About Boys Don't Cry: yeah, unfortunately, the reality is even more depressing than the movie: another person, a black guy, was murdered at the house along w/ Brendan and the girl. And as for Brendan's gf, seen leaving town at the end? She later returned to the hell-hole. Then there's the fact that Brendan's mom (well, she still calls herself "Teena's" mom :sigh ) only got an insulting pittance in her wrongful-death suit against those mo-fo's in the sherriff's dept. who let Brendan's rapists out of jail so they could finish the job.:rage (Though it has been appealed---can't recall the exact legal status at this point).

Re: Chasing Amy: I only saw it once, and felt wildly ambivalent about it. There were things I liked about it. I actually imagined showing it to my ex-husband, re: Ben A.'s character's insecurity about Amy (cuz I think that ultimately my ex- couldn't get over that either). But why she's called "gay" and not "bi" is just ob-freakin-scene. There was an article in Esquire magazine a few months ago that had the same damn theme: "I'm a guy who's dating a lesbian." Do these *ssholes have some sort of mental block which prevents them from contemplating the concept of bisexuality? Or is it just the persistent fantasy "Oh, she was a lesbian, until me and 'Mr. Winky' turned her!" :puke

But I digress. :miff

I kinda liked SW: Attack of the Clones at least compared to the dreck that was Phantom Menace. But can anyone tell me what El Lucas was thinking when he gave these flicks these assinine titles?

GG I saw the first "Harry Potter" movie on DirecTV a few months ago, and it just gave me one giant headache from beginning to end. :stink Out

Edited, cuz I apparently had trouble distinguishing Esquire magazine from the (National) Enquirer: go figure! ;)

Like Beatnikjackie and Gatito already said, it is a true story, so that's why. That's what is disgusting, that things like that have happened and still happen in this world. I haven't seen this movie and I never will, what I know about it is is more than I can stand. I could not watch a movie like that even if it wasn't based on a true story. When watching fiction I don't mind angst, but only with moderation, and in the end it is not what I enjoy watching.

Part 1 & 2 of the Star Wars movies have been a major disappointment compared to the other three, especially part 1 bored me senseless. To me, the only redeeming factors have been Yoda and queen Amidala.

The Rules or Attraction: This movie was gross the only fun part was when the guys were dancing to "Faith" it was pretty cool but didn't make up for the pile o crap that was the movie.

Fear.comStupid story line disturbing visuals. After the tub scene I couldn't even think about boobs for a week.(most depressing week of my life)Dead boobs:sob

ChuckieAHHHH!! I watches it when I was five at my friends house. They said it wasn't scary sure not scary a doll running 'round with a knife isn't scary at all. I had nightmare for six months and to this day still get that rush of fear in the pit of my stomach if I see Chuckie anywhere.

Idle HandsThe opening scenes scared the crap out of me. I went to see it with my sister her friend and my grandmother. Again I was lied to by my sister this time I spent half of the movie covering my eyes.

I don't like scary movies most of the time which makes me ponder why I started watching Buffy in the first place...oh yeah hot lesbian witches. Maybe I just need someone to cuddle...any takers?

No? Damn! My life sucks almost as bad as some movies do.

Had no idea Boys Dont Cry was based on a true story. That makes it even more disturbing :( that people did and still do those kind of things. The only reason I didn't turn the channel was I hoped that it would have a happy ending....I didn't see the "based on a true story" thing. Thanks for clearing that up.

Hate this Film

Postby famer » Wed Apr 16, 2003 11:32 pm

Tough Love -- the Affleck, JLo film. The Scoop gossip writer wrote this:

The upcoming film "Tough Love" proves that horny straight guys have a chance with hot-looking lesbians! B. Fleck's character makes J. Lo's gay character straight with pillow talk about a turkey baster and the

never-fail pickup line: "Gobble, Gobble."

AICN review:

...

