Well speaking as a "Trading Spaces" addict, there was a lesbian couple last season on the show. HOWEVER, they got the infamous "Hay Wall" design a la Hildi the Princess of Darkness. So, that might have scared off any new gay and lesbian couples.

Heehee. The "Hay Wall." I always get a little frightened when Hilda is designing. Although, I will say this. No matter how bad I may think Hilda can be, she has nothing on Dez from season 1. That woman was atrocious. Did anyone see the scary hand moldings on the plum mantle? Now that was frightening.

You can stomp my ass into obvlivion, but that doesn't mean I'll put up with your shit.

Xita, you hit it right on there with one of the big things that pissed me off about Chasing Amy. If Ben Affleck and Jason Lee had got it on, I might have given Kevin Smith the benefit of the doubt with the whole "Look, I've made a movie about people exploring their sexuality" thing. That's the kind of movie I was hoping for, and it's not at all what was delivered. It was just lame and insulting, and who really wants to watch a movie that purports itself to be a romantic comedy where the protagonist is a misogynist asshole throughout? Then again, I'm sure Joss would enjoy it. Bleh. But then that's one of my big problems with KS's movies in general. Detestable male protagonists. I didn't even make it 15 minutes into Clerks because I loathed the main character so much.

Ever hear the rumour about "Chasing Amy" being written after Kevin Smith tried (and of course, failed) to get actress Guinevere Turner into bed?

(she's gay by the way)

Her IMDB profile is here:

Of course, Mr. Smith denies it!

Some new stuff...

Postby superherofan » Mon Nov 25, 2002 7:03 pm

It looks like Debbie Allen and Sally Struthers will play a couple on Lifetime's "The Division" on a January 19th episode, according to this Yahoo! article.

Also, I have to recommend Margaret Cho's newest standup show "Notorious C.H.O." which just came out on DVD. Completely LMAO. It's extremely queer/female/plus-size positive.

Hail Master Miyazaki!

Postby Blue Pariah » Tue Nov 26, 2002 1:13 am

I finally saw Spirited Away today. Go see it. Just go. I can't even begin to describe it. The almost dream-like logic and pacing denies any attempt to. Just beautiful from beginning to end. And without the over-arching sense of melancholy that makes Princess Mononoke more of an acquired taste. Plus, some of the funniest scenes from any Miyazaki movie. I love the fact that even when he does slapstick, it still manages to be subtle.

I second superherofan's recommendation about "Notorious C.H.O." Margaret Cho's humor is totally uninhibited, and she has important stuff to say about Hollywood's obsession with stick-figured women. I also recommend her CD, "Drunk With Power." Very funny.

Sapphic turn on Smallville???

Postby runnerbird » Wed Nov 27, 2002 10:20 pm

This just hit my radar.. thought I'd post it...

Well, it ain't Chloe and Lana, but it'll do...

According to planetout.com:

"Queers love the WB's drama "Smallville" because of its main

character -- a young, hunky and occasionally shirtless Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student harboring a secret that makes him different from the rest of the student body. But now "Smallville" is getting what every WB series needs -- a lesbian plotline. The lovely Lana Lange (Kristen Kreuk) will become the object of the series' first same-sex crush in an upcoming episode, currently titled "Visage." Rumor has it the plot focuses on a mysterious friend from Lana's past who returns to town after deciding she wants to be Lana's lesbo love. Using the paranormal powers given to her during Smallville's meteor shower, Lana's special friend will go to great lengths to get some girl-girl action."

Hmmm...

Ooo I may have to actually watch that show now... hehe. If anyone caught tonights episode of Birds of Prey (RIP), a friend of Dinah's in high school told her she was a lesbian.

Postby nepthys12 » Sat Nov 30, 2002 10:58 am

This is a horribly misleading summary, to say the least. *sigh*

I have read parts of the script. Basically, the plot is this: a lesbian with shapeshifting powers has an obsessive crush on a straight girl, Lana Lang. Tina (the lesbian) shapeshifts into Lana's ex-boyfriend to try and hook up with her, and also ties up Lana's current male love interest Clark just to get him out of the way.

Granted, what I read was an earlier script, so it may be toned down a lot before it's aired, but nothing I saw was even remotely giving a positive image of a lesbian. Quite the opposite.

I'm replying a bit late, but I'm pretty sure you were watching the weekend syndication of Buffy, which is generally carried by local stations not by the network (it just might be on your UPN station, whereas I get it on my WB station). The syndication runs (including the weekday run on FX) are edited for extra ad time and cut out little bits here and there. It was weird seeing that scene (which I think I caught that same weekend, and again in the Thanksgiving Day Buffy marathon on FX) with some of the lines missing.

They generally cut lines that aren't important to the plot (which doesn't mean they aren't important to fans) which often means little funny one-liners by Xander and Anya or some of the more famous funny exchanges like about a vampire's personality having nothing to do with who they were when they were alive... well, actually... that's a good point. Of course, they might also cut some not-so-famous lines and we just aren't as likely to notice. At least they had the decency not to cut the kiss from syndication!

I think UPN aired The Body in their regular Buffy timeslot around this time last year (or am I confused? I know UPN aired some big episodes from past seasons (WB) to fill in around Thanksgiving through Christmas, but I'm not 100% The Body was among them), and I don't think they were edited down for those network reruns.

I think there was a thread for the syndication runs on FX (and presumably others like the weekend runs), but I can't find it.

