An Unexpected Love

Postby runnerbird » Sat Mar 15, 2003 2:45 pm

Just wanted to give an alert to the US Kitten to a TV movie hitting our airwaves later this month... from the writer/director that brought us 'The Truth About Jane'.

An Unexpected Love:

Kate Mayer (Leslie Hope) seems to have it all: a nice suburban house, two loving children and a devoted husband. But Kate is anything but happy. She is disappointed not only with her marriage, but with her entire life. In her pursuit of happiness, this frustrated mother files for divorce and gets her first-ever job, working in a small real estate agency. To complicate matters, Kate finds herself strongly attracted to her kindhearted boss, Mac. The surprising twist? Mac (played by actress Wendy Crewson) happens to be a woman. Will Kate have the courage to risk following her heart? Watch one woman's emotional journey of self-discovery.

It will air: Monday, March 24 at 9 pm et/pt

Okay, probably dont wanna hear my reccomendations, but two movies that blew me away were Mullholland Drive and Royal Tenenbaums. Just got them on DVD and really, they are endlessly rewatchable.

Also saw Catch ME if you can, which was a lot of fun!

I just watched the second to last episode of Farscape, and wow, that was great. Farscape's multipart season finales are always impressive and this one was no exception. I really want to see the series continue, especially as I don't want to lose my favorite redhead on television: Sekozu.

Oh, and ME, Scorpius and how he gets along with Moya's crew is how incorporating a former villain into your cast should be done. There's always a reason to keep him, and he's a much more complex and interesting character than Spike.

What are the chances of you winning 38Million in the lottery? the odds are high, yet once this family win the jackpot, it seems that anything and everything seems to happen to them, no matter how high the odds! - nothing is impossible!

At Home with the Braithwaietes is fantastic! Virginia is so adorable - probably becuse she is totally blinded by love and lust. But her heart is in the right place - ususally!

is the only show at the mo i would set my VCR for, and call home just before it starts to make sure that someone is by the VCR making sure that it records okay! - (hello, Geek here!)

I managed to see 'At Home With The Braithwaites' for the first ever time last week, and I think Virginia is great. And, oddly, Tamsin reminded me a little of Willow.

Oh, and the reason I actually came to post in this thread: UK folks might be interested to know that the 17th London lesbian and gay film festival is on from 2nd-16th April. Check out their website:

boo - not the last series nooooooooooo!

Got a hell of a shock today at work - who else did i bump into in the lift, non other than...........

.... Amanda Redmond! Lol - i would have looked shockingly pink if it was Sarah Smart :blush

I too want Virginia and Tamsin to get back together, and you soo know Virginia wants it too, but bless her is flabbergasted at her Moms acceptance of the blessing and of what Megan would do.

Tamsin More reminds me of Tara. you know with the total love of Vriginia, even though Virginia is with Megan. But lets her be with who she thinks is right. Just like with the Oz/Willow thing.

That ep was so cool - "you got to be with the person you l-love", "I am" :willow :love :tara

I thought last week's scenes with Tamsin, Megan and baby Rowena were very cute. When Virginia is surprised to hear the baby's name and tells Tamsin: "That's my middle name..." and Tamsin says, "I know." Awww! She's named the baby after her!

And T telling V she didn't want her to leave. Come on Virginia, choose Tamsin. I was never a big fan of her and before last week would have hoped V would get a completely new girlfriend but now I think they belong together.

(A U-turn, but I have seen the light now! Megan, I think, is still after the money. Did you see the way she looked at David after he said he was going for £19m? Plus how can Virginia forget what Megan said to her: "You're a millionaire's daughter. I was desperate. Work it out!")

BTW AlexisWillow you work somewhere where Amanda Redman is?! Cool. Let's see. She was on that daytime interview show yesterday right?

Plus there was the big grin when Alyson said they could have 25K for the blessing 'cause that was what was spent on Sarah's wedding to Phil.

You can definately get the first series on VHS, probably on DVD too, but the other two aren't available.

Virginnia's history on the show would read, got pissed, failed exams, got pissed, got kicked out of uni, got pissed, foundout her mum was a millionaire, got pissed, got a new car, lusted after Megan, got pissed, got together with Tamsin, got pissed, help deliver her sister's baby, got pissed, started to imbezzel money from her mum, got pissed, split up with Tamsin, got pissed, got together with Megan, got pissed, imbezzelled more money, got pissed, got found out, got pissed , tried to kill herself, got back with Tasmin, found out Tamisn was pregnant, got pissed, messed around with Megan again, got pissed, split up with Tamsin, got together with Megan again, got pissed, argued with her mum, got pissed, bumped into Tamsin, looked aftr Tamsin's daughter, got it on with Tamsin, made up with mum & is getting her relationship with Megan blessed.

