually manage to get out of bed on the right side every morning.
These people seem to be primarily worried that their children might catch the disease of homosexuality just from watching slightly camp tv. One person even goes as far as to say that having subtle gay innuendo in a TV show that's not even primarily meant for children anyway would be like having porn in Blue Peter. The crazy, it burns!
It amuses me greatly that homophobes can see this much 'gay propoganda' when even I didn't catch all the slashy moments they're referring to.
Plus I love the idea of The Doctor going on a gay pride parade.

Oh yeah, some people seem to be living on a different planet. I've been watching Rent on DVD and couldn't believe that they digitally removed saliva from a kiss between two guys. It sounds like something from Doctor Who. Beware the gay saliva!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep missing the camp in Doctor Who. All those years of watching musicals must have desensitised me to it.

Several sources are naming Christopher Eccleston as the star of a new six-part remake of The Prisoner. It'll be interesting if it turns out to be true. Actually, I think he'll fit better as Number Six than he did as the Doctor. His Doctor is looking a bit too edgy in comparison to David Tennant, but edgy is just what Number Six needs.
Besides, I can already hear him shouting, "I am not a number! I am a free man!"
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...
hmm, I wonder if they'll shoot it at Portmeirion [the original location] I doubt it somehow.... when the film was being bandied about a couple of years ago, the MD of the village told me that it was unlikely to happen there as the film producers were being so picky about what they wanted and wanted changing that the company told them where to go [ as in away].

That was magical. Each episode of Doctor Who this year has been so different - and I cried *again*!!! This was wonderful, and I think one of my favourites ever.
*thinks....I seem to be saying that a lot this year*
There's not been the fan-meltdown I thought there would be at Outpost Gallifrey....but give it time
bah, I missed the start due to the BBC putting it on earlier than normal. I guess that'll teach me to assume I know what time it's coming on and not check the schedule
Well what I saw was very good. I'll have to try to remember to catch one of the repeats
