AN UNEXPECTED LOVE

Director: Lee Rose, writer and director of "The Truth About Jane"

Year film was made: 2003

Genre: Drama

Stars: Leslie Hope and Wendy Crewson

Premiering: Monday, March 24 at 9 pm et/pt

Special encore dates:

Monday, March 24 at 11 pm et/pt

Thursday, April 3 at 3 pm et/pt

Saturday, April 19 at 1 pm et/pt

Kate Mayer (Leslie Hope) seems to have it all: a nice suburban house, two loving children and a devoted husband. But Kate is anything but happy. She is disappointed not only with her marriage, but with her entire life. In her pursuit of happiness, this frustrated mother files for divorce and gets her first-ever job, working in a small real estate agency. To complicate matters, Kate finds herself strongly attracted to her kindhearted boss, Mac. The surprising twist? Mac (played by actress Wendy Crewson) happens to be a woman. Will Kate have the courage to risk following her heart? Watch one woman's emotional journey of self-discovery.

This movie reminds me of "My Two Loves" from the eighties, except she had to make a choice between a man and a woman not just her heterosexuality and a woman. Although of course this one will have a more progressive ending than that old movie.

Yeah! As I was reading that, I thought, this sounds like that one movie with Mariette Hartley and Lynn Redgrave that I was soooo interested in when I was 13. I remember watching it (I think I was crushing on Lynn Redgrave at the time, too, actually :lol ) and trying to find ways to talk about it at school without it being obvious that I was obsessed.

This movie was shown on Cable (Foxtel) in Australia

last month. It is definately worth watching. My g/f and I stumbled

across it one lazy Sunday afternoonand really enjoyed it.

And may I just say....the actress who plays Mac - really knows how to wear

a pant suit!!

Oh thanks runnerbird and xita :) ! I enjoyed the "Truth about Jane", so I look forward to seeing this tv movie. And I must confess I too had a slight obsession with the movie "My two loves" (which I probably have on tape somewhere). I remember watching the show quite a few times (minus the ending) as I swooned over Lynn Redgrave and her accent.

And I just love this emoticon :kitty !

I can't find it in my Canadian listings.

I will note that Lee Rose is mentioned in the Vancouver newspaper today. A little mention about her being an out lesbian and loving Vancouver muchly. Apparently she spends over half her time in Vancouver, filming, and loves it so much that she's applying for dual Canadian citizenship.

This was actually one of the first lesbian themed movies I got my dad to watch with me. I was and am still proud of that, cause I'll never forget some of the comments he was making through out the movie, because of Jane's mother's ignorance.

I'm so proud of my dad. :heart

Sorry, I got a little mushy there... :)

yeah a whole week to go.

I was going to say that this movie would be better than "my two loves" because a lesbian had written it. Then I remembered that was written by Rita Mae Brown so that's not it lol.

Let's see if I can find a way to watch the movie in the TV lounge in the dorms without getting too many strange looks or annoyed looks from people. This would be a good time to have cable in my room. :sigh

I think it was about two years ago now that I saw The Truth About Jane on Lifetime. I really enjoyed watching it. I was sick at the time and so I had set the recorder on my TV to tape it, but I was able to watch it at the same time and my mom watched it with me. She even tried out the whole, "My name is and my daughter is a lesbian" thing. :)

Anyway, saw the commercial for this one and it looks good.

Always,

Kristin

Right now I'm taping the show to watch later... I have been looking forward to seeing this movie. Although, I'm curious how far they plan on going in showing the physical side of their relationship (ie kissing, love scene). In this regards I read in the New York Daily News that Lifetime ordered the love scene cut (it's much shorter than originally planned). With this in mind, I hope the network doesn't end up "butchering" the film (with edits)... I guess time will tell.

i dunno, having watched tipping the velvet everything seems tame after that (those scenes were :thud and :drool worthy). but yes the love scene in this movie was kinda lame, a lot of kissing and not much physicality (reality) to it (thanks to the lovely censoring edits). maybe if leslie acted better i'd believe it. Wendy is not only hot hot hot in those pant suits but she's a good actress too. loved her in *better than chocolate*

i'm in the middle of the last half and some parts are good. that lady that works with them is hysterical but the rest of the story is ok. lot's of cliches speeches but maybe i'm just in a bad mood. sigh...

It was well intentioned yet pretty heavy handed complete with the tag "public service" type announcement at the end. I've sure as hell watched worse. Plus Brent Spiner.

I think that Brent Spinner was the most amusing part. I totally didn't expect him to show up in a Lifetime movie. And boy was it a Lifetime movie. I had to resist the urge to gag at moments.

Overall, it was bleh. I can appreciate what they were trying to do, and it's always nice to see any GLBT relationships get exposure. It is a situation that should get attention. I just wasn't impressed with it as a movie.

I thought the movie was ok. Got pretty good and dramatic at the end, although the beginning was a little slow and dull. I haven't watched many lesbian movies (I'm starting a collection now). There was a lot of talking and less doing in the movie but I guess everyone wanted to get their point across.

It was a little "cliche'y" and Leslie's acting was mediocre (sp?) compared to Wendy's. Man if Wendy played Kate...that would've been great.

