Wow, no comment on the series finale of Charmed? Well I have some thoughts and impressions.
First off, I started off not liking Charmed much, but around the time Cole showed up and then Paige was introduced I thought the show improved quite remarkably in terms of writing and the cast dynamics. It fell off later, and this season has bitten pretty hard, I didn't like Billi, thought some of the explanations for how they tranistioned to living at the house again were lame, and there was too much Billi storylines. It didn't help that Kelly Couco couldn't act. All that being said, I actually really liked the finale.
Compared to the Buffy finale, Charmed's was a much more satisfying conclusion to the show, had more punch to it, and really did sum up a lot of what the show was about Kicking demons and family. It's that last part that really puts the Charmed finale so far above the BtVS one. At the end, there were no meaningless deaths, no stupid, ill thought out deus ex machina spells that make all potentials actual slayers (which I still think is monumentally stupid), and no amulet also out of nowhere. Coop's ring had been around and used before, the bad guys knew about it and tried to use it too, and even Billi's past projection powers had come up before (even I saw them used earlier this season before I stopped watching the show). I loved the way that Gramms and their mom was involved, that Wyatt and Chris from the future were included, that Leo was there for most of the episode and that in the end, things more or less worked out. You got a sense of continuity, of real family ties. Even Pru was mentioned, her death addressed with some respect and impact on the characters. The flashes to the future with the characters sligthly older, and then very old Leo and Piper were a nice touch. They showed that life went on, despite the supernatural events and nature of the family. We had a very happy ending, without getting too sappy for my taste, and I was impressed. Brad Kern deserves a great deal of credit for a well written finale. When all is said and done, I definitely think this was a better way to end the series than last season's finale. This summed up the show better, was more satisfying, and is a startling contrast to BtVS which was much more lackluster. Sad, but even with a shaky last season, Charmed still goes out on a higher note and with more dignity.
