At this point perhaps we should consider contacting the CDC before the whole of series television in the US succumbs to this dreadful contagion. In the UK the 'Bazalgette Reality virus' has all but wiped out drama and comedy on television and the few surviving examples are weak and pathetic. All the ME alumni must be isolated before it's too late...:spin

I didn't even watch last night. After the last episode, I decided to take this week off. I didn't miss it.

I'm afraid it's looking more like my interest in the GG's was like the dot-com bubble, and the addition of Jane to the staff has burst it.

Yes, the spoilers aren't really stirring up the excitement. Danny Strong - gee, one guess about who was influential in that casting decision. Jess back during sweeps - the irony of that is they made his character so unlikeable, that putting him on is likely to make me tune out rather than tune in. And Paris with Michael York - she looks like his granddaughter. :rolleyes

What what? I don't read spoilers, Paris with Michael York? When you say it like that it sounds as if they are romantically involved. :shock

Paris is going to have an affair with a professor, who will be played by Michael York. Or so the spoilers go.

The actor who plays Jess just ended his run on Boston Public (his character got killed off), so I guess that means he's free to return to Star's Hollow.

Yeah, I like Michael York just fine, but imagining him with Paris - yuck! And she looks young for her age anyway.

Well, I thought tonight's ep was better than last week. The Kirk date was funny, and so was Lorelai and Sookie trying to work for Emily. But the "study tree" story was dumb. The girl just got to Yale, and I'm getting the feeling they're already running out of ideas for college storylines. Kinda sad.

Oh well, on to next week... :)

Postby seurat » Wed Oct 29, 2003 6:43 pm

Since I accidentally missed last week's GG due to a videotaping error, this was the first ep I've seen since the woefully bad JE disaster. This one was written by Amy though, and it was pretty good. It wasn't as packed with dialogue as her usual scripts, but had some good lines - I really laughed at the Tom Cruise putdown and the image from Lorelai of her mother cackling away while looking in her magic mirror. Kirk's date was very good, and the scene where Emily tells Lorelai that the party was cancelled was great. This ep didn't have any of the cutesy swarminess of some recent ep's, I'll give it a B-.

I have to agree about the study tree bit, just didn't work at all. Paris on the phone was ok, but the rest of the Yale material was weak. And I'm starting to dislike Digger too, even though I still like the actor. As for the spoilers regarding Danny Strong, and Michael York with Paris - well, the less said the better. Maybe if we just ignore this, it will go away?

I'm really glad my husband wasn't with me while I was watching this ep. (He was out seeing 'Mystic River'.) See, my husband is called Kirk, and the other week he was complaining about TV characters called Kirk being geeky. So he wouldn't have enjoyed the date stuff too much...

I'll go with the consensus in this thread and say that I found the study tree thing annoying. In fact, it annoyed me to the point where I was cheering on Lorelai when she chewed Rory out about it.

Anyone willing to bet that Janet or Rory's other room-mate (whose name escapes me right now) will murder Paris with an axe by the end of the season?

My favourite bit of the episode was Emily's remark about Lorelai having the word 'Juicy' on her butt. Hilarious.

Emily was great in this ep. I love her. The "juicy" remark was perfect. Into what? A brassiere with "tasty" printed across it?

I do love the rare times when Emily and Lorelai take the time to actually talk to each other and get past the snarkiness on both sides.

Digger needs to go away, yo.

Lorelai yelling at Rory to suck it up was great. I hope she keeps it up.

Poor poor Paris. I am afraid of what the writers might have in store for her. If anyone would snap and want to kill Paris it'd have to be Janet. That or they'll get into another heated argument and just start making out in the middle of it.

Well, after two weeks off, I gave GG's another try tonight. I turned it off after the fifth or sixth self-described "inappropriate lesbian joke." How ironic that I've now seen Lorelai Gilmore practicing the very form of humor that the latest Joan of Arcadia episode denounced as pathetic and childish. :spin

The living art thing looked pretty damn cool though, and Sebastian Bach amused me for some reason.

I actually kinda liked this ep of GG. Since it was written by Daniel Palladino, who has been writing them for quite a while, I doubt that we can blame JE for those jokes. They were not funny I agree, but I didn't get a sense that they were particularly mean-spirited. If I get a chance to watch it again, I'll pay more attention to those lines in case I missed something. I'm a huge art fan, so I loved the living painting idea and thought it looked spectacular. I also really liked the band stuff , Laine cracked me up a couple of times.

There's no question that GG has gone downhill overall and I don't look forward to it as much as in the past. But then I know someone who stopped watching it after the second season, feeling that the writing had already slipped too far. I suppose it's a matter of diminished expectations for me, as long as it doesn't really annoy me I'll keep watching each week in hopes of catching a really top-notch ep one of these weeks. Maybe I've secretly been an optimist all these years. Who knew?

i missed the first 10 mins, so i only caught the last one, the remark rory made about stopping them, so i missed that spiel entirely and dont really have an opinion on it. with irked me more than the STUPID not funny enough overzealouschrist kirk thing.

and i WANT to know what i thought about those jokes.

oh well.

reallllllly cool living picture thing.

even tho i knew the luke rachel thing was coming, it was still silly. i mean, not an imporbably situation, but so oddly just slid into this episode (which had very little point to it).

theyve overdone it on the quirk. such a fine line.

alas, kinda like friends if ya think about....how monica went from quirky and neurotic, to shrill...that same sort of progression with all the characters.

oh well.

i know i wont be able to stop watching entirely. but i meander away from the tv while its on now. or stop paying attention.