So Affleck wants to bang Lopez, but she's a lesbian. This goes on and on and on, and I swear to God they put footage from Chasing Amy in here, b/c all it is is Affleck and Lopez arguing about gay vs, straight, straight sex vs. gay sex, women vs. men, masculine vs. feminine, on and on and on. It is so boring....

You see, JLo's ex lover shows up, and slices her wrists. Because its a comedy, and that's what people do in comedies. Suicide. I know, fucking hilarious. After that, she takes her lover to the hospital, and then goes home and starts fucking Ben Affleck. Because we all know that lesbians aren't REALLY lesbians. Not with Ben Affleck in the room. Not J. Lo. No. So, the mob closes in, good guys become bad guys, and Affleck and Lopez have to make lifelong decisions. I say this because I don't want to totally ruin the film for those of you who are going to see it. ... I can say that this is the worst film that I have seen in about three years ... Avoid this like the plague.

Hate it already.

Star Trek Nemesis. Now, it's not actually that bad. But that is supposed to be the last I get to see of my beloved TNG? You have to be kidding me.

Flipping though the satellite channels this morning helped me remember another god-awful flick:

Autumn in New York.

My gf and I saw the last half of that movie on TV some random Sunday last fall. It was so insipid and predictable that we were calling out lines of dialogue in anticipation of every cliched word spoken. Add to that the totally laughable notion of Richard Gere and Winona Ryder as romantic leads and, well, you have a really, REALLY bad movie.

Well, looks like most of the ones I hate are already represented here. I've walked out of two movies in my life, Eyes Wide Shut and A.i. I also think Clockwork Orange should be shut away forever, however, my all time least favorite movie has to be Romeo and Juliet. We were FORCED to watch it in middle school and I swear the sight of Romeo's ass is what turned me. :wink

Re: Bad Movies

Postby Munchkin » Sun Apr 20, 2003 12:01 am

The movies I have a Big Problem with are those that masquerade as "meaningful art" but are really just pretentious bull$#!+.

Blue Velvet is one, which I've only seen parts of but could never see all the way through because it's so damned boring, not to mention its condescending air of diletanteism that pervaded David Lynch's later handling of Twin Peaks (the series as a whole, not the prequel movie that I will NEVER see in a million years).

Leaving Las Vegas was another, which I once tried to convince myself was "touching" and "heartfelt" when I saw it in the theatres. Now I dismiss it as a pointless waste-of-time that attempted to romanticize alcoholic self-destruction. And it may just be me, but I just don't find Elisabeth Shue attractive in the slightest.

Which brings me onto The Saint, which pissed me off mostly for Val Kilmer's latter-day Method Acting nightmare posturing as the sensitive loner. When I find myself longing for Roger Moore's lightweight rendering from the TV series, you know that you've witnessed a truly BAD performance.

And as evidence that there should NOT be a Mad Max 4 on Mel Gibson's plate, we have Lethal Weapon 4. 'Nuff said, except that Jet Li was such a charismatic figure as the villian that you were rooting for him and not the so-called "heroes" (I won't even mention that movie's last line; it's just too painful).

And finally, Die Another Day, which conclusively ended the James Bond series for me with its sheer awfulness as a 'greatest hits' package without a modicum of wit or feeling. And no slur to John Cleese (my favorite 'Monty Python' BTW), but Desmond Llwellyn is the one and only 'Q'. May ye Rest in Peace, you awesome old dude.

Edited to Add:

TromDeGrey, was that Romeo and Juliet the lame-o 1960's version where Romeo cried like a little baby in tights after he'd been banished? If so, then I definitely saw that in school too and hated every second of it. Shakespeare deserves better than this.

Willowlicious, I heard that Autumn in New York was really bad too, but didn't it at least have J.K. Simmons (the shamelessly Evil Schillinger from Oz) as the doctor to tried to save the dying Wynona near the end? And if he did indeed fail, then YAY!! But seriously, Simmons did make the otherwise workmanlike Spider-Man watchable with that movie's best three minutes as J. Jonah Jamieson, so Autumn couldn't have been all that bad with Simmons in it, could it?