Have I missed anything out ?

Keep an eye on tv schedules today as it was mentioned that the news maybe on earlier.

AHWTB could get moved around the tv shedules and be on at a different time to what's printed in the listings.

NB Braithwaites fans - the internet TV listings seems to suggest, contrary to the newspaper schedules, that it's on at 9.30pm tonight, to allow for a news bulletin @ 9pm in light of the Iraq situation. The whole schedule is subject to change and might get changed back again...:

Hey I don't know whether the Australian TV Series The Secret Life of Us is seen in the states, UK, Europe etc but just in case it is and you guys haven't seen what I am talkin' about yet I will put in a spoiler warning.. The aussie kittens have probably all seen it already. Btw sorry in advance if someone has mentioned this before as I haven't read all the posts in the thread (I looked through most of the recent ones though).

Miranda has been very curious for weeks now about her out female boss. Miranda has been stuggling with her emerging feelings and she even denied that she had a crush on her boss in a discussion with her friend Kelly (sorry I have temporarily forgotten the name of Miranda's boss....any help from some aussie kittens). Last episode they finally kissed at Rex and Alex's wedding and from the previews of next weeks episode things seems to be really hotting up between them.

So far it has been really sweet the way Miranda is so unsure of her feelings and I have enjoyed the subtle interactions between the two. We will see how this develops and hope that the producers and execs don't end this one in a cliched fashion (I won't hold my breath though).

I'd love to hear from anyone else as to what they think about this relationship, where it is going, and whether it is shown outside of Australia. Thanks!

Just watched this film on DVD. It fits the cliche nauseatingly perfectly. It's based on a book and I'm guessing the book is better. The film itself was slow and confusing and predictable. Any one else seen this?

The Hours

Postby xita » Fri Mar 28, 2003 1:24 am

I finally saw that this week. I must say that I thought it was a great film. I was particularly impressed by Julianne Moore's performance.

spoilers included if you haven't seen it:

First thing I'd like to discuss is the cliche. None of these women were what I would say are lesbians yet all of them were queer. They were miserable. I mean this was a story about tremendously unhappy women. Yet I thought it was about life and living and making the choices that got you there. I cannot include Virginia Wolf's death as part of the cliche, she is not fictional. She is a real person. So then you have Julianne Moore's character that chose life, that chose to live instead of living in misery that would lead to eventual death. And Meryl streep's character at the end seems to make that choice too. So I actually saw and upbeat (for this movie) ending.

Now my views on the rest. This is the darkest movie I've seen since "Dancer in the Dark." However, I think was even more depressing and certainly oppressive. The weight of their pain was almost unbearable. I think perhaps because I could relate to them, this was a story about women I would know and like. I liked the way their lives were entertwined. They were mirrors of each other , I think having not read Mrs. Dalloway made me feel like I didn't know that 4th woman in the movie. Anyway, the relationship with kids in the movie was interesting. There seemed to be something these women lacked and that was a stereotypical attachment to kids. Viriginia Wolf without kids but strangely connected to the quiet girl who witnesses the desperate kiss between Virginia and her sister. Julianne Moore had this tense relationship with her son. She obviously wanted to protect them but seemed to lack that attachment that he so longed for and he too is witness to a desperate kiss between 2 lonely women. And then Meryl Streep's character who places a man above the love her daughter, though she quickly catches herself, the message was clear.

I think it just ads to the feeling that these women were very much detached from society and their expectations and it made their lives pretty unbearable. It made me wonder about the book and Viriginia Wolf (i've only ever read a room of one's own). A film that inspires to read can't be bad at all.

Talk To Her

Postby Penrose Orleans » Fri Mar 28, 2003 2:53 am

I just saw the latest Almodovar flick, "Talk to Her", and I can summarize it in 2 adjectives: disturbing and brilliant.

Of course, this being Almodovar, I was ready to be thoroughly amazed by the amount of sex and violence, not to mention the transvestites and the prostitutes (both of which are recurring in his films). That wasn't what I found.

The characters in "Talk to Her" were both more "normal" (not as marginalized in society) and more disturbing (there's that word again!) in their actions than other Almodovar characters (for reference, try "All About My Mother"). The way in which the movie sneaks up behind you, then disturbs the hell out of you, is a change from the usual "shock and awe" ;) style of Almodovar.

In conclusion, everyone should see it, esp. fans of Almodovar (which I think everyone should be! ;) )-- it's not worse, just different. --Nora