The love scene was cool, for you know, network TV. They've never shown a love scene between 2 women before so I got more that I expected - so I actually thought it was great. I heard that it was edited and cut so there was much more revealing stuff in there. Maybe there will be a director's cut/unedited version when it comes to DVD. Wendy seemed a little upset about it being cut, but was glad that there was a happy ending (Lifetime originally suggested an unhappy ending to Lee Rose (writer)). Now that would've pissed me off, we got enough unhappy endings in lesbian relationships on television.

N!k

[edited to add]

P.S. I just came from the Lifetime message board and there are A LOT of women who say this movie reflected their lives. I find that very interesting that such a vast number of women are in love with women but stay married to their husbands (for kid's sake or whatever). I only had one "kinda relationship" thingy with a guy for almost 3 months when I was 20. That's about it. I've been living with my girlfriend for 3 years and now I'm 26. We are both each other's "firsts" so we are coping and learning everything thing together.

P.S.S. You know...I watched 1hr of this movie before I realized Wendy was the "sex toy" mom in Better Than Chocolate. I kept saying "where have I seen her before?" Then I laughed when I figured it out.LOL...She's a sexy talented actress.

Oh and .... Leslie Hope is a hottie too.

It was exactly what I expected, a tv movie made by lifetime. First 30 minutes of which are usually background etc. It's another one in a line of movies apparently made to educate and for that, a big hand to lifetime. Nothing new here or extraordinary. I think what I liked most was some of the dialogue. I was very amused by the teasing mac was getting from her co-worker, or all the typical lesbian things women are supposed to say in these thing. I'll add more later. For what it was , it was ok. Seems like the theme for this and the truth about jane is family acceptance.

I DID enjoy this. I'll admit it, but I still think, "The Truth About Jane," was much better. I guess, cause I could identify more with it, Jane being a teenager and all.

I have to say that, Wendy Crewson is one of the only reasons to recommend watching this. :drool I just love her. Loved her in, "Better Than Chocolate," and I loved her in, "The Beast," which didn't last very long. Her and Elizabeth Mitchell in the same tv show... :thud I'll have to go and watch my taped episodes of that show.

They did tell a pretty good story with this movie, but the edited parts probably would have made it more worth while. :evil I'm actually surprised they showed as much as they did, it being on Lifetime and all.

I'll definitely watch this again, there's no question. I just probably won't watch it as much as, "TTAJ."

OK, I'll admit this part actually cracked me up because I was thinking the looks of ecstacy on their faces certainly did not seem to jive with where you could clearly see their hands and heads... I thought it was funny.

Patty and I watched this late last night because we both had insomnia. We hoped it would help lull us off to sleep, but we ended up laughing so much that it just kept us up longer. The movie was obviously very well-intentioned, but, wow, Lifetime movies are just bad. Melodrama, cheesy dialogue and PSAs. But no one died or went back to her husband or was miserable at the end, so woohoo! And it was nice to see good 'ole Brent Spiner.

Re: Lifetime Movie: An Unexpected Love

Postby runnerbird » Tue Mar 25, 2003 12:28 pm

Like someone said earlier, I think I've been spoiled by Tipping the Velvet too... but it wasn't ALL bad. I've seen worse *cough* claireofthemoon *cough*

The Good:

--Wendy Crewson working the pants-suit look... and yay... leather pants..

--The supporting cast at the real estate agency... Brent Spiner! (He was in Lee Rose's other film 'A Girl Thing' too...)

--"You don't look like a lesbian..."

"I have a plaid shirt I could slip into.."

--Mac's 'this is what I am. I can't flip it on and off like a light switch' speech.

--The teenager who played Sam was particular good.

--Did I mention the leather pants?

The Not-So Good:

--I do appreciate what this film was trying to accomplish by concentrating on how her family struggled with her new relationship with Mac, but I think I would have enjoyed the movie a whole lot more if the gave more emphasis to Mac and Kate actually, you know, FALLING in LOVE...

--Chemistry, did you see sparks...? 'Cause I didn't...

--Why do straight actress in a gay love scene generally kiss each other like they'd rather be kissing an electrical outlet? All I ask is for some passion behind the kiss... you know...

--I think I've one too many movies where the Mother of the person coming out is a irrational, raving bitch from hell... and one too many movies were we have a empathetic, understanding maid or servant... It's in the Water anyone... anyone?

For the most part, it wasn't daring or shocking, but it was 'middle of the road' enough to maybe shed some light on a topic that might not be so visable in certain parts of the country.

... and have I mentioned the leather pants?

Re: Lifetime Movie: An Unexpected Love

Postby VampNo12 » Tue Mar 25, 2003 6:32 pm

As other kittens have mentioned... for a Lifetime movie it had it's moments. I agree it was cliched, but at least the ending was a happy one.

Really Wendy Crewson was a big reason why I enjoyed the film as much as I did... my she was hot in her pants suit :drool . However, I did find the chemistry kinda lacking between Mac and Kate. I think the problem in this area was the film's main focus being (as Xita said) "family acceptance," rather than spending a great deal of time on the women actually falling in love. And I did enjoy Brent Spiner, as well as the other office woman, which gave me some laughs. I guess overall I enjoyed the movie for a one time viewing, but I wouldn't necessarily run to re-watch it.

By the way... in regards to the love scene (and the edits), personally I'm surprised Lifetime went as far as they did. Yes, what we saw was quite tame, but considering what I feared from reading the papers it went farther than I thought it would go (ie I envisioned them kissing, falling back on the bed, and then a fade out). So I wasn't as disappointed as I thought I be with the scene.