Richard Gere, ew, he's the reason I refuse to watched "First Knight", I don't know whether that is a good or bad movie but there should be a law against Richard Gere being cast as Sir Lancelot. This reminds me of another bad movie I have seen: "Runaway Bride", not as disgusting as "There is Something about Mary" but definitely as unfunny, Terms of Endearment was funnier than both those so called comedies combined. The hours of my life wasted on bad movies and crappy tv are beginning to add up.

DrG, since you asked about the "Lethal Weapon 4" line, I guess it's my duty to dredge up that painful memory so that others may be spared of harboring that burden in the future. Remember, you were warned.

"We're not friends; we're family!"

Basically, its what everyone (who isn't Jet Li, lucky him) says as they're gathered in the hospital to have their group picture taken as all the women proudly display their newborn babies.

The only worse movie I could've seen that year was definitely "The Avengers", and I only went because I thought Uma Thurman would look as hot as she appeared in publicity pics in the catsuit. Instead, she was conspicuously unattractive in every sense of the word. In fact, I even went inside a video store years later to find a written synopsis by the management under "The Avengers" video warning customers NOT to watch it. Imagine that.

I don't think I could ever watch any Richard Gere movie all the way through, as just by watching the laughable previews of "The Cotton Club" (found on the older video rental tape of This Is Spinal Tap IIRC, still the funniest movie you can ever watch) where this pansy-ass white dude repeatedly proclaims that he "just wants to play Jazz", I just didn't find him believable in that or any role.

Given how familar I've become with Christopher Meloni from his work in both Law & Order: SVU and OZ, I'm more inclined believe that Julia Roberts's character in "Runaway Bride" is a complete and utter fool for dumping Meloni (her latest fiance') for Richard Gere. Hence, my decision to never touch that movie with a ten-foot barge pole.

Sheesh, this seems to be shaping up into a "movies we'll NEVER watch" thread instead of a "Bad Movies we Hated" thread. So I think I'd better try to remember a few more turkeys I've actually seen before I get back to you. I know I've seen more than my share of 'em.

I have to weigh in and add a vote for "Gangs of New York". So so so bad. Cameron Diaz was the shining light, as miscast as she was. I felt like I was sitting in that cinema for seven hours. I almost had to break my firm policy of never walking out on a film. I never have, and I never will... but geez I came close.

Also - I was a film studies major and I have heard millions of reasons why I'm supposed to love Kubrick and every film he has ever made - but he's responsible for some of the worst movies EVER! A Clockwork Orange - forget about banning it for bad taste, what about for just being horribly written? And Eyes Wide Shut? *yawn* And Dr Strangelove? How that makes it on to anyone's list of favourites just escapes me. I've been lectured until I thought my ears would fall off about how great this guy is (and I'll give "Full Metal Jacket" some points) but... *throws hands in the air in bewilderment*

I'm also intrigued by the discussion on "Chasing Amy". I mean, I'm a fan of the film for many reasons, but I once saw a friend of mine and her girlfriend nearly break up after a vicious fight regarding this film. Scary how passionate some people feel about it.

there are many movies that i love. like "merlin", "the professional", "giant", "the matrix" and "chasing amy" (okay, i know most of you guys don't like this Kevin Smith flick, it's just that when I watch his movies, i don't really think much about it. The guy screws with everyone)

and about the ones i hate... here's my list:

1. unbreakable -- boooring.

2. mission impossible 2 -- i just hated it

3. sixth sense -- talk about paranoia

4. the exorcist -- uh, nightmares for weeks much?

5. forrest gump -- i just didn't like it. i label it as a sci-fi movie.

6. star wars: attack of the clones -- i know natalie portman is hot, it's just the story of it...ugh...and the title... c'mon!

7. autumn in new york -- my friends say it's great, but seeing winona ryder kissing richard gere is just yucky.

8. movies with michael douglas as the lead....

9. serendipity -- total waste of 2 hours, in my opinion. i get tired just seeing the lead characters chasing each other around like blindfolded bunnies.

well, i could only remember these two. but i know there's more i hate. anyway, i'll edit this post one time, i guess..