According to the GilmoreGirls.org site, GG is not being produced on VHS or DVD. However, they say if you'd like to vote for its release and also be notified when it does become available, Amazon.com is keeping track through e-mail sign ups. You can find the info on the GG site:

Re: new show

Postby Scout » Tue Nov 18, 2003 8:18 pm

Well, I was enjoying the show very much until the last 10 seconds when they suddenly flashed to Paris and Michael York (her professor) making out after the game. Apparently they didn't want to waste any time showing the two of them getting to know each other - just go to the makeout scene. Yuck!

Aside from that, I thought the show was pretty funny. Seeing Lorelai getting into the Yale/Harvard game via the food and liquor was hilarious. And the trip to the store on her date with Jason was cute too. Jason seemed more likeable this show.

But what is it with Luke and his waiters - it's like Murphy Brown with her secretaries. I just hope Lane gets the job now that Foreigner-boy is gone. She'd probably be on more.

No previews for next week. Guess that's because of the holiday.

It's all gone horribly wrong

Postby tyche » Wed Nov 19, 2003 6:43 pm

I did enjoy last night's episode - the writing seemed sharper than it has been this season. Maybe Michael York was kissing Paris to shut her up...

Anyway, this week the SF Chronicle's TV critic Tim Goodman is doing a lot of lists, and he named Gilmore Girls as one of the five shows that has fallen the furthest from greatness. (The curse of Mutant Enemy strikes again.)

Quote:
www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/ar...32RNV1.DTL

FIVE DRAMAS THAT HAVE FALLEN THE FURTHEST FROM GREATNESS:

Now, five is being nice. It really is. The sell-by-date abuse of most TV series is egregious, not to mention stink-filled. But to be on this list, a series had to be really wonderful, an offering that once kept people buzzing in chat rooms and recalling key scenes the next day around the water cooler. And now? Generally unhappy viewers. Really unhappy critics.

1. "The Practice." ABC. Oh, God. Oh, God oh God oh God. Somebody please shoot this thing dead. James Spader can't save it. It doesn't even help that all the really skinny people are gone. It's just unseemly, this bid to stay alive. Lazarus this is not.

2. "The West Wing." NBC. Um, could somebody return our favorite characters to their upright positions and give them back their personalities, as written all those years ago? Tune in next week when Leo sets himself on fire for no reason other than a possible "Third Watch" crossover episode. What's happened here is just plain sad.

3. "ER." NBC. Hmmm. Another John Wells show. But that's not the point. The point is that even "stat" jokes aren't funny anymore when making those tired resuscitation references. Too much cast turnover. Way too much forced drama. And who really wants to be in the hospital this long anyway?

4. "Gilmore Girls." WB. Lauren Graham is still worth the price of admission. The peppy dialogue is still sometimes amusing and even stunning. But growing up and moving on has hurt this series creatively. Maybe there was no good answer for how to fix the splitsville in Stars Hallow, but "Gilmore Girls" has fallen down the rabbit hole, and it may be the saddest story on TV right now.

5. "Law & Order." NBC. Not caring anymore might be the biggest letdown of all. Perhaps there should be no more watering down of this franchise? But maybe there's just a ripped-from-the-headlines malaise going on now that we won't fully understand until it hits us as we watch the 24-hour "Law & Order" channel.

Re: It's all gone horribly wrong

Postby Scout » Wed Nov 19, 2003 7:28 pm

Re: Paris and the professor - isn't there almost always a policy about professors not getting romantically involved with students? You wouldn't think a professor would be kissing a student in public like that without worrying about repercussions.

Re: the list - I've wanted to give GG the benefit of the doubt, but I have to agree with the inclusion of the show on his list. Something is really missing this season, and I can only assume it has to do with Rory being at Yale. Hopefully in time they'll be able to make the adjustment with the girls being separated and then they'll get the stories back on track. I'd hate to think the problems are deeper than that. :(

Re: It's all gone horribly wrong

Postby seurat » Wed Nov 19, 2003 8:28 pm

Well, ok, it's gone wrong, but horribly wrong seems an overstatement. And I do think GG will pull out of the doldrums. As for the past two ep's, I missed all but the last 15 minutes of the previous one, and my reception (on cable, of course, and digital cable at that) was so bad last night that I couldn't watch all of it. I didn't hate it though, and I'd like to see it again someday with a watchable picture to catch all of Amy's clever dialogue. As for the list, I'd agree with all of them and GG is the only one I continue to watch regularly. And I seem to remember reading that GG is off for the next couple of weeks, but I may be wrong.

Re: 11/18 Episode

Postby LadyBrymstone » Thu Nov 20, 2003 8:24 pm

I've also felt that GG has slipped a lot this year. It seems that the whole season, save this past episode (11/18) has revolved around NOTHING. Each episode seemed pointless, but because I like this show so much due to the humor and acting, I kept watching.

I was pleasantly surprised with this week's episode. The writing seemed snappier and each subplot seemed to have a direction, now leading the characters to something more substantial. Ok, I might have my rose-colored glasses on, but I'm not quite ready to give up on my favorite show.

Hopefully they will find the proper balance between Rory's storylines and Lorelai's...without having to creates scenes for them together all the time. It seems forced and pointless...not to mention a bit co-dependent. LOL.

Minor spoilers

Postby tyche » Wed Nov 26, 2003 2:41 pm

This is fairly minor, so I didn't put in the special code - mods, feel free to edit if necessary.

Kristen/Wanda’s chat:

freddiemac asks: How much longer will Danny Strong be on Gilmore G?

Kristin replies: Officially, he’s only been signed for one more episode, but when I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago, he seemed hopeful that it would last, on and off, throughout the season. Now what about that Doyle show!!?? I know, he can move to Venice Beach to reconnect with his long-lost father who owns a hotdog stand. Now THAT’S an idea!!!

Incidentally, Milo Ventimiglia (I probably just mangled the spelling of his surname) is going to be on Law & Order: SVU next week, for anyone interested.