Yeah I saw the episode of Birds in which Dinah's friend Gabby admitted to liking the other girl she was lab partners with.

I guess I watched to many ME productions, I expected someone to come running in and shoot her at that point. But to my surprise it was niether played up from ratings or shock. It was just a matter-of-fact statement.

But don't worry, Angel will be in that time slot and I am certain that it will do something to maintain the status-quo.

Wickedly sad to see BoP getting the axe. I thought, of all the drek spewed out these days by the studios, BoP had real promise (and some 'wow' eye candy) . Hasn't anyone figured out the reason we have TV dramas and comedies is that real life is boring. I wish they'd axe every reality :puke TV show - bored now

The Space Channel (Cdn cable) compresses it's shows. They run BtVS weekdays in re-run. They claim they show the entire episode (no dialogue cuts), but 'shave' off a specific number of frames per second so they can air a full episode in less time, with no loss of visual integrity. Space offers 10 minutes of "space new and events" - every hour. They can do this because of the frame clipping. Apparently this is becoming a more common practice even on first run shows, allowing the networks to squeeze in more commercial time (up to 5 minutes in a 60 minute program).

Fried Green Tomatoes

Postby miawillow » Mon Dec 23, 2002 10:57 pm

I just finished watching the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes". It is one of the best movies ever, so if you haven't seen it beg, borrow, or steal a copy and watch it. If you have seen it, do you think that the character of Idgy was in love with Ruth? I know that they loved each other as best friends, but it really seems to me that there was something more between them. Maybe I'm just imaging things. Let me know what you think!

Miawillow, you should read the book. It answers your question with rather more detail than the movie went into. Although it was still, yeah, pretty freaking clear that they were in love. :)

Here is an interesting interview with Rita Mae Brown

home.houston.rr.com/blase...tamae.html

While in Hollywood, Rita Mae went to a party hosted by Marlo Thomas to support the Equal Rights Amendment. It was there she met Fannie Flagg, a '60s comedian and later the author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. She fell in love with her "at first sight." Sadly, it didn't work out, because Fannie's "just so homophobic," she says. "Well, you know, Fannie's almost 60, and it's just a different generation's outlook. They were already getting established in their careers when we were in our teens and struggling with the Viet Nam War and civil rights. There's a grand canyon between us," she continues. "It doesn't mean we don't love each other, [it just means] we will never see the world quite the same because of our tremendous losses and disillusionment and then the realization that 'Oh my god, we gotta fight back.'"

LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes. I saw the film (several times) before reading the book, and while, yes, the book is more explicit about the relationship between Ruth and Idgie, I liked the way it was handled in the film.

The special edition DVD includes a commentary from director Jon Avnet talking about that food fight basically being the sex scene! The DVD also has really cute interviews with Mary Louise Parker and Mary Stuart Masterson and they clearly became good friends.

So what on earth has the lovely Mary Stuart Masterson been up to? ML Parker got to be on West Wing, but MSM seems to have disappeared!!

The Hours

Postby xita » Fri Dec 27, 2002 1:02 pm

Only one movie I am looking forward to now, the hours.

Julianne Moore plays a married woman who comes to terms with her sexuality but really it's a movie about 3 women and how their lives become entwined with Virginia Wolf's Mrs. Dalloway. Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are in it. I can't recognize nicole, she looks very different.

Saw The Hours last night last show. It's not in wide release yet. I really liked Nicole Kidman's performance. It was so good. And Xita, thanks for saying the part of Juliannne Moore's character discovering her sexuality. It was really subtle in the film. I thought she was a woman drowning in her marriage and motherhood, not the grappling with sexuality issue. We had THX sound so the music at the beginning was like way too loud, that's my only complaint. Anyway, check this movie out for the talented women portraying troubled women. Meryl Streep and Alisson Janey (West Wing) are sig o's in the film.

Just rented the DVD today; new player and all, I wanted to get something I'd been putting off, and I was in the right melancholy mood for this.

So touching yet sad, and also such an incredible journey for them. I do look at all the happy moments thay did get and feel renewed about the power of love.

If these two could find each other, love each other, in that world... it's inspiring, in a way.

Lovely piece of film, all around.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but that never stopped me before, so here goes. Wish I had a scanner.

From EW's latest {1/3/2003} on the TV show "Fastlane":

On the Air

The latest news from the TV beat BY LYNETTE RICE

A Girl-Girl Thing

Fox's Fastlane will get freaky in mid-January when it pits Tiffany Thiessen's Billie against a lesbian criminal! In a Jacuzzi! Wearing practically nothing! Luring more male viewers wasn't the primary goal (though Fastlane could use the help in that category, since it ranks only No. 40 among all shows watched by men ages 18 to 49): By sending Billie undercover to catch a gay burglar (Not Another Teen Movie's Jaime Pressly), the writers can finally explore her sexuality. "We want to hint at something in Billie's character - is she a bisexual becuase she's doing her job, or is she a lesbian?" teases exec producer John McNamara, who says Fox's standards and practices department gave them major leeway to tell the story (so look for plenty of making out). "One thingabout the show that's worked is that it is not afraid to be outrageous when it needs to be outrageous."

There is a small pic in the mag of Pressly & Thiessen getting up-close and personal in said Jacuzzi.

Make of this what you will kittens. Sure it smacks of retings desperation, but maybe this could be the beginning of a long-term lesbian character.

And may I also say I love Ezboard's new and easier way to use Ezcodes though I can't figure out how to get the sarcasm font to show up yet.
