I followed the link and had problems recognizing her, also. Then I read today that she wore a nose prosthesis because Virginia Woolf had a rather prominent nose.

I find it amazing how easy it is to change the appearance of someone just by changing stuff like that.

Nicole herself said that the paparazzi waiting at the shooting location had no idea who she was, when she went outside with the "new" nose.

I was reading some reviews of The Hours... apparently there's quite a bit of interesting sexuality considerations in all 3 storylines.



It actually gave up some spoilers at one point, so I'll just stop now and let you all see the movie, which I think will be quite good.

The nose thing is really interesting. I remember when Jennifer Gray came back from obscurity for that one show and she looked NOTHING like the girl from Dirty Dancing. And she said all she'd had was a nose job. It was really hard to believe. I could see that wasn't her nose but it's amazing how everything about Nicole looks different.

I watched this last night at the Sundance channel (my guess is that's going to be on again soon, if you want to check it out). And I have to say that Margareth Cho is hilarious! I heard about her before, but had never seen her in action. I was during the whole thing.



I was amazed at her talent and intelligence at making you laugh while talking about serious problems (homophobia, racism, the "supermodel stereotype", and others) and passing the right messages about them. I felt like, for once, I could see someone on my side making fun of the "others"...



Really worth watching it.

Thanks for the heads up, sheila wt. I hope that Sundance will be showing Margaret Cho's latest show, "Notorious C.H.O." soon, too. If you have a little extra cash, the "Notorious C.H.O." DVD is well worth buying for the extras, including a hilarious audio commentary by Margaret's mother. (Played by Margaret herself, naturally.)

I love Margaret Cho! Of course I do. How could I not?



I have to say, though, I think I'm the One that I Want is funnier than Notorious C.H.O. If for no other reason than Gwen. That bit was so outrageously funny, I fear Margaret can never top that for me.



Quickest way to make my knees buckle and make me collapse laughing? Just say it: Hi, my name is Gwen and I'm here to waaaash your vagina.



I like the way she weaves serious social commentary into her humor. Like the best of classic Whoopi Goldberg. It's humor that's not just funny, it also makes you think and maybe challenges some of your perceptions.



And it's such sweet revenge after what they did to her when her sitcom was on. They told her she wasn't thin enough or pretty enough or Asian enough...essentially that she wasn't good enough the way she was. That she had no appeal. Please.



She is immensely appealing to a huge range of people. And she's built a fantastic career on being who and what she naturally is. I respect the hell out of her. And I will support Margaret Cho's projects for the rest of my life, no matter what she does.

Yes, I'm recommending a movie called Men With Brooms.

It's a very silly Canadian movie about curling (yes, that funny sport that made it into the Olympics) and the reason I'm recommending it here is because there's a very short, sweet little love story that's played out in the background. Blink and you'd miss it really, but the actors put such sweet emotion and flirtation into their roles. I liked it. I do mean background. These are characters who appear in a few scenes throughout the movie and maybe have one or two conversations. I couldn't even tell you their names...

Or it's possible that I was pie-eyed from champagne and saw sweetness and mush where there was nothing! Did I mention that they were women? Nope, ok they were women.

And I'll admit that the movie made me laugh even though it was so silly. So if you see it and hate it, please be forewarned! It IS silly. Leslie Nielson's in it. Which explains a lot.





I forgot!

Chicago is quite deliciously sleazy. Queen Latifah will knock your socks off.

I'll second the Men With Brooms recommendation, Cicca. I think the two characters you mention are Polly and Constable Darte, but I defer to those who have a copy of the film handy. I laughed thoughout the film.

1. "The Two Towers"--I highly recommend this for anyone who liked "Fellowship of the Ring"

2. "Darkness Falls" (=new film with Emma Caulfield)--any "buzz" yet about this?

Oh my god! I just saw 'The Two Towers' and i was like, going into the film thinking "i hope there's a bit of homoerotic subtext in this one". Because of course, it's all over "The Fellowship of the Ring" with y'know, Sam lovin' Frodo , and Legolas lovin' Aragorn but being all jealous when his mourning over Boromir's death... So... y'know, I'm going in all hopeful, and my gf's telling me to calm down so i don't start wolf whistling whenever Frodo and Sam come onto the screen but OH MY GOD! IT WAS SO BLATENTLY OBVIOUS!



For starters, the film is just filled with all this phallic imagery, it's called "The Two Towers" for crying out loud! And there's the love between Frodo and Sam, Sam being all butch protecting him at every moment, and at the end when he calls himself "Your Sam!"



But then! There's all the love between Aragorn and Legolas again, whenever they look at each other it's like they just want to pash, but there's that little scene at the end when Gimmli and Aragorn are about to attack the army and Gimmli says "TOSS ME! TOSS ME!..... don't tell the elf"... HE HE HE HE! I was rolling on the floor at the point!



But homoeroticness aside, I liked the film, but I preferred the first film. This one seemed to meander a bit too much, and had too many token Liv Tyler scenes... (as much as i love Liv, it was just a bit out of place).



Anyway, Have a nice weekend everybody!

Oh yeah, "The Two Towers" is great. I loved "The Fellowship of the Ring" too.



If you haven't seen The Two Towers yet, I suggest first buying/renting the Special Extended DVD Edition of The Fellowship. This version has an extra half hour or so. That "extra" time seems used to expand on character development and relationships. It seems like the theatrical release was shortened to focus more on action. I liked both versions of The Fellowship, but found the extended version much more enjoyable.



And The Two Towers is awesome! Now I want to read the books again.

The Two Towers...

Oh yeah!

I didn't bother recommending it since I figured it's likely got enough publicity without my help. Discussion though, that's another story!

I definitely saw a sweet love story between Sam and Frodo in the books, and it's there in the movies too. They're just so sweet and adorable.

Aragorn and Legolas though.... Well, they'd certainly make a hot couple! I think I just about melted through the chair when Legolas got on that horse. Whoa. Although I'd argue that we're given more of an obvious relationship between Gimli and Legolas. Really, these books and movies must be a delight for gay men everywhere.

I can't wait for the dvd of this one to come out, just so I can keep rewinding that bit with Legolas. wow!

cicca, you see the movie through my eyes. I agree the legolas/gimly thing is a bit forced, i saw more sparks between Aragorn and Legolas.



And as many know, Legolas is the reason to watch!

Hum well I must confess I did not really notice any subtext when I read the books. I did wonder if Bilbo, Frodo and Merry might be gay seeing as they never showed any interest in the lady hobbits and remained single for their entire 100+ years little lives. This was the logic that ruled my mind 15 years ago, what did I know, I'd never seen gays, at least not that I remember or was aware of at the time.



It could easily be so I guess, Tolkien hardly addressed anyone's sexuality in LoTR. In the book only one kiss gets mentioned and that is between Faramir and Eowyn. The romance between Aragorn and Arwen was only really elaborated upon in the appendices, but no kissing described in there either. Sam was always shown as being interested in/in love with Rosie, and he marries her eventually but after watching the first part of the movie (the extended version as well) through kitten prescribed glasses several times, I can see subtext between Sam and Frodo and I actually do remember going a few times when I was reading the book but never when it concerned Aragorn and Legolas. However, I haven't seen the Two Towers yet and I did not see the sparks flying between Willow and Tara during Hush either the first time around.