Bad movies. How can I resist? There's such a long list of bad movies I've seen. It's be ridiculous to try to list them all. So, I'll just go with the ones I can remember that were so bad they cause me physical pain when I remember them.

Chasing Amy. Many have mentioned hating this movie. I wanted to demand my $1.50 back after my friend made me see it at the cheap-o theater. I want those hours of my life back. Surely I could spend them doing something more constructive, like watching paint dry.

John Carpenter's Vampires. The only movie I have actually walked out on. Believe me, I have sat through such crap, that most would run away screaming before I even become bored. This movie was just... I don't know. Some of my friends actually liked it. I couldn't get past the utter bad acting, plot, and gore to see anything good about the movie. And this is coming from a fan of horror and vampires.

Queen of the Damned. I want those hours of my life back. UTTER CRAP.

I believe that someone has already mentioned Gummo. I have an ex to blame for showing me this torturous movie. It's a documentary-like film about white trash. I'm not exaggerating when I say white trash. Chloe Sevigny plays an albino lesbian twin. It's just...hours of pain.

Speed 2. More hours of my life, gone.

Prophecy 3. The first movie was fantastic. The second movie not so much, but still somewhat redeemable. But this one...this one was just bad. Real bad. Badder than I thought this series could actually get. Bad like Phantasm 4.

The Arena. It looked so good. Female gladiators in what looked to be a small step above a B movie. It wasn't. Stay away from this stinking pile of crap.

Being John Malkovich. What was so great about this movie? I actually screamed at the end, out of frustration, pain, and utter relief that this horrible experience was finally over. I hate it almost as much as the next on my list...

And finally, the movie I moaned and groaned over for weeks, American Beauty. WHY? Why did anyone pay to have this movie made? It's so ridiculous. Hours of drudgery and angst over an average middle class family. The father has a mid-life crisis. The mother has an affair with her boss. The daughter gets involved with a psychopath. Woo-fricking-hoo. Was there a point to this movie? Because I must have missed it. I actually did try to get my money back for renting this one, but the guy at the counter told me that there was no satisfaction guarantee. Damn you, Blockbuster.

Re: Bad Movies.

Postby elessar007 » Mon Apr 21, 2003 2:11 am

Some of the movies I would put on my hate-list:

***Along with the title I have listed some reasons why I hate the movie. These reasons may give away parts of the storyline to those who haven't seen the film. Consider this a spoiler warning.***

The Perfect Storm: Since I knew that this was a real fishing vessel and the storm was a real event I assumed the story would be based on real events. When no one from the boat survives the storm the story goes from loose interpretation of facts to some screenplay writer's half-ass conjecture. I fully embrace the concept of suspension of disbelief and the allowance for artistic license. The problem is that the movie didn't present itself as what could have happened. I, and the other people I went with, were under the impression that The Perfect Storm was the cinematic representation of what really happened. At the film's end I felt as if I had been duped. Combine that with 2+ hours of boredom and you get a hate-worthy film.

Vanilla Sky: The whole pre-packaged psycho trip happy meal concept was lame. I could have sworn that Bobby Ewing was going to turn around in the shower and tell the audience it was all a dream and then laugh as we collectively realize how bad this film is. The best part of the movie was the view of Central Park from the apartment window.

One Hour Photo: Creepy story conveyed by 120(or so) minutes of boring scenes that fail miserably in their attempt to develop the character and plot.

A Knight's Tale: I know the film was intentionally anacronystic but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

That's just a few off the top of my head.

slowontheuptake: I wholeheartedly agree that the director's cut of Blade Runner is far superior to the theatrical release. Deckard's unicorn dream generating the inference that he is a replicant himself makes a much better story in my opinion. It's like sending a thief to catch a thief.

For every film that someone hates there is someone who loves the film.

Willow:In my world there are people in chains, and we can ride them like ponies.

Tara:You should ride with me some time. I guarantee safety and fun.
